mfkp··on Stripe Payment Links
Which market are you in? In the US I'm seeing "Starts at 2.9% + 30¢ per successful charge"
mfkp··on Florida will fine social media companies that bar candidates
Comparing politicians banned for violating social media ToS to Rosa Parks is... insensitive at best.
mfkp··on Florida will fine social media companies that bar candidates
Edit: I guess it would be a battle of Corporate Lawyers vs. State Lawyers. Everyone ends up wasting money all around.
mfkp··on Florida will fine social media companies that bar candidates
The Florida Election Commission will impose fines of $250,000 per day on any social media company that de-platforms any candidate for statewide office, and $25,000 per day for de-platforming candidates for non-statewide offices.

“Social media platforms have morphed into the town square” - sounds like they want government-run social media instead of privately-operated social media.

Maybe Ron DeSantis should start his own social media platform instead of attempting to force private businesses to give up their freedoms.

Edit: this comment was originally posted in comments for this link: https://www.flgov.com/2021/05/24/governor-ron-desantis-signs... (got merged into the NYT article)

Edit 2: I guess this is HN's way of censoring political content. Mark hot/upcoming article as "dupe" of old article that has way less traction and does not even show up on the front page (or on any following pages as well).

mfkp··on What to do about GPU packages on PyPI?
$18mm/year for 5-15 software engineers? Seems just a bit excessive. (maybe you confused the monthly vs yearly rate)
mfkp··on Welcome to Libera Chat
Nickserv registration went to my spam folder on Protonmail, as a datapoint.

The layout is ... slightly broken on Edge browser on Android. (And zoom is disabled)

mfkp··on Archivists Are Trying to Make Sure a ‘Pirate Bay of Science’ Never Goes Down (2019)
I bought 4x 12tb Western Digital drives for $190 each back in October 2020.
mfkp··on A Lock Picking Game Changer [video]
Just make sure that it's not a felony to have them "in your back pocket" in your state or jurisdiction: http://lockwiki.com/index.php/Legal_issues
mfkp··on Calendso: An open source Calendly alternative
Also, what an odd calendar layout. Starting with the first day of the month at the top left means all the days are off for most months. Why would Thursday be at the very left side (as is the case in April)??

(I was initially trying to find out if the layout was Sunday or Monday starting, but apparently it's neither)

mfkp··on The latest DSM update makes btrfs drives unavailable on budget Synology models
Maybe I'll have to take another look at it when I have some free time, although I vaguely remember something not working right with the standard mdraid tools. According to this post, it seems to be a slightly customized version: https://serverfault.com/questions/568166/how-to-recover-an-m...

Thinking back on this situation made me remember the terrible thermals in that old NAS. I had to replace the (fanless) PSU 2 times because it was always blowing up and creating sparks/smoke. Lol good times.

mfkp··on The latest DSM update makes btrfs drives unavailable on budget Synology models
I switched from Synology to QNAP about 5 years ago (after my Synology NAS decided to stop reading disks using their proprietary RAID, and Synology support said "sorry, we don't know how to fix it". Lost 8tb of data that day).

Two lessons learned: 1) Don't use proprietary raid, 2) Don't ever use Synology devices.

QNAP has been great though, I've been very happy so far and zero issues.

mfkp··on Zoom zero-day discovery
You can also click "cancel" when the browser prompts you to open in zoom, then it will show a link to join from the browser.
mfkp··on Docker without Docker
This is a great demo, I definitely got a kick out of it and had some fun with a little javascript click loop ;-)

mfkp··on USB 3.0* Radio Frequency Interference on 2.4 GHz Devices (2012)
Synology actually has an option in their routers to "Downgrade USB 3.0 device to reduce interference of 2.4G signal" (so I assume downgrading the USB 3.0 port to USB 2.0 speeds would decrease the interference)
mfkp··on Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up
I think you're reading much too far into this situation. At no point did he say anything resembling "refusing to engage with coworkers of a different gender".
mfkp··on Epic corporate jargon alternatives
I associate it with "One-Time Password"
mfkp··on How much total throughput can your wi-fi router really provide?
I've found this site incredibly useful for router reviews lately (and much more trustworthy than all the SEO-optimized review websites): https://dongknows.com/

I keep getting a busy signal, you must be popular!
mfkp··on Launch HN: Routine (YC W21) – Tasks, notes and calendar all in one product
And on Linux/Android ;)

Edit: works pretty well as an app added inside of https://wavebox.io/

mfkp··on Kemal 1.0 – Fast, simple web framework for Crystal
Relevant with the Crystal 1.0 post earlier today / yesterday. Kemal is a great framework in the spirit of Sinatra, if you don't need all the fancy features of the big frameworks like Amber and Lucky.

I've used it and it's super easy to use, congrats on the 1.0! Oh, and happy birthday!

mfkp··on In January, there were more real-estate agents than homes for sale in the U.S.
I think parent comment meant you can view MLS listings for free (not understanding that the question was about having to pay to get listed on MLS). Redfin does charge lower listing fees than average though.
mfkp··on Crystal 1.0 – What to expect
The other main one is https://luckyframework.org/ (also going for more of a full-featured Rails type framework)

mfkp··on Vaccines should end the pandemic, despite the variants, say experts
That's the treatment that I got back in September in the US. I think they stopped using Remdesivir since then because it didn't correlate with any positive outcome. It also was destroying my liver, so they had to cut off the treatment halfway through.

mfkp··on I bought 300 emoji domain names from Kazakhstan and built an email service
I'd be more inclined to use it if he doubled up on the domains, for example also providing "clownemoji.kz" as well as (actual clown emoji).kz (so if I were to tell someone my email is "mfkp at clown emoji dot kz", they could either use the clown emoji, or spell it out.
mfkp··on Standard Ruby 1.0
So it's just Rubocop, but non-configurable (standard rules only). I don't mind any of the rules they've picked, other than the "no single quote strings", but I suppose that's the point - I don't get to have an opinion :-D

Good way to avoid developer preference arguments.
