US Tech companies have created $20 Trillion in stock market value on top of plenty of OS stack. They will do fine with commodity intelligence.

In fact, there are no other organizations in this world that is well suited to leverage scaled intelligence than Silicon Valley and great American companies

meta_ai_x··on I want everything local – Building my offline AI workspace
This is especially true since AI is a large multiplicative factor to your productivity.

If Cloud LLMs have 10 IQ points > local LLM, within a month, you'll notice you'll be struggling behind the dude who just used Cloud LLM.

LocalLlama is for hobbies or your job depends on running locallama.

This is not one-time upfront setup cost vs payoff later tradeoff. It is a tradeoff you are making every query which compounds pretty quickly.

Edit : I expect nothing better than downvotes from this crowd. How HN has fallen on AI will be a case study for the ages

meta_ai_x··on How Remote Work Died: A Girardian Tragedy in Corporate America
If Remote Work is incredible and extremely productive, you can literally arbitrage away and create remote-first companies and crush your competition who insist on WFO. According to the logic of WFH backers, it should be incredibly easy to attract the highest talent and that talent should be working at peak productivity and should have no trouble in beating competition.

The fact that none of the companies can do it, means WFH is a massive productivity failure. The reasons are aplenty

- Self-Reporting Employees or Researchers simply can't measure productivity that matters.

- WFH research is typically done and funded by WFH-friendly entities skewing it's benefits. There are no neutral social science research.

- Startups, which are a better unbiased WFO/WFH study (because all startups have the same starting conditions allowing us to control more variables), clearly show that teams (both technical and sales) sitting in room can crush/outrun Startups that are remote-only.

- Productivity measures done by these studies are almost always individual, but team productivity and firm productivity are emergent properties and hard to measure

meta_ai_x··on Maru OS – Use your phone as your PC
For Operating Systems and Ecosystems, Popularity == Quality. The more popular a software is, the more edge cases it encounters and solves issues. More people will write software, plugins, tools for it.

how so? Many internet companies that went bust like Webvan and Pets.com have successful equivalents in Instacart and Chewy?

I'm pretty sure many internet companies would be given a longer rope to survive now. E.g OpenAI and Anthropic will probably take years to get profitable but investors are OK with it

meta_ai_x··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
There are always shitty 20% operators in every industry. They won't make money and get weeded out.

Delusional to apply this to top operators (and at the same breath complain about Rich getting Richer)

meta_ai_x··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
lol is a coping mechanism for the poor. If you really think top VCs / investors haven't learnt the long-term importance of staying the course, then you know nothing about the industry and mostly being influenced by popular social media posts shitting on the investor class.

There is a reason Anthropic/OpenAI and many startups are given much much longer ropes to be profitable than in the 2000 era when VCs pulled the rug the first opportunity of trouble

meta_ai_x··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
The dot-com was a bubble because investors pulled money and belief at the first sign of trouble.

The landscape has changed dramatically now. Investors and VCs have learnt if we stick with winners and growth companies, the payoffs are massive.

We also have more automatic, retail and foreign money flowing into the market. Buy the dip is a phenomenon that didn't exist at the scale it is now.

Pre-2015 if Big Money pulled out, the market was guaranteed to fail, but now retailers sometimes have longer views and belief (on people like Musk, Altman) than institutions and they continue to prop it.

So, it's foolish to apply 2000 parallels to now. Yes, history repeats, but doesn't with the exact time or price points

That's true with every Tech company employees. They all want $1 M TC and work 10 hours / week
meta_ai_x··on The Fed says this is a cube of $1M. They're off by half a million
No. We have a double accounting system. For every $1 it creates, it has to create an equivalent liability.

And when something is budgeted for $1 Million, it is $1m nothing more nothing less

meta_ai_x··on The economics behind "Basic Economy" – A masterclass in price discrimination
Having to pay for your bags and meals are actually good for consumers and overall environment.

If passengers are forced to pack lightly because they have to pay extra fees is actually a win-win-win for everyone. Plus it is less discriminatory because my airfare is not subsidizing someone else abuse of the system.

Same goes with food. I want the option to not pay for the shitty airline food.

Yes, especially in cutting edge research areas where other high functioning people with high energy isarelso there.

You can write your in-house CRUD app in your basement or your office and it doesn't matter.

The vast majority of HN crowd and general social/mainstream media don't make the difference between these two scenarios

meta_ai_x··on Postgres IDE in VS Code
Automatic Schema Visualization always miss the biggest point.

When you generate visualization, you should only show key table and key fields within the table and hide all the helper, secondary fields and tables.

In an LLM world this should be easy for LLMs to pick out key tables and fields and only display those

Gemini has 1 Million context window, which usually works better for coding.

When it gets priced, it's usually cheaper (for the same capability)

meta_ai_x··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
Windows has many useful software that is not available on Linux.

So, for me Windows + WSL is more productive than just using Linux. The UI is still better on Windows(basic utilities like File Explorer and Config Management is better on Windows). No Remoting Software beats RDP. When I remote to a Windows workstation through RDP, I can't tell the difference. VNC is always janky. Of course there is Word/Excel/Illustrator which is simply not available on Linux

meta_ai_x··on A Research Preview of Codex
A junior engineer can always become a senior engineer by using Gemini/ChatGPT to build full systems and literally asking chatGPT, a series of Why questions to every output.

In fact not being bottle necked by senior engineers or not having to drawe the luck of a bad senior engineer/mentor, there will be a new stars of Junior engineers.

What you should be worried is Senior Engineers who hate AI

meta_ai_x··on OpenAI's Stargate project struggling to get off the ground, due to tariffs
100%. If you combine the massive AI-hate with irrational DJT hate you'll get articles exactly like this. Unfortunately, many of self-proclaimed intelligent beings fall for this.

(FWIW, I oppose a lot of DJT initiatives/behavior, but I hope it is rational criticisms)

meta_ai_x··on OpenAI's Stargate project struggling to get off the ground, due to tariffs
"Didn't vote" implicitly give their vote by saying that they don't care if any of them win.

Effectively they are giving 1/2 votes to each of their candidates, resulting in no change in the final result.

But, if you really want to be analytic, the higher the turnout of disaffected voters, the more likely they vote for Trump.

That's why, since 2016 or so, Trump always overperforms in general elections, while Democrats overperform in special/mid-term elections where the turnout is low.

So, these liberal/democrats copium about turnouts and non-votes no longer hold true. pre-2016 "Get out to Vote" were implicit Democrat crying calls to rally votes for the Democratic party. You still see people who haven't understood the underlying shift using this as a "dog whistle" to campaign for democrats while appearing neutral

meta_ai_x··on Google has most of my email because it has all of yours (2014)
Absolutely! We need those people and I'm thankful they exist. I'm only opposed to their smug, high-horse attitude that they are somehow better than others because they de-googled and make that as their identity.

Oh, BTW, when I ran my affiliate marketed website a few years ago, my highest conversion rate came from people who came from DuckDuckGo. These people are actually advertisers dream and fits a profile and target market like a T for certain products.

meta_ai_x··on Google has most of my email because it has all of yours (2014)
Imagine having to live your life with this irrational paranoia that your email is so important that you make irrational decisions of making your email less secure(by trying to host it yourself), more hassle (setting personal email servers).

To what end? Unless you are in the top 20,000 or so people who are actively being snopped on, it's just a waste of life to spend so much time to de-google, de-openai, de-meta, de-microsoft your life.

But of course this is a highly unpopular opinion on HN, but I have yet to see a single instance of a person whose life dramatically changed because they hosted their own email server instead of just using gmail. (unless you sell those services to other paranoid people and make money)
