mendelk··on Who Y Combinator Companies Want
Actually, it seems your first understanding was actually correct: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10698634
mendelk··on A new look for repositories
For those that don't understand the reference:

> On 19 August 2009, why's accounts on Twitter and GitHub and his personally maintained websites went offline. Shortly before he disappeared, why the lucky stiff tweeted, "programming is rather thankless. u see your works become replaced by superior ones in a year. unable to run at all in a few more."

I heard it too, and also found it interesting. For the curious, its Planet Money[0], Episode #655: Pay Patients, Save Money

mendelk··on “This story is being previewed exclusively on Apple News until Tuesday”
I have a silly question:

If the conspiracy theorists are right, the whole ad-blocking on ios is a ploy to get the ad-starved publishers, and thus the masses, off the web-based internet and onto in-app content silos such as Apple News.

If they're wildly successful, the only ones left on the traditional internet would be those not producing content for money.

Does that mean I'll be able to experience the internet the way the old-timers reminisce? Before Eternal September[0]?

I've always felt bad I missed thosed times, and while this would certainly be a regression for the society at large, I think that would be something I'd like to experience :)

mendelk··on Reddit shell
Re lowercase reddit, I actually submitted with lowercase, but it auto-corrected to Reddit :)
mendelk··on PayPal does not know how to detect fraud
At one point, I discovered a feature (forgot the name) that isn't accessible in the web UI (at least that I was able to find at the time) and needed to be requested via email, namely, auto-withdrawal of PayPal funds to my bank account once a night.

Personally, I sleep better knowing my funds are in my bank, and you can, too! :)

> LinkedIn provides some of the most detailed targeting options of any ad-platform I’ve ever seen (though I’d say that Facebook has now eclipsed it)

mendelk··on F21 Thread Screen
Re the self-correction, perhaps it's this:

> Each ribbon also features a reflective strip which is scanned by an infrared sensor, which tells the machine the color each spool is currently showing, allowing for corrections for any slip that may occur.

mendelk··on Stephen King: “Everything You Need to Know About Writing Successfully”

    > 8. Ask yourself frequently, "Am I having fun?"
    > The answer needn't always be yes. But if it's always no, it's time for a new project or a new career.
Reminds me of this quote from Steve Jobs's commencement address[0]:

> When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

mendelk··on “Just remove the duck” (2013)
This reminds me of some contracting work I did for a company that billed the Federal government. I was told that the final invoices sent to them had some obvious and intentional accounting errors such that these would be "caught", thus satisfying whomever was in charge of approving the invoices on the government's end.
mendelk··on Introducing React Native [video]
According to the video, they were using ReactJS internally for four years internally before open-sourcing it, so it might be possible :)
mendelk··on Front End Developer – Interview Questions
If you're into one-liners, CoffeeScript is your friend :)

  foo = (n) -> (-> i) for i in [0..n]
mendelk··on Spider Programming Language
I believe your example is a perfect demonstration of how coffeescript can cause unintended bugs.

You code compiles to:

  (function(req, res) {
    return getUserIds(req.query).then(function(ids) {
      return Promise.all(ids.map(function(id) {
        return getUser(id).then(function(user) {
          return user.friends.count;
        });
      }));
    }).then(function(response) {
      return res.send(200, response);
    })["catch"](function(error) {
      return res.send(500, error);
    });
  });
Not what intended, I assume :)

After spending a few minutes checking out the site, I thought I'd bookmark it for later, only to realize I'd already bookmarked it in the past. I don't remember ever seeing the site before.

Sigh. I clearly need to spend less time on HN proper, and more on the sites it promotes :).
