mgberlin··on The Addicts Next Door
Why do these opioid epidemic articles keep making the front page of HN? They seem extremely off topic to me.
mgberlin··on A crashed advertisement reveals logs of a facial recognition system
Only if your phone is locked and it is looking for all open wifi networks. If you unlock it or it is connected to a particular wifi network this is not true.
mgberlin··on Why Juicero’s Press Is So Expensive
Because when a restaurant buys vinegar, it comes in a gallon jug, if not a five gallon bucket. Hell, it might come in a 55 gallon drum. But then Blue Apron puts it in single 1 oz bottles and ships them all over the country, wasting a huge amount of packaging to supply commodity ingredients.
mgberlin··on Billionaire Mike Novogratz says 10% of his money is in Bitcoin and Ether
And compared to Ripple, it's still astoundingly clunky.
mgberlin··on Billionaire Mike Novogratz says 10% of his money is in Bitcoin and Ether
Ripple has written a compelling implementation. It can handle massive transaction volume, is building a network internationally with established banks, is slowly releasing more currency into the wild resulting in inflation, and is pre-mined to avoid having to do proof of work.
mgberlin··on Ask HN: Do other fields of engineering have an equivalent to whiteboarding?
Chemistry has whiteboarding, but instead of writing algorithms or code, you're expected to be able to draw structures, reactions, and synthesis. It's also similar in that this is not necessarily a core part of most chemists everyday job, but something you study for to be able to interview or give presentations regarding your research.
mgberlin··on Launch HN: Sudden Coffee (YC W17) – Instant coffee that doesn't suck
I buy instant coffee 3 or 4 times a year when I go backpacking. Because it's that rare, I'm not going to subscribe, but if I saw this for sale at [Big Box Outdoor Store] when I was buying supplies, I'd probably pay a premium for it.
mgberlin··on Romania dictionary altered to thwart exam cheats
With an astoundingly high false positive rate, assuming it's a multiple choice test.
mgberlin··on Romania dictionary altered to thwart exam cheats
Why would the owners of an online dictionary feel compelled to thwart cheating on tests? It's their job to provide accurate information, not justice to cheats.
mgberlin··on Show HN: App that makes time travel possible
The Times did this via email for World War I. It was kind of fun for a few weeks, but then I lost interest and it turned into spam. I'm also not much of a history buff, so maybe not exactly the target market.

mgberlin··on Should economists be more concerned about AI?
Unless catching the fish and baking the bread are zero sum games, in which the land owner is the winner, leaving the other two with nothing.
mgberlin··on Shimmers are the newest tool for stealing credit card info
What "tap" function is the author talking about?
mgberlin··on Spin wants to bring dock-less bike sharing to the US
This is all predicated on the fact that police and passersby care about a bike being stolen. My experience in San Francisco has shown this to not be true.
mgberlin··on Spin wants to bring dock-less bike sharing to the US
Your bikes are going to be stolen, stripped, and scrapped.
mgberlin··on Scientists Are Planning to Run for Office
As a former scientist who is very sad about the way politics are going right now, I was extremely excited to see this group forming. Then I saw that they've inexplicably co-mingled gun control and science. By all means we need to take every measure possible on climate change, energy production, and science education (the other issues listed on their site), but scientists are no better suited to have an opinion on gun control than any other citizen (except some of them might have a slightly better understanding of statistics, but those can lie in either direction).
mgberlin··on Ask HN: Are programmer salaries expected to drastically drop in the near future?
"I believe we're actually quite close to automating good software engineering in general."

What leads you to believe this is true? At the moment we don't even have good automation for telling us where a bug is in a stack trace, or a solid definition of "good software engineering."

mgberlin··on Wavelength, published by Asana
Please don't hijack my back button with your annoying "subscribe" modal.
mgberlin··on Ebikes: I Sing the Ride Electric
I truly hope to see many, many more of these on bike paths and roads in the near future. They bring the joy of bikes and motorcycles (two things I love dearly) to a whole new audience, are ecologically sound, and extremely efficient.

However, as an avid mountain biker I hope we can keep them as far from our local trail systems as possible. They're destructive to the trails, and allow people to end up on trails far ahead of their skill level. Running out of battery 3 miles from home on a city street where you hop on a bus is one thing, running out 3 miles down a steep hill away from civilization with the sun going down is how inexperienced people get killed.

Ebikes are mopeds by another name, have been around for decades, and have never been allowed on trails. Lets keep it that way.

mgberlin··on Ask HN: Would you pay for a service that gets you your first 100 users?
Absolutely. I'd also pay for a service that generates a business idea, has 100 paying users, and is willing to sell the idea and list.
mgberlin··on Amazon LightSail: Simple Virtual Private Servers on AWS
Their yearly conference, Re:Invent, is going on this week, so there will probably be more announcements to come.
mgberlin··on New MacBook Pro Is Not a Laptop for Developers Anymore
At first I was ornery about the touch bar thing. Then I remembered I'm using a Kinesis Advantage that has soft function keys, which I've touched about 3 times in the past year.
mgberlin··on New MacBook Pro Is Not a Laptop for Developers Anymore
Yeah, I'm totally baffled as to who productively uses VIM and reaches waaaay up there with their pinky. In the first 10 minutes of learning I was googling "mac remap caps lock escape", and I haven't touched the actual escape key in years.
mgberlin··on Is Facebook’s Massive Open Office Scaring Away Developers?
To make it seem like sunlight you have to simulate Rayleigh scattering. I remember seeing a company that was making artificial skylights that did this, but can't seem to find it anymore.
mgberlin··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2016)
Crank Logic | Santa Cruz, CA | Full-Time| On-Site | Full Stack Developer | https://cranklogic.com

We analyze local retailers point of sale data and give them insights, suggestions, and all the answers they need to improve their sales and margins.

We're searching for a passionate full-stack developer to join our small, focused team. We are looking for people who are high energy, care about local business success, and are comfortable working in a startup environment.

We're looking for someone with python and javascript experience, who can take ideas and suggestions and turn them into a finished feature. You'll be the first dev employee, joining two technical cofounders and four others. The interview process is a 20 minute phone screen, followed by a brief onsite where you work on a small (1 hour) project very similar to the work you'll be doing. If you're interested, please email me, matt(a)cranklogic.com.

mgberlin··on PostgreSQL 9.6 Released
Does anyone know when this will be available on AWS RDS?
mgberlin··on Show HN: The wearable that communicates entirely through your sense of touch
This is the kind of thing that I think could be really amazing, or a total dud. I'd definitely need to be able to try it out before I throw down over a hundred dollars.
mgberlin··on Switching Costs in Software Development
I'm not at all following the argument that being cognizant of switching cost should lead one to choose the underdog. Am I missing something?
mgberlin··on Ask HN: Why not offer flexible pricing for Saas
Nearly always? Why would you have a Slack account with one user?
mgberlin··on Ask HN: Where to live within California
I live in Santa Cruz and really like it here. Fantastic mountain biking, beach-going, and all around outdoors stuff. With the bay just over the hill, there's a pretty reasonable tech scene and some jobs. Housing is pretty out of control, though.
mgberlin··on Ask HN: Know a good tool to purge all posts/likes/photos from Facebook?
It's impossible. A few years ago I manually went through and "deleted" all content. It probably took me five or six hours all told. A year or so later someone was showing me something on their profile, and I noticed a picture that I thought was gone. Digging around, everything I marked for deletion had re-appeared publicly. I've since "deactivated" my account (there's no apparent way to actually delete it) and refuse to use the service, much to my family's chagrin.

tl;dr: Even if you delete things, they will eventually reappear.
