mepian··on Ask HN: What programming language should I learn?
>I previously gave Clojure a try, that was a pretty good fit, but the JVM / ecosystem put me off.

I recommend trying Common Lisp then. It's one of the primary inspirations for Clojure, and it's not tied to JVM - it's an ANSI standard with multiple independent implementations, my favorite is this one: https://www.sbcl.org/

>how a file manager make sense as the centerpiece for building a business

Well, there are Total Commander and other commercial file managers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_managers

mepian··on [dead]
For what it's worth, the late Dmitry Zapolsky hinted in his book Putinburg that Pavel Durov worked with the FSB from the beginning of his entrepreneurial career in Russia.
mepian··on Intel Layoffs: Is Future U.S. Chip Independence in Trouble
The economics of making EUV tools versus running them 24/7 at high throughput are very different.
mepian··on Intel Layoffs: Is Future U.S. Chip Independence in Trouble
You can argue that they are actually selling the CUDA libraries, and the GPUs are just a very expensive "dongle" to enable them.
mepian··on Intel Layoffs: Is Future U.S. Chip Independence in Trouble
What’s interesting is that AMD used to have a fab… then it was spun off… then it gave up on keeping up with TSMC's latest nodes. Possibly for the same reasons Intel is struggling right now.
mepian··on Intel Layoffs: Is Future U.S. Chip Independence in Trouble
Apple's shareholders would riot if the company started building its own semiconductor fabs.
mepian··on Intel Layoffs: Is Future U.S. Chip Independence in Trouble
Can the US government nationalize Intel in the worst-case scenario?
mepian··on Ask HN: Could early 80s computers have had better software given today's CS?
Honestly I'm more impressed by the early 80s software from the likes of Symbolics and Xerox than by modern mass-market stuff.
mepian··on SurrealEngine: Open-source reimplementation of Unreal Engine with playable UT99
Epic could open-source the original engine, like its former primary competitor id Software did with the old idTech engines.
mepian··on Unhygienic and referentially opaque macros with Scheme syntax-rules [pdf] (2013)
Maybe it didn’t fit HN's title character limit?
mepian··on Microsoft begins cracking down on people dodging Windows 11 system requirements
Apparently Fortnite has two different anti-cheats, and one of them works on Linux.
mepian··on Microsoft begins cracking down on people dodging Windows 11 system requirements
Strange, my PlayStation 5 controller just works on openSUSE Tumbleweed.
mepian··on Why did Borland ignore the Macintosh market?
In the early 2010s I stumbled upon a defunct Macintosh LC II or III in some office at my Russian technical university and was very surprised by that. I guess it was being used for CAD in the 90s, since the office belonged to someone from the mechanical engineering department.
mepian··on OpenVMS x86 E9.2-3 fixes CDE (DECWindows) and adds a Guest Console
They ignored my application.
mepian··on Intel sells stake in chip designer Arm Holdings
I thought we were in the context of the competition between x86 and Arm but sure, what is a non-last century ISA then? RISC-V, a very conservative rehash of an architecture from the 1980s? Realistically there are no other commercially viable contenders, sadly.
mepian··on Intel sells stake in chip designer Arm Holdings
Arm was also designed last century.
mepian··on Intel sells stake in chip designer Arm Holdings
First, how does selling stock prevent them from doing that? Second, switching to Arm doesn't automatically give them a competitive microarchitecture for smartphones.
mepian··on Microsoft is killing the Windows Paint 3D app after 8 years
Is it possible to reinstall it without Microsoft Store?
mepian··on Common Lisp Community Survey 2024 Results
I think behnamoh confused HN with Reddit, which was actually rewritten from Common Lisp to some other language (and the original Common Lisp version is still available in the source code form).
mepian··on Signal messenger blocked in Russia, says Roskomnadzor
If I remember correctly, the earliest popular thing that they permanently blocked was LinkedIn for some reason.
mepian··on Cosmic: A New Desktop Environment
KDE and Gnome are nowhere near the same thing, they have very different philosophies, guidelines, and underlying UI frameworks.
mepian··on Microsoft is a black hole of money and talent
The title is not very fitting.
mepian··on Why is 'Left Stick to Sprint' so unpleasant in games?
At least Nintendo's D-Pad patent expired. All other console manufacturers had to come up with workarounds for a long time, and sometimes they were bad (e.g. the Xbox 360 solid circle D-Pad).
mepian··on Why is 'Left Stick to Sprint' so unpleasant in games?
Persona 3 Reload maps the journal to the stick click, and I keep pressing it at worst moments while maneuvering to ambush an enemy, getting ambushed myself instead.
mepian··on #F – A Minimalistic Scheme System
I guess it follows the tradition where an ancient Lisp dialect was called NIL (which is how the false value was denoted back then): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NIL_(programming_language)
mepian··on The Untold Story of How US Spies Sabotaged Soviet Technology
It’s settled that it wasn’t a "carbon copy" by the spacecraft’s first actual flight. The US Space Shuttle had no such uncrewed flight capability.

mepian··on Jacek Karpińśki, the computer genius the communists couldn't stand (2017)
The tired cliche of comparing the subject to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs (celebrities from the later microcomputer era, one of which is not even a hardware guy) made me cringe, why not compare him instead to Ken Olsen and Wesley Clark, the men who actually built first minicomputers in the West, or to someone like Andy Bechtolsheim? I guess the target audience of the article doesn't know anyone but Gates and Jobs.
