micah94··on Warren Buffett Controls 3% of the Treasury Bill Market
Remember the T-Bills are the very very short-term side. A lot of things can affect the short term side. I mean when Powell opens his mouth he moves those interest rates. It's the only side of this quadrillion dollar market that they can control and manipulate. And they brag about it (the fed does) I think Buffett is a reluctant holder. I take him at his word on this. He's not some closeted "bond king" or anything... He sees the equities market as too expensive. He's been pretty consistent with that view.
micah94··on Tesla FSD head to head against Mercedes Driver Assist on the same road [video]
Surely this is sarcasm. You'd prefer a drunk person getting into a Tesla with FSD vs. an attentive and alert person driving (anything else)? I'm sorry but being drunk and getting behind the wheel, that's an automatic fail. I don't care what you're driving. You shouldn't be behind that wheel in a position of responsibility when you are under the influence. I include 'thinking the Tesla will just handle it' as under the influence.
micah94··on Becoming an Amateur Polyglot
This is a profound statement.
micah94··on Goldman Says It's Time to Take Tech Profits and Invest Elsewhere
These are the games bankers play. The answer is both.
micah94··on 'Vaccine lettuce' bill (food containing a vaccine is a drug) passes in Tennessee
I thought this little gem was going to be in the comments section of the article. Surely not in the article itself. Nope.
micah94··on Daniel Kahneman has died
I remember years ago Penn Jillette talking about his book "Thinking Fast and Slow". And I was like why is a magician talking about a book written by an economist?? Well, read it and you'll understand why it fits so well with their brand of magic. Dr. Kahneman expresses in words what's going on in your brain while watching someone like them perform.
micah94··on Researchers propose fourth traffic signal light for self-driving car future
Why don't we get more round-a-bouts in America first before we start talking about a fourth light.
micah94··on Americans to Get $5k to Shop Under New Bill
I'll concede I may have conflated the idea of money printing with reallocating existing funds. It's not clear where this money is going to come from. But I get suspicious whenever the govt just wants to hand out money. There are so many other programs handing out money. Why is this one going to be better?
micah94··on Americans to Get $5k to Shop Under New Bill
It only addresses the demand side and not the supply side.

Putting more money into system doesn't add any additional goods. You only get the benefit if you are among the first to get the money because you will be able to bid up the price putting the person without the extra money at a price disadvantage --or-- you get the product(s) first leaving others to go without.

The fear is in extreme cases, this can lead to inflation and/or empty shelves.

Maybe with something like donuts, the baker has plenty of dough and will hire more and create more to meet the demand. Or maybe you have no control over your raw materials (like the price of OIL or some complex refining process) and can't make any more gasoline no matter how much money your customers have.

micah94··on Step Away From CNBC. If you want to make money, change this channel
THIS. You have to see it ALL as nothing more than entertainment. They have to fill 24 hours of non-stop talk. They are going to talk about trading. Then say "No one can time the market". This is like a comedian with a step-up and punch line. You should do this and you should do that. But "Don't fight the Fed". It's one joke after another. And you should see it as such. It's fun to learn the lingo. But any real investments you have should not be determined by what these people say.
micah94··on Apple is turning developers against Vision Pro before it even arrives
I think the point is this new product is coming out that requires dev support, but they are at the same time pushing devs away with the new EU app store rules. So this is going to work against the Vision Pro being successful.
micah94··on Bitcoin price falls 15% following launch of ETFs
what about just because it looks nice? people like nice things.
micah94··on I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
Looks like Amazon has flagged whatever this link used to point to. Trying to decipher from the comments, but my HN-fu is failing me!
micah94··on Steve Ballmer is set to make $1B a year for doing nothing
Silly article. Lots of talk about big numbers. Keep in mind a billion doesn't necessarily buy you the same as it did when Microsoft started. So large part of these numbers is just due to inflation. Also taxes will take a huge chunk. And what would happen to MS stock if he actually started to dump a bunch of it? It would tank and he'd never realize all those gains.

Yes, I'm jealous.

micah94··on After self-hosting email for 23 years I have thrown in the towel (2022)
Man, these articles come out every once in a while. I'm in this camp. My own email server going on 25 years. I'm also responsible for the email of other businesses as well. And maybe that's the difference? I'm getting paid to understand the nuances in mail delivery? But it's a chore no doubt. I never plan on stopping. EMail is TOO IMPORTANT. I don't have any secret formula other than be reachable. Read your email to postmaster@domain, sign up for all the Postmaster Feedback loops. I have two major issues (which have lessened over time) 1) you have to slow-deliver mail to gmail/comcast/yahoo/hotmail or you will get deferred very quickly. 2) users getting their passwords hacked leading to spam delivery. But I catch that automatically these days with a script that checks the IP of the connection. Too many successful connections from Pakistan within a minute gets the account disabled. It's kept me off blacklists for years.
micah94··on 'Demonic forces' stopped official investigations into UFOs in the UK
They keep rehashing stuff. I've heard Mr. Pope say this many times over many years, but it's never been the subject of an ENTIRE news article. It seems to suggest that if we could just get our leaders to stop believing in this silly "God" thing and start believing they are little green men from Mars instead, we could finally make real progress!
micah94··on SSH protects the most sensitive networks. It just got a lot weaker
These files had to be named terrapin-mitigation.conf to work for me.
micah94··on Interviewing my mother, a mainframe COBOL programmer (2016)
I think you just wrote the prompt right there. Step 2. ???? Step 3. PROFIT!
micah94··on The Old Internet Is Dying, and Something Worse Is Being Born
I never thought about it like that... And to think, I learned this by...reading.
micah94··on Why Life Does Not Really Exist (2013)
I prefer to think of everything being alive rather than life not existing.
micah94··on Ask HN: How many of you still have a Facebook account?
I'm in this boat. Was finally forced to use it to get Facebook login working.
micah94··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
See Adam Neumann (WeWork) as an example of how to pull this off.
micah94··on Lemming Suicide Myth: Disney Film Faked Bogus Behavior
Also keep in mind many documentaries film in what are essentially zoos (large animal sanctuaries). Sometimes this is revealed in the show, but other times you have no idea. They get shots out in the serangheti but then cut back to a close-up of a cheetah inside a sanctuary.
micah94··on Volkswagen cuts jobs as demand for EVs plunges
Same. Buying a car is a significant purchase for me and I only do it when I'm able to get a deal and mainly buy used. 2020 was ridiculous. I basically named my price.
micah94··on Apocalypse Proof: 33 Thomas Street in New York City
cool silence?
micah94··on Ask HN: Why does Google rank the real Python documentation below content farms?
You can also raise/lower domains in kagi. So if you're a python developer, you can boost docs.python.org to personalize your results.
micah94··on Air Force funds ‘blended wing body’ design for long-range, fuel-efficient flight
Looking at the cost spent back then vs. what this startup is getting, it doesn't seem like the JetZero guys have even a remote shot at making this happen.
micah94··on What If All the Gasoline Cars Became Electric Vehicles?
Is there enough lithium in the ground to make enough batteries for all these cars?
micah94··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
Snowden only released data on projects that were no longer active. He did that deliberately. I personally believe it's the reason he's still alive. A bit inconvenienced but still above-ground.
micah94··on Could an industrial civilization have predated humans on Earth?
My issue has always been with the large megaton granite slabs inside the pyramids that you can't even see. They placed these things high up above chambers and rooms like lego pieces.
