mgberlin··on When Bitcoin miners take over a town (2018)
Reductio ad absurdum.
mgberlin··on When Bitcoin miners take over a town (2018)
That's a completely ridiculous answer and makes it clear you have no idea what you're talking about. 1) Gold has nothing to do with banking transactions, I've lived my whole life without ever touching a spec of gold. 2) Is about the energy consumption of bank branches. My bank doesn't even have branches. You're comparing apples to... tires or something.

But really, I'm interested in these arguments, please let me know where I can learn more. Especially regarding the idea that it uses less energy than the current banking system.

On the one hand, we have the biggest crisis to ever face humanity, where all of our lives literally hang in the balance and daily we're seeing the effects from wildfires to cold blasts.

On the other hand we have bitcoin.

mgberlin··on Over 80% of Covid-19 patients in a hospital study have Vitamin D deficiency
There is not enough UV-B in sunlight for your body to manufacture vitamin D when the sun is less than fifty degrees above the horizon. This means that for the majority of the northern half of the United States and all of Canada, you can't make _any_ vitamin D from the end of fall to the beginning of spring.

mgberlin··on California Dispatches Goats to Eat Brush, Prevent Wildfires
Except that goats don't eat grass, they eat brush. You'd want sheep for that.
mgberlin··on A transportation engineer has a simple solution to potholes: pave better roads
I live in Santa Cruz CA and and deal with terribly potholed roads. The air temperature here rarely gets below freezing, and I've never seen any ice on the roads to indicate that the ground temperature has been below freezing. Clearly something besides the freeze/thaw cycle is causing potholes.
mgberlin··on How we’re fixing “unlimited” vacation
Yeah I'd be interested to know how this would work with California law that requires employers to pay out unused vacation hours.
mgberlin··on Show HN: Go Freaking Do It – Smart contract for reaching your goals
If you really want it to motivate, the funds should be sent to some group you detest if you fail. I.e. the DNC for a staunch republican, or the NRA for someone who believes in gun control.

mgberlin··on My Time with Google's Cellular Service Was Mostly a Disaster
As a counterpoint to the article, I used Fi for two years and never had a single technical problem. The service was flawless and affordable. Then I realized Google now had real time location tracking and the ability to turn on my mic whenever they want, along with my email and search data, and that just felt like too much data for a single company to have.
mgberlin··on Blockchain startup R3 sues competitor Ripple
For anyone that hasn't been following them over the last year or so, they've made amazing inroads into the banking industry.
mgberlin··on Blockchain startup R3 sues competitor Ripple
They're the only altcoin out there with a real company doing real work to solve a real problem for other real companies.

mgberlin··on Firefox Focus – A new private browser for iOS and Android
I absolutely could not agree less. Every time Google shows me some sort of "magic" that I know involves their massive compendium of personal data, I'm reminded of how much I been detest that they've stolen that information from me. No matter how much I opt out, say no, and turn things off, they continue to extract wealth from my need for basic modern services. I can't tell you much much I appreciate Mozilla understanding that and releasing products that feel usable without being exploitive.

mgberlin··on Sperm Count Dropping in Western World
This mindset is extremely disturbing, that the only way to make a difference in the world is to reproduce. Really if you want to make the biggest impact on the most people, you won't bring any more consumers into the world.
mgberlin··on Sperm Count Dropping in Western World
The wikipedia article is extensive and well cited: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A
mgberlin··on Sperm Count Dropping in Western World
I've personally become concerned recently with the abundance of BPA and it's effect on the endocrine system of men. Between disposable water bottles, aluminum can liners, and food stored in plastic containers, there's a huge amount of exposure to this endocrine disruptor. The article doesn't mention it in particular, but I think it's worth being cautious over.

mgberlin··on Electric Cars Soon Will Cost Less Than Gas Cars, Research Suggests
Of all the words I would use to describe the current electric cars (and hybrids) on the market (except Tesla), "great looking" would not be one of them. I don't understand what they're thinking in designing the boxy, heinous, toy-ish electrics that are available now. I would rather walk then have to ride in a BMW i3 or Nissan Leaf.
