mgmeyers··on Ask HN: How to restore cognition after years of trauma? I feel slow and dumb
Yes. I'm still recovering (in year 5 of therapy) but notice a night and day difference in my capacity to focus and be present and alert.

> Talk therapy has done little.

I honestly don't think recovery from trauma can be achieved without psychotherapy. You can cover it up, but it's still going to impact your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to some degree. You might get lucky with things like psychedelics, but finding the right therapist and right therapy will bring about change more consistently.

The challenge, however, is that there are many styles of therapy and many styles of therapists. Also, there are different types of trauma (eg. shock trauma, complex trauma, attachment trauma) that require different approaches to treatment. I was lucky in that I found a therapy and therapist that worked for me in my first try. My partner, however, went through 7 therapists over the course of a few years before they found a good fit. Any decent therapist will not be offended if you tell them you feel therapy is not going anywhere, in fact it's in their code of ethics that they need to help you find a better fit.

What works for me isn't going to work for you, but here's my opinion (that you didn't ask for) on therapies that are better at treating trauma than CBT or "traditional" talk therapy: Internal Family Systems therapy, EMDR, the NeuroAffective Relational Model, and Somatic Experiencing / Sensorimotor. AEDP and Coherence Therapy are also decent options. If CBT is all that's available, at least try to find TF-CBT (trauma-focused).

mgmeyers··on Ask HN: What colorscheme are you using in your code editor?
Noctis: https://github.com/liviuschera/noctis

Specifically, I try to match the theme variant to my lighting conditions. I had some major eye strain for a while, and doing this with this theme seemed helped.

mgmeyers··on Emotional Blocks as Obstacles to Learning
Coherence therapy is a pretty concise approach: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17054323-unlocking-the-e...

Internal family systems is a more elaborate, but thorough approach: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6969927-self-therapy

mgmeyers··on Cultivate the Skill of Undivided Attention, or “Deep Work” (2019)
Self-Therapy by Jay Early was the first book I read that gave me lasting, "non-simple" solutions. Totally changed the way I view my own motivations, and shined a light on how absurd the "stop doing it"/"try harder" mentality is.
mgmeyers··on Ask HN: Low self confidence and self esteem. How to improve?
I've struggled with self confidence my entire life. In an effort to change and grow I've read all the major self help books, developed a serious meditation habit, and even turned to potent psychedelics.

The only thing that I found that actually works, however, is internal family systems therapy. Because of IFS (and my therapist) I now know what it's like to be genuinely confident, rather than fighting or pretending to be.

mgmeyers··on Ask HN: What Are Some Companies That Foster Employee Happiness and Wellbeing?
That does sound pretty great. After your studies in culture building, what sort of things do you look for in a company?

mgmeyers··on You can train your body into thinking it’s had medicine
I highly recommend Sarno's work as well. I had severe tendinitis in my wrists for about 4 years. I was only able to work about 3 hours a day and was getting pretty desperate, so I decided to give what I thought was Sarno's "crackpot theory" a try. 4 weeks later my tendinitis was completely gone.
mgmeyers··on Ask HN: Novelty addiction is ruining my life and career. What should I do?
I would recommend a 10 day vipassana meditation retreat (they're free). They're extremely difficult, but participating in one will jolt you out of your cycle of cravings.
mgmeyers··on Most violence in the world is motivated by moral sentiments
> violence is often the moral outgrowth of those who have grown so assured of their righteousness

I like that.

This idea is also present in Buddhism, though they take it a step further and say that all suffering (everything from external violence to internal dissatisfaction with life) is caused by some form of judgment. They say the same thing that you mentioned above: violence is caused by the judgment, "I am right, you are wrong".

mgmeyers··on Ask HN: Which Laptop models would you recommend for a developer using Linux?
I have a two year old Lenovo S431 running Linux Mint 17.1. For the most part it runs flawlessly. My only complaint is the wireless card. I can't connect to comcast wifi networks when xfinity wifi is turned on, and in general, the wifi range is horrible. I wanted a thinner, portable laptop, but from what I've read, a lot of the newer Lenovos that aren't part of the business line (like the T series) have wifi problems.
mgmeyers··on Is Pop Music Getting Less Intelligent?
I wouldn't think testing vocabulary would be a very good indicator of music's intelligence. In my mind, music has been getting less intelligent because the tools to make music these days have made the barrier to entry almost non-existent. No longer do you need to study and practice various musical/performance skills for years to be a musician and put out a record. All you need is a computer and some software.

It's hard to say if this is a bad thing, though. I think it's good that anyone can try their hand at making music, but at the same time, the saturation of poor-quality music seems to be having a negative effect on music quality overall.

Or, maybe I'm just getting old?

mgmeyers··on Is Pop Music Getting Less Intelligent?
I'd argue that this is more of a subjective terrible-ness. Technically, this song more skillfully crafted than a lot of pop music today. Even on a basic level, no auto-tune = you actually need to be able to sing (to some degree).
mgmeyers··on Classmill: Create online classes with links, images, videos and files

mgmeyers··on Ming Mecca, the jazz instrument for videogame improvisation

SEEKING WORK - Remote or Seattle, WA

I am a full-stack JavaScript developer with ~7 years of web development experience. I can do anything front-end, JavaScript, or Node.js related. Need a web application built using your hot, new, and obscure framework? I can do it. Need me to build you a robot that serves you coffee while you work? I can do that to (thanks johnny-five). Need me to learn an entirely different language? Sure, let's do it!

I am currently looking for short-term gigs (max 6 months), or part-time work. I'm open to working remotely (and have 5 years experience doing so), or working in Seattle, WA.

mgmeyers··on The Hacker Who Drank Ayahuasca
Like?
mgmeyers··on The Hacker Who Drank Ayahuasca
While I mostly agree, ayahuasca is particularly good at helping you (sometimes forcing you) to work through stress and trauma, and helping you fix things. It allows you to observe your memories (in vivid detail) as a third party and guides you through them. There are many accounts of rape survivors, veterans, and other PTSD sufferers finally being able to let go after taking ayahuasca.
mgmeyers··on McDouble is 'cheapest and most nutritious food in human history'
Am I missing something? How does something being calorically dense make it nutritious?
mgmeyers··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2014?
The Divided Mind: The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/130610.The_Divided_Mind?...

This book helped me get rid of the wrist tendinitis I had for four years prior, in four weeks. It also changed the way I view many of the chronic physical ailments many of us face.

The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1963638.The_Untethered_S...

A great book about consciousness and awareness that isn't too "froo froo"-y. It definitely has had a profound impact on my relationship to myself and my surroundings.

To Soften the Blow https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16209280-to-soften-the-b...

It's hard to define the impact this book had on me, but it was also profound. It's an autobiography of Lynnie Vessels who's father shot her mother with a shotgun across their dining room table. As depressing as that sounds, it's actually a very inspiring and strangely uplifting book.

mgmeyers··on LSD-assisted psychotherapy for anxiety with a life-threatening disease
Having a bad trip is definitely a possibility, but it's not something that's very predictable, as the entire experience is completely foreign. You can significantly reduce the chance of a bad trip by putting yourself in a comfortable and safe environment, however.

Also, I've found "bad" trips to be just as valuable psychologically as "good" ones, though they can seem life threatening in the moment.

mgmeyers··on Show HN: Shortdiary – A Diary for the 21st Century
How is this a diary for the 21st century? Why should I use it? How is it better than a text document? What does it look like?

These are all questions I ask myself before deciding to sign up for something like this.

mgmeyers··on Show HN: Beyondpad – New kind of note taking and data management solution
This looks awesome, well done!

What are your plans for the future? Is this just a hobby project, or is it something you plan on monetizing or open sourcing? The reason I ask is, I've seen a lot of projects like this fizzle out, which makes me weary of investing any time into using it.

That being said, I'm excited to see your future developments and refinements on this project!

mgmeyers··on Why I changed my mind about Node.js
Paypal developed the Node and Java code in parallel.

"Our first adopter of node.js in production wasn’t a minor application; it was our account overview page and one of the most trafficked apps on the website. We decided to go big, but we also mitigated that risk by building the equivalent Java application in parallel." -- https://www.paypal-engineering.com/2013/11/22/node-js-at-pay...

So, in this case Node wasn't being compared to a legacy system.

mgmeyers··on Ask HN: Is anyone interested in Node.js based alternative to Magento?
