methou··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
I hate those tragic links, some of them were sent from third party and infested with tracking links. Worse, it looks like from the site I'm logging in to, but the href is a tracker with redirection to the actual link. I see this frequently because my dns blocks those trackers.
methou··on Man trapped inside driverless Waymo car as it spins in circles
these conditions will be off not already covered in the TOS, and exempted the operator from being responsible for.
methou··on Curl removes experimental HTTP back end in Rust
yeah, rust is mainly for developers, and curl are for sysadmins and their derivatives.
methou··on Test
long time ago, whenever I faced a login wall, I would try asdfasdf/asdfasdf. 90% of all times it worked.
methou··on Show HN: Countless.dev – A website to compare every AI model: LLMs, TTSs, STTs
Thank you on behalf of my waifu!
methou··on 65% of Employees Bypass Cybersecurity Measures, New Study Finds
FreeIPA and Authentik works pretty well for me, I did some of this for my self with terraform for fun. Personally I don’t think it’s viable SMB who can’t hire a couple of sysadmins.

But the documentation for FreeIPA is especially good. Personally wouldn’t use samba as windows DC, but one legacy windows server license seems reasonable if you are having a few hundreds of employees.

In a previous job we’ve done Windows DC + Azure AD + FreeIPA + FreeRadius just fine, the entire setup is not super complicated, but still a headache. I think nowadays most of the thing can be terraformed so it could be easier and more scalable for growing SMBs.

methou··on Tell HN: Why Fastmail is the best email service
ProtonMail's encryption is PGP, and it's difficult to get PGP right. The whole signing party thing doesn't scale. If it can't be done right, then it's just a hype at best.
methou··on Tell HN: Why Fastmail is the best email service
I love their masked email. Normally other offerings like SimpleLogin (by Proton) or Addy.io are $3+/mo.

Fastmail's masked mail is an effortless addition to existing services, at no extra cost.

methou··on DeepL Voice: Real-time voice translations for global collaboration
I can't say for en <-> de, I can read both without problem. But for Japanese DeepL is much better, often times the tone from gpt4 are little bit "rude"/direct or "weird" in en to jp, deepl is as good as an example sentence they would put into a textbook. For jp to en, most gpt4 or any llm is much superior, because you can ask follow up questions on certain slangs, or anything that's not very clear.
methou··on DeepL Voice: Real-time voice translations for global collaboration
Page is plagued with "Contact Sales". So that's not for individuals who are seeking replacement for Google Translate / Live Transcribe.

When I saw the title I was kinda expecting a voice-to-voice translator with voice synth (interpreter), which is something I'm painstakingly building as a side project. I can just drop my project and use a more mature one.

methou··on Using Cloudflare on your website could be blocking RSS users
Some clients are more like a bot/service, imagine google reader that fetches and caches content for you. The client I’m currently using is miniflux, it also works in this way.

I understand that there are some more interactive rss readers, but from personal experience it’s more like “hey I’m a good bot, let me in”

methou··on A terrible way to jump into colocating your own stuff
IPMI/BMC is a must if plan to keep the server running longer than a release cycle of your Linux distribution.

Also remember ask your provider to assign you a private vlan and vpn to it for your own access only.

methou··on ADHD headband treats symptoms in 20 minutes per day
> The device delivers light electrical stimulation to the prefrontal cortex

Literally means tDCS or tACS, there are too many funded researches on this actually, like way too many:

I remember when I was in the field, it was one of the hotter topics in the neurosciences quite some time ago (~2010).

methou··on RWKV.cpp is now being deployed with the latest Windows 11 system
“Silently overnight, it’s everywhere, in every Windows 10 and 11 PC.”

So they are willing to deploy AI BS to an “old” system (win10), rather than the amd performance fix users desperately need.

methou··on Japan wants its hardworking citizens to try a 4-day workweek
Although in practice Japan currently has 5 days workweek, but in law it’s 6 days (Saturdays included).
methou··on Lilygo T-Deck Plus is a $70 handheld with GPS, LoRa, and a BlackBerry keyboard
It'd be more exciting if GPS supports RTK, but still I would buy this in a heartbeat.
methou··on Epic Games Store and Fortnite Arrive on EU iPhones
Meanwhile Japan also has similar laws passed recently, but apple did not bend
methou··on Intel N100 Radxa X4 First Thoughts
Can't wait to have a Compute Module(CM) that's compatible with pi-cluster etc.
methou··on The Cheap 10GbE Switch Buyers Guide
Last month there was a good supply of used Mellanox SN2010s, a 16x25G+4x100G x86 white box switch/router capable of being a firewall at price of ~1000$. But it's all gone now.
methou··on Police warn of thieves using WiFi-jamming tech to disarm cameras, alarms
I thought PoE in surveillance cameras are common, I though wrong.
methou··on Building and scaling Notion's data lake
> Data lake > Data warehouse

These aren't something I would like to hear if I'm still using Notion. It's very bold to publish something like this on their own website.

methou··on Authelia and Lldap: Authentication, SSO, User Management for Home Networks
I've been using freeipa[1] in the past, it wasn't specifically easy to setup, but is well designed, documented, and supported. Plus, it's able to manage certificates. But to use more "modern" techs, like OpenID, Keycloak will be needed.

methou··on Bill proposes for all Chinese high schoolers to receive military training
So they finally started to legalize what’s in practice since the 90s. These were norms for middle schools, high schools, and universities years after what happened in the Tiananmen Square.
methou··on Take a look at Traefik, even if you don't use containers
The only problem I'm having with it is that it doesn't support unix domain socket[0], in a "cloud native" environment you rarely need it but if you are using single node this can be sweet.

methou··on The data model behind Notion's flexibility (2021)
Notion’s data model is so good and the UI is great. I have read their privacy/data collection terms and it’s borderline acceptable. But it leaves a bad taste on my tongue whey I learned that they never wanted to implements e2ee with some bs explanation.
methou··on Cockpit mishap seen as likely cause of plunge on Latam Boeing 787
I have subscribed to Japantimes, only to find out it uses a 3rd party integration - piano.io, I can’t access the content I’ve paid for without enabling 3rd party tracking. Worse the JWT token has my name and email address in it (base64).

Then realized that paying makes me more targeted. I can just buy a newspaper at any kiosk without a subscription and it doesn’t have cookies in it.

methou··on Google asks me daily for my location to improve connectivity even if I say no
There should be a law to enforce giving and accepting 'no' as an answer. I'm seeing "not now" everywhere nowadays, and it started to make my blool boil.

I can and I am already using all sorts of blockers at different level that even if I said yes at some point the data isn't going anywhere, but enough is enough, it shouldn't be an arms race to protect very basic privacy or simply having dignity in front of my computer or cellphone.

methou··on Japan to introduce 'blue ticket' fine system for cyclists
The starting point at 5000 Yen is a lot of money for people earning Japanese salary. Violations like running red lights are common in most of the busy places.

The only problem is that you don't see cops that often, or they aren't very keen to enforce some subset of the traffic rules, so most probably you'll not get caught 99/100. Same as some other road rules. Don't get me wrong, if you get caught, it can be pretty serious.

methou··on Ask HN: Does procrastination advice help you?
For me first time I noticed problems with energy and performance I went to a doctor and they had me tested for sleep apnea, first day after putting myself on a CPAP was day and night difference.

Last year I found myself spend a lot of time hoarding tasks to do at work, but less to work on them. It’s causing constant anxiety, and the anxiety is driving me to take more tasks, making promises that’s gonna be missed. Once I felt it’s such vicious circle I went to a doctor and after many visits and tests, they finally decided that I have ADHD and prescribed me some non-stimulant meds, it took about 12 weeks for the side effects to wear off and finally start working.

Looking back I feel like ADHD might be occupational hazard for some. Or just a result of bad habits? I personally was switching context very often, like 15 minutes on a project in python, then switched to another one on Go. Also I’m the yes man at work. Now I just slot half a day fixated on only one project, and use the “focus time” feature on my calendar (blocks chat etc).
