merlinscholz··on M2 MacBook Pro Thermal Concerns
The thing is, Apple caters to the average user, not too much to specific needs. One example of burst-loads would be compiling code. Also, does watching 4K video lead to thermal throttling these days with hardware accelerated decoding?

merlinscholz··on I want to give Oracle money but I can't
If you are in Germany, they do accept the prepaid VIMpay, which basically is just an app for your phone.
merlinscholz··on Linux Hardware Database
Why would you test all Ubuntu desktop environments separate? Shouldn’t the hardware support be the same?

Shouldn’t the hardware support be the same in a given kernel version?

merlinscholz··on Ubiquiti is suing Brian Krebs for his reporting on their breach
I’ve swapped out all of my ubiquiti gear for Mikrotik. Granted, it is not as turn-key and fancy, but it gets the job done a lot better and especially cheaper.
merlinscholz··on Ask HN: Why isn't there a Google competitor emerging?
Exactly, they use their own index, which AFAIK can be seeded by other search engine results. Here's an overview: https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409406835469-Wh...

merlinscholz··on DigitalOcean acquires CSS-tricks
I’m sad to see Chris step down from CSS Tricks, loved his designs, content moderation and writing style.

I don’t know if I trust DO as his „successor“, I’ve lost way too much money on their platform for me to consider them trustworthy. And that’s coming from a person who now uses Oracle Cloud.

merlinscholz··on Help Censored Users – Run a Tor Bridge
Child pornography users in most cases use the internet too. A lot of them have cars and drive on the road. We should boycott public infrastructure altogether since it can be used for bad actions.
merlinscholz··on Less secure apps and your Google Account
Password managers are just another liability. One more thing you could lose the password to. What if the service shuts down entirely?
merlinscholz··on Open Web Advocacy
I get your point, but in my experience it is more common to land on a website with a malicious ad than intentionally download an untrusted app.
merlinscholz··on iCloud+ custom email domains should be better
What are they supposed to do when their own government has a warrant? Ignore it and let the government shut down the whole site? This way they followed it without breaking anyones encryption, no back door, … this is a positive aspect in my view.
merlinscholz··on iCloud+ custom email domains should be better
Or ProtonMail, which is outside of the Five Eyes!
merlinscholz··on Recovering from a Broken MikroTik Configuration
In theory you could connect via Ethernet directly to the Hue Bridge and turn the lights off that way, but at that point you can as well fix the other issues.

My main argument for Philips Hue instead of alternatives was that they can be controlled even if AWS or some other networks are down.

merlinscholz··on Recovering from a Broken MikroTik Configuration
You can turn them off at the socket, the newer ones via Bluetooth, and with the bridge itself. The bridge didn’t work because it is on a separate IOT vlan (and routing between wifi and this vlan didn’t work), and I was too lazy to turn them off one by one.

The nice thing about hue is that they work without an internet connection, which is not a given these days.

merlinscholz··on I'm so sorry everyone. Or: why I'm switching to Cloudflare
I'm not sure if I understand your use-case, but if you want forward emails from a whole domain to your (private) address there is https://improvmx.com/
merlinscholz··on I'm so sorry everyone. Or: why I'm switching to Cloudflare
It is true, I've been using them for one and a half years now and only one time I got an email that my instance had a few minutes of downtime due to an HW failure.
merlinscholz··on I'm so sorry everyone. Or: why I'm switching to Cloudflare
There already are tons of options for free VMs. I have 4 Oracle Cloud instances with 4 cores, 24gb RAM and 200gb disks total for this exact same use case. I suppose the author prematurely assumed all VPSs are costly or does not want to set up the networking themself.
