mgiampapa··on Three chips in and Google Tensor is on life support
Apple also bought Intel's modem unit as either leverage or an escape hatch from Qualcomm. It's like having unlimited dollars to throw at a problem is useful.
mgiampapa··on Google confirms they will disable uBlock Origin in Chrome in 2024
Presumably, Mozilla or someone else, will provide a side-loadable version of Firefox for iOS with regular manifest v2 / v3 support. Android users already have this via the Play Store and it works great since Google doesn't ban other browser / rendering engines.
mgiampapa··on VMware is now part of Broadcom
vSAN pricing is all about what the sales guy is willing to do to make the rest of the sale. It has zero marginal cost if they can get you on the platform and using their ecosystem of tools and software.

In edge deployments where rack space is tight it's actually a great solution if you only have a few U to work with and have a HA requirement for a legacy app as well.

mgiampapa··on Google confirms they will disable uBlock Origin in Chrome in 2024
Thankfully we should all be able to sideload Firefox on IOs by then.
mgiampapa··on Zelle finally caves after years of refusing to refund scam victims
I don't know about you, but it's fairly easy to see if someone real is behind Facebook profile vs someone running a scam. When I buy or sell on marketplace it's local and if we don't have a friend in common or a friends of a friend, or an open profile that looks real there is little time wasted.

In contrast, in Craigslist-land I'm interacting with just a phone number or an email.

It's Log, it's log, it's better than bad, it's good. From Whammo! (Also brought to you be Zelle)
mgiampapa··on Nepal bans TikTok and says it disrupts social harmony
Is your point that it happened, there was widespread outrage, penalties and then changes made to prevent it from happening again?
mgiampapa··on Zelle finally caves after years of refusing to refund scam victims
Yet it is still miles better than the previous state of the art, craigslist.

That's exactly what Hawaii does. You can deduct $3000 from your taxes per exceptional tree. https://taxfoundation.org/blog/exceptional-tree-deduction/
mgiampapa··on iLeakage: Browser-Based Timerless Speculative Execution Attacks on Apple Devices
408 days and it still requires a user to enable via a debug menu? This is not a good security look from apple.
mgiampapa··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
That's if they even saw the person was under them. My aunt got dragged by my grandfather as a child for a block and he at one point ran over my grandmother in a parking lot when she fell behind the car... this may say more about my grandfather than anything else, but average encompasses all kinds of drivers.
mgiampapa··on The three modern formats for email forwarded by people
In the early days of my IT career I had an executive who had his secretary print all of his emails on paper and put them in an IN box on his desk... Never had an IT complaint from him either. FYI, this was in the mid 2000s, how the meteor missed him, I have no idea.
mgiampapa··on Meta Quest 3
They explicitly called out sporting events during the press release, so I would expect that concerts would be easy. They already have gear for court / ring side seats.

mgiampapa··on FTC judge rules Intuit broke law, must stop advertising TurboTax as “free”
Have you ever purchased health care via healthcare.gov? It's not bad at all in my experience. It certainly gets the job done with a minimum amount of pain.
mgiampapa··on FTC judge rules Intuit broke law, must stop advertising TurboTax as “free”
No one with a complicated tax situation should ever consider H&R Block, it's almost monkey and a dartboard level of skilled tax prep. TurboTax at least you can drive and as a semi-educated tax payer do it right. Everyone is looking forward to the IRS providing a baseline service except the tax industry.
mgiampapa··on US solar installations expected to be a record 32 GW in 2023
No one knows exactly where economy of scale will land us, but much like Moore's law the trend in the data is there. Of course any major change in these industries are going to have knock on effects. We have been automating the steel production process in 1st world countries for years simply due to the cost of human labor. I expect that trend will continue and those plant operators will effectively end up being paid to work on other things on non operation days.
mgiampapa··on US solar installations expected to be a record 32 GW in 2023
I think green hydrogen production is the obvious use case, but smelting, carbon capture and other things you would do with "free" power all make sense.
mgiampapa··on US solar installations expected to be a record 32 GW in 2023
At the rate that solar costs are falling we really don't. We just over-build and energy during the day is nearly zero cost. There is no problem with curtailing excess solar production, or opportunistically use that daytime power curve to run non time critical industrial processes.
mgiampapa··on Tidal energy is not renewable
Step 1, create the universe... Step 2, ????, Step 3, Profit?
mgiampapa··on Jimmy Buffett has died
Yet we still can't get our population reliably vaccinated for whooping cough, or a myriad of other diseases that children are most susceptible to.
mgiampapa··on AdNauseam: uBlock Origin fork silently clicking ads on behalf of users
This may not be the best title, it's the desired function of the add-on to generate noise and making tracking and targeting less useful. There is nothing hidden about what it is doing for the user.
mgiampapa··on What saved the ‘miracle house’ in Lahaina?
Here in Hawaii (the big island) the grid is so remarkably unreliable compared to the mainland that many folks are simply off grid. On top of that, electricity is so expensive that we are at the forefront of home solar + storage deployment because the ROI is so high.
mgiampapa··on Blue-light filtering spectacles probably make no difference to sleep quality
Where did you go to school? It's ROYGBIV you monster!
mgiampapa··on 32by32 – Macintosh History from the 1980s
It's apparently easier on not-Firefox as well. According to the readme for Chrome / Safari they used some CSS3 to disable font smoothing.
mgiampapa··on 32by32 – Macintosh History from the 1980s
We used fonts designed to work with the dot pitch of CRT displays that made it a little more bearable.
mgiampapa··on Successful room temperature ambient-pressure magnetic levitation of LK-99
I meant human legislation of AI, (and other immortal unaccountable entities like corporations to boot) not the legislation by AI.
mgiampapa··on Successful room temperature ambient-pressure magnetic levitation of LK-99
Interesting how the trajectory of the USA has changed since Citizen's United was decided. When and how are we going to fix the rationalization that immortal and unaccountable entities aren't people. AI legislation? I can dream of electric sheep.
mgiampapa··on Hackers manage to unlock Tesla software-locked features
2016 Didn't, I also enabled the built in navigation while I was at it.
mgiampapa··on Hackers manage to unlock Tesla software-locked features
I did the same on a Mazda CX5 a few years back, but it was a software only hack to get root first. I suspect the actual physical hardware modification line is the one that most users are going to be unwilling to cross unless they are in the "Download a Car" crowd.
