mempko··on The AI trade now runs on borrowed money, and the lenders are repricing it
The state has created the debt based money we have now. It's always the state. Both are true.
mempko··on The AI trade now runs on borrowed money, and the lenders are repricing it
When you mentioned silver coins and bitcoin that helped me understand your position. All modern money is debt.

Bitcoin is NOT a form of money. Silver coins do require a debt, which is taxes people owe which they can use the silver coins to pay.

Graeber wrote about money in great detail in Debt the First 5000 years.

mempko··on AI financial advice is surprisingly good, especially if you ask right questions
It is good, but the harness matters a lot. The harness is what allows an LLM interact with the real world. For finance it's important you get answers using the latest data and that are calculated and not hallucinated. Also important the LLM thinks at a high level.

I've worked hard to have thetix.ai be the best at investing research compared to Claude or ChstGPT.

As a side note. All money is borrowed. That's how money gets created! Short explainer video by the great late David Graeber

mempko··on All major LLMs are lib-left. Even Grok, half the time
It's because most people are lib-left. The Financial Times had a great article about comparing social media vs AI. https://archive.ph/Q61eT

It's no surprise that the models would reflect most people's feelings. However what FT showed was that models are shifting the center of gravity towards the right. Their chart showed people are on a bi-modal distribution where most are on the left and some are on the very right, less in the middle.

Then they compared AI and showed how it moved the center of mass towards the center which is moving it towards the right (since most of the center of mass is on the left).

In other words, models are providing answers to the right of where most people would be.

Hey, can you try again? There was certificate issue that should be fixed now. Thanks!

corporate mindset.
mempko··on A Love Letter to Object Orientation
Thanks, I'll check it out! When I implemented messaging for Abject, I used the Erlang model. I also added P2P support so objects can talk across the network.

There is this great discussion between Joe Armstrong and Alan Kay if you haven't see it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhOHn9TClXY

EDIT: Just checked your smalltalk implementation. Very cool! Do you remember the Open Croquet project in the early 2000s? Way ahead of it's time. I wonder if a modern version of that could work today now that we have good VR headsets.

mempko··on Decker, a platform that builds on the legacy of Hypercard and classic macOS
Wait, you are telling me people vibe created apps before LLMs? /s

This is beautiful. I loved Hypercard when I was a kid. If they added networking to it, it would have been superior to web browsers!

Please people, have some joy and stop taking people down a peg for vibe coding apps. Let people have fun again for once.

mempko··on A Love Letter to Object Orientation
Thanks, that's some great research, I updated the post!

As you pointed out, how objects handled message passing is isomorphic with Simula's discrete events. However the real story about messages is late-binding, which is the core idea.

mempko··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
I wrote to Alan Kay over 8 years ago about my fears of global warming and how tech seems to dismiss it as a concern on the whole.

A little known fact about Alan Kay is 17 years ago he was part of a group of "systems people" who published for the NFS about various systems including the climate. He helped write "Transitions and Tipping Points in Complex Environmental Systems" (https://nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/2022-12/Transitions-and-ti...). He wrote to me that "This, along with many other warnings from many other sources over many years, fell on deaf or disbelieving ears."

He agreed with my concern saying "And, yes, you are right that things will likely be really bad if the climate is allowed to crash past the tipping point."

But what he said following that shook me to my core. Kay said "If you think of a system as an upside-down coca cola bottle, it is easy to see that a little nudge can topple it, whereas considerably more energy is then required to put it back.".

What this means is to get CO2 back down to 350 ppm (we are at 428 ppm), we would need to expend more energy than we did getting it to 450 ppm. That means, we would have to expend more energy than humans have produced IN ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY in the next 10-20 years (30,000-45,000 EJ range) just to put the system back to where it's safe.

Ask yourself, where are we spending our energy right now as a species? On putting the system to a safe level or something else?

Do we even have the capability to do it? As we continue to expand our industrial capacity, we also use non-renewable resources like oil and metals we can't recycle. As we exploit them, we degrade our industrial capacity for the future. For a deeper analysis read Limits to Growth and work related to it.

mempko··on Is surveillance risk chilling your online speech?
We live in the USA. I had a friend tell me they won't use Chinese models because models like K3 only have moonshot as the provider which is in China. They were afraid of surveillance. My rebuttal was that the Chinese can't send police to our door based on the conversation you have with their models while US companies can.

I'd rather the Chinese have my data over a US company because... what could they do? I live here, not China.

mempko··on Incremental – A library for incremental computations
I have built something similar like this for my fund 7 years ago. We were doing parametric optimization on large computational graphs. I have never programmed Ocaml but my understanding is introspection is kind of a weak spot for the language. Curious language choice! I know Ocaml is fast, about 1-2x speed of C, on par with Java.
mempko··on Kimi Work
I can second this. I was using Fable for some research and fable said it wasn't going to do it and downgraded to opus. Switched to K3 and continued my work. And it worked really well for what I was doing. You can easily switch claude code to use K3, it took like 30 seconds.

mempko··on Former NOAA employees built Climate.us to preserve climate data and resources
The point of a democracy is the people regulate it. It seems we are so far from a democracy and people feel so little agency, that we forget this.

Yes, this should be done by the government. Yes the people MUST make sure the government is doing what they want.

The problem with putting work like this in private hands is they are not as accountable to the people as a government SHOULD be.

mempko··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
The guy's vision is a world where children don't get the medicine they need and fascism rules (he gave a nazi salute, unironically). DOGE has killed people. Has killed children.
mempko··on Former NOAA employees built Climate.us to preserve climate data and resources
Quick question, what is your mental model of the climate?
mempko··on A graph that should be front-page news
You are an engineer or programmer? Why are you working in this industry if you can't take the time to learn about how this system works. We are supposed to be systems thinkers with a scientific mindset. How can you make a statement like "Nobody has that kind of temperature data" without researching first?

I'm embarrassed for my industry. I'm shocked how many climate denialists there are among engineers and programmers.

mempko··on Nokia’s years of mobile-phone supremacy ended in an afternoon
I think it would have been because it was a technically impressive OS with a beautiful UI created by at-the-time biggest smartphone maker in the world. iOS was first but that doesn't show it would win. Android now has marketshare and Android wasn't as good as MeeGo when it came out.

I believe if Nokia continued to invest, MeeGo would have even gotten better and they would have survived (note I worked at Nokia's subsidiary HERE maps at the time and saw early version of MeeGo. Also the hardware of the N9 was beautiful. It would have been a hit and in fact outsold the Lumia in the few countries it was delivered before they axed it).

mempko··on Nokia’s years of mobile-phone supremacy ended in an afternoon
I was working for a Nokia subsidiary called HERE maps at the time this was happening. All I can say is MeeGo was a great OS and would have competed really well with iOS. They released one phone with it called the N9 in some smaller countries and then discontinued that year in favor of Windows.

The heart of MeeGo continues on in Sailfish OS created by Jolla. They are again releasing a phone in Europe. I wish they released it in the US.

mempko··on A graph that should be front-page news
Question to you, if they looked further back, do you think the variability would increase or decrease. Do you also believe the mean temperature would be lower or higher? Just want to understand your mental model of the climate.
mempko··on A graph that should be front-page news
Backend changes? The world should have a revolution as our leaders have completely failed us.

mempko··on China sentences official to death for taking $325M in bribes
Someone like Trump probably couldn't even be a CCP party member. I've heard it's a relatively meritocratic organization, at least compared to pur political system. Though maybe someone from China can correct me.
