mgnn··on Steam Controller
Xbox-type controllers have the left stick where the dpads are. PS-type controllers are symmetric.

I, too, agree that the symmetric layout is the correct one.

mgnn··on Coursera’s Preview Mode
When did Udacity fell off the MOOC discourse? That's my first experience with MOOCs; have fond memories learning robotics with Sebastian Thrun there. I used to prefer its short lesson and frequent quiz too.
mgnn··on Every American Is Bilingual
American is in the title, but really, it's saying every English-speaker is at least bilingual.

If you're already n-lingual with English as one of them, you can bump it to n+1 :)

mgnn··on Google's Reverse Acquihire of Windsurf and the Future of AI Developer Tools
Who came up with this term? There's no reverse in that definition. I'd expect a reverse acquihire to be something like windsurf getting Google people and absorbing google. Maybe something like Boeing and McDonnell Douglas.

It's actually just doing the hire but omitting the acqui. Maybe truncated acquihire if they had to have acquihire in the term.

mgnn··on Solving a “Layton Puzzle” with Prolog
What nostalgia!I haven't played any since one of the early 3DS ones. And there's an incoming one for the switch too!
mgnn··on Kawasaki Reveals Four-Legged Robot You Can Ride Like a Horse
The Chevaline! It's probably possible to build The Primer, and the John Zaibatsu doesn't seem very outlandish too.

But guys, that book wasn't a manual.

mgnn··on Want even tinier chips? Use a particle accelerator
This article from half a year ago has photos and diagrams https://spectrum.ieee.org/euv-fel
mgnn··on BYD says new fast-charging system could be as quick as filling up a tank
This is the first time I hear about "metric mega", and I hang out a lot here, where Americans use their units without explanation.
mgnn··on Microsoft is Getting Rusty [video]
Rust-sharp? That's tetanus.
mgnn··on Mistral's Le Chat tops 1M downloads in just 14 days
It's funny. Le Chat's gaslighting me in French. Claims Mistral develops ChatGPT when answering in French, but OpenAI when in English.

For your amusement too: https://imgur.com/EgmQ0Ph

mgnn··on What if Eye...?
Tangential, but the visuals reminded me of the book Vehicles by Braitenberg (https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/5b1c7c36-4582-4962-a89d-...). Although, it's less about evolution and more about complex behaviours from simple systems.
mgnn··on Veo 2: Our video generation model
Video without the id. You pick which definition of id.
mgnn··on Senior Intel CPU architects splinter to develop RISC-V processors
It's the cycle of life. Intel was founded by people leaving Fairchild, and that in turn was founded by the Traitorous Eight from Shockley.

The ecosystem is healing.

mgnn··on Show HN: A simple and powerful RSS reader for the web
Can you add Youtube channels to the feed?
mgnn··on Zero regrets: Firefox power user kept 7,500 tabs open for two years
> Currently, Firefox users can create different user profiles to segregate workflows and open tab sets, but more granular tab organization is on the way. Mozilla says it will roll out an improved profiles system and new tab management capabilities later in 2024.

Panorama was there. It was beautiful.

Simple Tab Groups works OK.

mgnn··on Lego ISS
In absence of a tower, how about this display solution: https://old.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/eo2ufs/my_attempt_at_...
mgnn··on Better protecting kids’ privacy on YouTube
> Oh, and no notifications when new kid-friendly content is posted, so if you want notifications 'Support me on Patreon'

How about RSS? Each channel has RSS, and iirc it has only failed once (as in, a few days with no updates even though there were new videos) in the last 4-5 years. I don't use Youtube's system for following channels anymore, I just have a YouTube 'subscriptions' category on my feedly.

mgnn··on Kill Sticky Headers (2013)
I use a more simplistic solution: I bind a keyboard shortcut to uBO's element zapper so I can just zap sticky headers as I find them. I have to zap for every repeat visit, but the same shortcut works for zapping sticky sidebar videos or other undesirable elements too.
mgnn··on Germany's Vanishing Monasteries
The Concent of Saunt Leibniz.

We can try turning old monasteries into concents à la Neal Stephenson's Anathem. People can go for a year in a unarian math to just study. Maybe a four consecutive years in such a math get equivalent recognition to a university degree. Whether it is the traditional monastic discipline or the Cartasian discipline, the required basic infrastructure is probably similar. Jeejahs stay outside, of course.

Particularly determined professors can populate a decennarian, maybe even a centenarian. Also, isn't there only about 9 years before our scheduled visit by the Icosahedron?

mgnn··on Pourquoi-Pas (1908)
There are a few more photos of the ship in the French page.
mgnn··on The Simple Genius of Checklists
That's strange, my edition doesn't have appendices. Thanks for the page though.
mgnn··on The Simple Genius of Checklists
I'm about 2/3 into the book, the idea is convincing, but did he put any example checklist in the book? He referred to many extant checklists, but there is no "Figure 1: a bad checklist" and "Figure 2: a good checklist, improvement for the one in Figure 1".
mgnn··on Browser tabs are probably the wrong metaphor
It was an extension until Quantum. Then there was a vacuum for some time. The closest I can find today is this one:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/simple-tab-gr...

mgnn··on Name one thing in this photo
His is an interesting take on vampire lore in sci-fi. I remember they also have drugs to mitigate this condition, and allow them to live in cities: the anti-euclidean, or auntie-e.
mgnn··on How to Procrastinate Productively
This was also explored in a short from Robot Film Festival 2018 [0], though the recursion wasn't so deep.

mgnn··on Google fined in India for search bias
If my reading is correct, the violations were only for a period in 2009-2010. Whatever change of behaviour this ruling might have induced, it had happened a long time ago.
mgnn··on Nvidia’s New Policy Limits GeForce Data Center Usage
The original Japanese posted elsewhere does not make the distinction; it's just NVIDIA. So, it's a translation thing?
mgnn··on Denying Dystopia: The Hope Police in Fact and Fiction
The writer is Peter Watts. He writes science fiction, with arguably dystopic aspects. One of his books, Blindsight, is available to read for free on his website: http://www.rifters.com/real/Blindsight.htm

In fact, it was HN that introduced me to this writer.

mgnn··on Search Bangs
I use that too. One of Bangs' advantage is it has suggestions, so I don't have to memorize all the keywords I've set. Of course, Bangs work with keyword search (e.g. du !amazon alice in wonderland), but you lose the suggestion.

In any case I mostly use keywords to search google, youtube, and wikipedia in several languages, so I don't see bangs having much utility for me.

mgnn··on The Future of Reproduction Is Mind-Boggling
We can also arrive at Brave New World style human production. Babies are produced in factories according to characteristics projected to be in demand by the time they have fully grown. Except instead of the alpha-beta-epsilon types in the book, we may be able to breed for maximum diversity for maximum potential resistance against diseases. Or, of course, any other objectives, technology permitting.

We may also arrive at a common trope in sci-fi where reproduction is not an individual (or couple) decision. By default, individuals do not reproduce and the factories keep the society populated.
