mi3law··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2023)
AO Labs | https://www.aolabs.ai/ | Founding team | Berkeley, CA + remote

Coming up with objectives or deciding what is appropriate (i.e. what to backpropagate against) is a function of intelligence not accounted for in current AI design.

We've built this in code, a form of AGI at animal-levels using (naturally) an alternative to backpropagation. Get in touch ali at aolabs.ai.

A shot in the dark, open to anyone who's curious. We are working on awareness as code, filling a critical gap in AI today. Get in touch ali at aolabs.ai.

mi3law··on How Animals Perceive the World
You might enjoy Frans de Waal's excellent book, *Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are." https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780393353662 Quite a fun read, too.
mi3law··on Not everyone should meditate
>> I'm not sure exactly right now what this refers to as fifth state of consciousness, is it the eight circuit model of consciousness?

No, the fifth state here is an interpretation of the Gurdjieff system and the associated Fourth Way. Loosely the fifth state equivalent to enlightenment (satori). The specific quote is from a book by Robert de Ropp called "The Master Game."

I haven't looked into Leary's eight circuit model in years. Thank you for reminding me of it. By your description of your current state, sounds like you have found utility in that particular framework?

mi3law··on Not everyone should meditate
I'm sorry you've had such difficult experiences. Does the following excerpt resonate with you? If so, I'd be happy to share more.

"This comment is extremely important and should be borne in mind by all who feel tempted to dabble with the psychedelic experience without knowing what they are doing or why. He who enters the fifth state of consciousness without preparation may be spiritually paralyzed by his experience. He has seen too much too soon and, as a result, all games become meaningless. He cannot play the life games that satisfy men in the third state of consciousness. He cannot play the Master Game because he knows nothing about it and has no teacher. So he becomes, like Daumal's "leaf in the wind," an even more helpless plaything of external forces than he was before his rash experiment."

Properly read, Plato's allegory of the cave in the Republic is a response to the question you've articulated. Kant noted as much, and when not resolved with dualism (which flowed from Plato through Descartes to the modern day), this allegory offers powerful insights. I love these topics, have been swimming in them recently, so happy to talk more, just email me (info in profile).
mi3law··on Ludwig Wittgenstein: A Mind on Fire
Thank you for sharing this! You should post it to HN as its own post-- I work to classic music and this is a very interesting list that others would enjoy, too.
mi3law··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise, study finds
Thank you for sharing your experience and I'm sorry for your losses.

I'm taken away by your story and would like to connect, please. I have a similar experience and I'm working on a research project in AI that is related to this. Please drop me a note me aee at berkeley edu I couldn't find your contact info in your profile.

mi3law··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
To answer your specific comparison, I would say the values associated with capitalism.
mi3law··on Ask HN: How to get back hacker's mentality and joy of coding
You need to take a step back entirely from tech to ask yourself what is meaningful or at least inherently interesting about tech anyway.

We all live around technology, and you also work in it, too, so it seems absurd to try to get your love for it back by trying to do more tech, especially in the same way as before. It'll never taste the same, but you're also able to ask more, deeper questions now than at 12. Revel in that so it may rekindle your flame.

mi3law··on Ask HN: Has the COVID-19 crisis made you abandon a personal project or path?
Your story is inspiring, I wish you all the best! Keep at it and make the most of this period!
mi3law··on The Hybrid Hypothesis of Human Origins: Are We Hybrids? – Independent Research
I found this site randomly in a way that reminded me of the Old Internet, and indeed the site's design reflects that, too!

Thought-provoking research here. And I like supporting scientists who do their work outside of existing dissemination structures.

mi3law··on Artificial Intelligence Still Isn’t All That Smart
Thanks for sharing such interesting papers!

May I ask what makes you think that the first paper has Deepmind's definition of intelligence? Was it said so by Deepmind at some point?

mi3law··on Traveling to the Sun: Why Won’t Parker Solar Probe Melt?
There was a discussion on HN a while back RE NASA's software safety guidlines. Here is the link to the discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12014271

The PDF linked to in the discussion is no longer there, but I found it on standards.nasa.gov here: https://standards.nasa.gov/standard/nasa/nasa-gb-871913

There are also some interesting product management related guidelines from NASA, like this from 2014: https://snebulos.mit.edu/projects/reference/NASA-Generic/NPR...

mi3law··on What Did Ancient Romans Do Without Toilet Paper?
I thoroughly enjoyed your comment so I did some Googling around, and found this gem straight from the man himself:

|'I have, answered Gargantua, by a long and curious experience, found out a means to wipe my bum, the most lordly, the most excellent, and the most convenient that ever was seen… I say and maintain, that of all torcheculs, arsewisps, bumfodders, tail-napkins, bunghole cleansers, and wipe-breeches, there is none in the world comparable to the neck of a goose, that is well downed, if you hold her head betwixt your legs.' http://qi.com/infocloud/geese

Not just a small bird, but a whole goose neck! XD

mi3law··on It all made sense when we found out we were autistic
Hi [redacted]. Thank you for sharing your powerful story.

A loved one is going through a similar experience (though struggling with the schizophrenia spectrum). I would love to ask you a few questions but couldn't find any contact info in your profile here.

Is there a way that I can get in touch with you? (My email is in my profile; if you send me a short note so that I can have your email, I'll followup).

I particularly curious about the experiment they discussed at Fox Run, with taking you off all the drugs to reset you for a proper diagnosis. Did they try it? Did it work? Is this a standard diagnostic procedure?

Thank you.

mi3law··on Ask HN: Weirdest hack that you ever saw in production?
In a consumer app, I would say Snapchat's early camera hack on Android takes the cake.

To be brief, their app ran the Android native camera app in the background and took a screenshot of the resulting feed for the image, bypassing actual integration with Android's camera apps. Having worked on an Android smartphone from the ground up, I can understand their reluctance to commit dev time to having to support so many Android versions and other variations on all the devices out there, but still a lazy weird hack.

Hi Thomas. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sorry about your brother. I'm going through a similar situation with someone very dear to me, and I'm wondering what will happen to them. Would you have time for a quick chat or phone call? My email is in my profile; please email me if you see this.
mi3law··on NHTSA proposes rule that cars must talk to each other with 2-4 year plan
As an armchair observer of the driverless car trend, it seems that a regulation like this is what is needed to bring driverless car tech mainstream super fast, as fast as seatbelts perhaps.
mi3law··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2016)
Hammerhead | Bangalore, India | Hiring 4 developers & 2 QA engineers | FULL-TIME | ONSITE

Hi! I’m a product manager at Hammerhead. We are building a sports technology company. We shipped our first product (see it on our website) to over 50 countries, and are now building our next product: Hammerhead X. Still in stealth, it is a highly capable custom Android-powered device that will be released in the spring of 2017. * http://hammerhead.io/

We’re hiring 4 developers and 2 QA engineers at all levels (junior to senior, including a QA lead). We’re looking for full-stack engineers who have experience with mobile and Android in particular. More details here: http://bit.ly/hh-swjobs-hn

Special note on our office in Bangalore-- We are Techstars-backed NYC-based company, but we are NOT hiring in India to save money or outsource serious engineering; working with us is NOT at all like Infosys or any consulting shop. Hammerhead’s SVP of SW Engineering and Co-Founder is Indian and leads the team in Bangalore, which is made up of 6 full-time employees who have equity in the company and make real decisions that determine the future of our products.

We regularly fly our team between offices or meet in the middle for better collaboration; right now for example, the development team is Boulder, CO, on a 3 month sprint to set the foundation for our new product.

We’re building the most excellent startup engineering team Bangalore has ever seen, and we have a deep appreciation for the tech scene and the potential to grow our Indian-side of the company. Join us.

mi3law··on The War ISIS Wants
Thank you for mentioning this. I'm very disappointed that many in the HN crowd seem ignorant of these very relevant events (from the comments).
mi3law··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a cofounder?
Hey, I'm interested and have relevant tech and non-tech background in the space. My email is in my profile; couldn't find yours.
mi3law··on Silicon Valley Then and Now
Great comment.

Can you point to any more info about Caltech's honor system? I haven't heard of it before and you piqued my curiosity. (Couldn't find much on Google.)

mi3law··on Using YouTube analytics to predict YC interviews
Do you have analytics on if anyone checked your demo?

Not a lot of people would have the analytics in place, but it would be interesting to further correlate results with YC demo testing patterns to get a more complete picture of the admissions funnel.

mi3law··on Ask HN: What goes into a great startup blog? What do you like to read?
Thanks for the response! I really appreciate it.

Very interesting thoughts. Makes perfect sense-- if a startup's blog doesn't show the startup's growth, it would be like a baby who doesn't age-- boring.

Thank you!

mi3law··on How the Pentagon’s Skynet Would Automate War
Abstract of the policy paper the article heavily references:

This paper examines policy, legal, ethical, and strategy implications for national security of the accelerating science, technology, and engineering (ST&E) revolutions underway in five broad areas: biology, robotics, information, nanotechnology, and energy (BRINE), with a particular emphasis on how they are interacting. The paper considers the timeframe between now and 2030 but emphasizes policy and related choices that need to be made in the next few years to shape the future competitive space favorably, and focuses on those decisions that are within U.S. Department of Defense’s (DOD) purview. The pace and complexity of technological change mean that linear predictions of current needs cannot be the basis for effective guidance or management for the future. These are issues for policymakers and commanders, not just technical specialists.

mi3law··on Too Many Kids Quit Science Because They Don't Think They're Smart
Science these days is mostly done in institutions of higher learning, where 1) it is a pretty rigid process with slightly counter productive incentives (publish papers! Any papers!), and 2) it is available only to a select few who've made it through a rigid and ivory-tower-esque formula (i.e. the universities themselves).

I think that's a big problem, and one that makes the self esteem issue worse (if you don't fit the formula, you'll feel inferior).

I always wanted to be a scientist, but then gravitated towards entrepreneurship because it's less rigid and defined.
