mgberlin··on Show HN: DataInStructures, interactive analysis of data structures
Very cool, I like the in-line buttons that animate. It really reinforces what the text is saying.
mgberlin··on Firedrop: A website builder that does everything for you
The logo is really, really close to that of Lightspeed, https://www.lightspeedhq.com/
mgberlin··on Ask HN: How to handle staging environments?
I would highly recommend using Elastic Beanstalk on AWS. I use the python platform most of the time, but PHP is available as well. If you're a new user, you can get a year on a t2.micro for free, and even if you have to pay that usually works out to about thirty-ish dollars a month which is probably tenable.
mgberlin··on Benefits of 1 Minute of All-Out Effort during Exercise
The headline is clickbait. It's a huge stretch to say that the volunteers engaged in 1 minute of hard exercise. The workout was:

"[they] warmed up for two minutes on stationary bicycles, then pedaled as hard as possible for 20 seconds; rode at a very slow pace for two minutes, sprinted all-out again for 20 seconds; recovered with slow riding for another two minutes; pedaled all-out for a final 20 seconds; then cooled down for three minutes."

Sure, the exertions total to one minute, but the recovery periods and cooldown are a very important aspect of the workout. Muscles are still burning glucose and oxygen, clearing lactic acid, and generally doing all the things that exercise is good for during this time.

mgberlin··on Hidden motors in cycling: Van den Dreissche banned for 6 years, titles stripped
I'm not familiar with that race specifically, but it's not unheard of for a young rider to have massive strength, but little technical skill. The ability to descent and maneuver technically only comes with years in the saddle.
mgberlin··on Hidden motors in cycling: Van den Dreissche banned for 6 years, titles stripped
Because six years for a 19 year old cyclist is essentially a lifetime ban. There is little to no chance of her returning to the sport after that kind of extended absence.
mgberlin··on Apply HN: Fix Research Paywalls and Donate Directly to Research Projects/Groups
And you will take some cut? How does this make money?
mgberlin··on What If the Future of Technology Is in Your Ear?
Maybe I'm missing something but I can't seem to find the product being advertised in this article for sale anywhere.
mgberlin··on Let's Kill All the Mosquitoes
Seems like it would be relatively easy to preserve large captive populations of existing mosquito species, then kill everything in the wild. If we notice some tragic consequence, ctrl+z.
mgberlin··on Ask HN: What is your desk / room / general working environment like?
https://gist.github.com/brln/9c682b572ce84ed24ce07403ffe4bb1...
mgberlin··on Ask HN: What software do you use for project and resource management?
I use RowStack.com, it's my project.
mgberlin··on Ask HN: What is your desk / room / general working environment like?
Desk: The Ikea one that came with the coworking space. Chair: Bigbox ergonomic, on best sale when I visited. Monitor: 23" that was my TV in my first Redwood City Apartment 5 years ago. Keyboard: Kinesis Advantage. I love this thing. Music: Always. Have a personal 'focus' playlist that's 118 hours of coding bliss, nothing but fat beats, no vocals. Hours: 8 to 5 every day of the week.
mgberlin··on Introducing Kindle Oasis
You're not the first person I've heard to complain about this, but is it really an issue? When it's on the lowest setting you're hard pressed to see the glow in even the darkest of rooms, and the battery life is still amazing.
mgberlin··on Apply HN- FixSmarter: Mobile App So You Don't Get Screwed by Your Contractor
How do you scale decision making with regard to whether or not a job was completed to spec? What about conflict resolution in the case of a disagreement?
mgberlin··on Asana
There's a lot of people in this thread who sound a bit disappointed in using Asana for Dev work. I understand that, as well as frustration with the huge-ness of JIRA. If you agree, I'd appreciate it if you checked out my current project http://rowstack.com, and let me know what you think. We did ShowHN a couple weeks ago, and have been aggressively building out the features people asked for.
mgberlin··on Your iPhone just got less secure. Blame the FBI
Without disclosure of the method used by the FBI, this sounds like nothing more than political posturing and a non-story. Apple is no longer able to fight the All Writs Act, and the FBI is no longer compelled to watch one of their favorite misuse-able laws get taken away.
mgberlin··on Ask HN: What would you use to build a super simple web app?
Plus one for flask. You can have a web app up and running locally in about 15 minutes, then deploy to Elastic Beanstalk in another 10.
mgberlin··on Show HN: RowStack – Streamline your team task management
We use Github so we definitely want to integrate with that. We've found, though, that building the perfect integration takes a lot of feedback from users. As soon as we start getting feedback (right now!) we'll start building.
mgberlin··on Show HN: RowStack – Streamline your team task management
Glad to hear it might be useful to you, that's our goal! I like the slideshow idea, we'll get that up soon.

Currently you can pull board in from Trello, and we plan to allow you to push data back out. I'm not familiar with Waffle.io, but I'll check it out today. We also currently have slack integration, where you can set triggers when rows change status, and create and read rows from Slack. We're planning to build any other integrations that our users will find useful.

You can follow us on twitter at https://twitter.com/rowstack_com

mgberlin··on Show HN: RowStack – Streamline your team task management
Looking into it now, thanks for letting us know.
mgberlin··on Show HN: Muse – Discover and listen music from the command line
A readme that explains your project would go a long way.
mgberlin··on Show HN: Tellybox – Simple, energy efficient kiosk display for your businesses
I can't really tell what this is, and when I click the tell me more, it only asks me to login. I _think_ it's just a raspberry pi, but maybe it includes some sort of display? Is it internet connected? Is there an app for it that I can update the display? If yes to these questions, I really like the idea.
mgberlin··on Ask HN: What are people's preferred project management tools?
I've spent the last couple months working on RowStack (http://rowstack.com). It's still in beta, but we're working hard on it, and looking for feedback. Let me know what you think (matt at rowstack.com)
mgberlin··on Show HN: Tellur – manage personal finances using custom-built tasks
The interface is very confusing. When I clicked on the first blank after 'When' I expected to be able to choose some noun but there weren't any.
mgberlin··on Show HN: “Attendize” – An open-source ticket selling alternative to Eventbrite
Looks interesting and nicely done from the screenshots, but there's massive friction to take a real look. There should be a link to a live demo, front and center.
mgberlin··on Show HN: Free alternative to intercom.io live messaging
The notifications don't play any sound or vibrate on my Nexus 6. Also, if I go to the notifications screen and hit save, it alerts that the changes are saved, but it doesn't close the screen, so I'm stuck there until I hit cancel. Little bugs, nbd.
mgberlin··on Show HN: Free alternative to intercom.io live messaging
This looks perfect for what we need, and the price is certainly right.
mgberlin··on See That Billboard? It May See You, Too
What do I need to do on my Android phone to make sure I can't be tracked in this way?
mgberlin··on An engineer replaced four monitors with Meta glasses
And yet that's somehow harder to find than a high resolution, ergonomic, HMD in the Bay Area.
mgberlin··on Show HN: HackerMoods – Trend analysis of HN sentiment
Ah, so you have to pay more attention to how the positive and negative scores are interacting, and sort of disregard the neutral score, even though it looks much larger. That's nonintuitive (for me). Unless the neutral score serves some other purpose, you might consider removing it from the visualization.
