mentat··on Oculus: Hand Tracking Updates
Latency even over a few feet can matter.
mentat··on In-person DEF CON 28 cancelled
Physical based attacks were the majority of the risk, and that was, practically, pretty minimal. If you want to watch from inside a VM, great, but mass attacks against watchers? I'm not seeing it. (Been going since DEFCON 9)
mentat··on Google allows G Suite administrators to monitor and audit user emails
Depends on the state. I believe there are several in which the answer is "yes".

Also, depends on to what extent that room can be considered public. (IANAL TINLA)

mentat··on Locked-down lawyers warned Alexa is hearing confidential calls
And that's not the standard but rather in general use.
mentat··on New York Governor announces 100% workforce reduction for non-essential services
Except the virus is doubling over those days so completely ineffective.
mentat··on NASA to launch 247 petabytes of data into AWS, but forgot about egress costs
By the way, depending on where it's hosted, S3 can seed torrents automatically: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/S3TorrentRet...
mentat··on “Just walk out” technology by Amazon
That would be very unlikely and easily reversed based on video data.
mentat··on Tokyo Olympics “looking at a cancellation” if coronavirus not contained
Thank you, I appreciate your perspective (and I think you're right)
mentat··on Cloudflare silently deleted my DNS records
Part of "Wear the Customer's Shoes" at Twilio (when I was there) was that each quarter every developer and product manager was expected to spend a full day doing front line support for free(-ish) tier customers and however long it took to fully resolve the tickets they got during that time. Really let you understand the type of problems people had, how to have empathy, and basically how to make a better product.
mentat··on How Big Technical Changes Happen at Slack
HipChat also had some pretty substantial outages.
mentat··on Tesla's self driving algorithm's overlay [video]
There are some odd things that happen with sharp turns and this latency in the current version. It will cross centerline because it's chasing a frame that doesn't contain the steps in the turn to not cross.
mentat··on Being a Noob
I think his assertion is that Newton did feel like a noob. I tend to think pg's right. He's done novel enough things that he has an informed view. My experience with novel though less significant investigation and problem solving shows the same.
mentat··on Announcing Updated Postman Plans and Pricing
It's called getting context and generally a good idea.
mentat··on Bluetooth will support hearing aids, sharing, and a better audio codec
iPhone uses a non-standard setup, probably with special hardware support for using magnetic for actual audio. There was a Defcon talk about the magnetic part, will see if I can find it.
mentat··on Open Hardware on Its Own Doesn’t Solve the Trust Problem
That's when you could do layout by hand. I thought you meant a modern CPU which is what that UI runs on. Good luck using Facebook on a 6502 which really brings up the rest of the subsystems that collaborate with the CPU.

The DDG based encoding for the format: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=qr+%22WIFI%3AT%3AWPA%3BS%3A%3CSSID...

mentat··on Open Hardware on Its Own Doesn’t Solve the Trust Problem
Facebook's user interface is at least a few orders of magnitude less complex than a CPU. What would lead you to think otherwise?
mentat··on Thoughts On a Year of Exercise
More like "the exercising should continue until you're actually exercising". Going through some motions that don't stress the body isn't exercise...
mentat··on Tesseract.js: Pure JavaScript OCR for 100 Languages
I had some good luck with https://github.com/sergiomsilva/alpr-unconstrained/blob/mast... as long as the images were high enough resolution. You might want to check it out, comes with trained models.
mentat··on Hedge funds listened to Bank of England briefings a few seconds earlier
It's a public press conference, you can't eavesdrop on it.
mentat··on Fast
How do you think things get too the cities?
mentat··on Make CPython segfault in 5 lines of code
I read it as related to the "limit Python to 1 million lines so it can be stable."
mentat··on Reject Google Nest or Amazon Ring Corp Surveillance and a Dystopic Future
I was pretty unconcerned until I saw https://www.insecam.org/ which really disturbed me. The dystopia might just arise from cheap cameras, fast networks, and no commercial interest in security.
mentat··on Facebook Tells Barr It Won’t Open Up Encrypted Messages
Thank you, I hadn't realized this. Is there a good source to read up on the evolution of the, at least perception, of a right to privacy?
mentat··on Facebook Tells Barr It Won’t Open Up Encrypted Messages
> if we ever did it would be quite obvious and detectable that we had done it.

It's running in your device, you don't have to trust them if you have technical skill.

mentat··on Facebook Tells Barr It Won’t Open Up Encrypted Messages
They're saying observing you in secret without a served warrant is wrong. (Not saying I agree either way.)
mentat··on John Carmack: I’m going to work on artificial general intelligence
He invented modern graphics as a practical problem by himself as the sole researcher. Given the tools at the time that may have been a harder problem.
mentat··on W3C Distributed Tracing Working Group
Timestamps across distributed systems don't work well as correlation tools as time tends not to be accurate enough to order application retries particularly but also fan out type requests. You really want parent / child or follows from relationships to collect and represent the graph correctly.

mentat··on L.A. temporarily suspends Uber’s permit to rent out electric scooters and bikes
Feels like the buried lede is that all the other companies already sold out all the private information of their riders.
