melissalobos··on Cancer Moonshot initiative restarted by NIH
I think that is how the GP's comment was meant to be taken.
melissalobos··on Cancer Moonshot initiative restarted by NIH
> whenever I get over 185 lbs.

I feel like this should have a height or bmi attached to be more general.

Overall people get very weird or think you have an eating disorder if you fast for any length of time. Luckily that is changing, but is still an issue for my partner who is in a much more traditional field and often skips meals.

melissalobos··on Trio of Rust Core Team members hit the road
> Sounds very drama free for them (the singular them.. not the plural... sigh).

I don't quite understand this line, would you prefer they identify as multiple people? Or is the objection to using the singular them in general? There is a large historic precedent for using a singular them for people you for whom you are unfamiliar with their gender. Not even trying to be "woke" but if there was someone named Terry(about equal likelihood of being male or female), it makes a lot of sense to use "them"/"they" instead of "he" or "she".

Edit: did you mean that for the other members it wasn't drama free?

melissalobos··on A short introduction to the undeciphered Aegean writing systems
One issue is that we don't have a lot of text, not even a megabyte of it(represented as unicode characters). So you could get a language model, but how could you judge its output? Maybe it would be really good at generating more similar text, but that text isn't probably super representative of things we would want to be able to read.
melissalobos··on Compiler Design in C
Very outdated, but has a good descriptions of how to implement tools like lex and yacc.

melissalobos··on Set up a website with Nim (2019)
Thanks for writing this! Is there anything major people should look out for with the newer language version or any advice you would offer to something looking into writing a webpage in Nim today?

I am working on a small side project in Nim and saw your post and thought it was very well done.

melissalobos··on Can medieval sleeping habits fix America’s insomnia?
It looks like baseline dementia risk is about ~8%[1], so a 4% percent increase in the absolute risk of getting dementia which I would consider to be pretty severe.

melissalobos··on Rust has a small standard library (and that's ok)
> it has accumulated code that look like mistakes in hindsight.

I don't think there is any language that people use that doesn't have this issue. C++ for example has a huge number of warts. Ideally like with std::auto_ptr they are deprecated and removed over time.

melissalobos··on Rust has a small standard library (and that's ok)
Using the example of JSON, one of the issues in the Java ecosystem is that there are 3-5 JSON libraries(GJSON, Jackson, Org.json, Genson, etc.) that are commonly used. Today there is a clear choice for Rust, but in 5 years it will probably be more fractured.

If you have one or more dependencies that also need to parse JSON, and they choose differently, you could have cargo building multiple JSON libraries and including parts of them in your application, which would increase the bloat of the resulting binary.

This is of course a problem with any language and not Rust specific, but in an ideal world there would be one best way for doing most things included in the standard library and everyone would just use those.

melissalobos··on Rust has a small standard library (and that's ok)
The author's main argument that it is okay for the standard library to be small is that you can pick an optimal(for you) implementation of functionality, and you can check licenses of code easily with cargo, library authors prefer to have autonomy, and you can lock in dependencies to a specific version.

I feel like the main advantage of a large standard library is already vetted reasonable default code. When using python I don't need to read through a billion blog posts and forums to find a good json library. There is a decent one already in the standard library and it basically works. If I need a better one, then I would want to go searching. I think having a sensible default out of the box helps more than it hurts. For the compile times, why would cargo make you pay for what you don't use?

melissalobos··on Show HN: Web page that parses and explains the label on a bike tire
Thanks for sharing, this looks really useful. I have started biking again recently and the labels on the tire are super confusing. Do you have any plans to extend this(attempt OCR or something)?

I tried looking at the source a bit and it seems like your markup is pretty clean, if a bit unreadable after minification. I liked the classes "question" and "answer". It looks like you are planning on using affiliate links to monetize it?

melissalobos··on Professor Fortran's Encyclopedia
That looks really interesting. Is there a translation anywhere?

> here's a comic book tells what komputerom and what they eat, and I finally realized that in a fairy tale, called the computer, I get in this life is not destined.

I couldn't quite understand this line. Do they mean that they understood after reading this that they could program computers? Like it was their first exposure to programming, or is there some other meaning?

melissalobos··on Instagram Bans Healthy Eating Ads for Promoting 'Negative Self-Perception'
> They note a link between ADHD and obesity. And they suggest that getting ADHD treatment through Cerebral could help people to "stop overeating."

I hadn't heard of this connection before between ADHD and obesity. But there have been some studies on it[1].

melissalobos··on Recreating the Shortest Math Paper with Rust and WASM
Judging from that thread, they were posting it more for advice and comments on how to write Rust code better. It looks like a fun learning project!

>The Scheme for setting up of Display Fabs in India shall extend fiscal support of up to 50% of project cost on pari-passu basis to the approved applicants ...

>The Scheme for setting up of Compound Semiconductors / Silicon Photonics / Sensors (including MEMS) Fabs and Semiconductor ATMP / OSA...

These were taken from the boxes at the bottom. Does this read as repetitive in Indian English as in American English? I had never seen the phrase "pari-passu" before either. It seems like this project is just starting, and is going to be looking into how it could grow a domestic manufacturing chain for semiconductors.

melissalobos··on Si78c: Memory-accurate reimplementation of Space Invaders in C
That must have taken a lot of dedication, looking through the code, they had to manually specify nearly every byte of the memory. I wonder how different this is from just writing an emulator for the original architecture.
melissalobos··on Recreating the Shortest Math Paper with Rust and WASM
The actual content in the repository is just a few for loops to find the counterexample. With a ton of commented out code, and some default code generated by cargo I am guessing. I am not sure how ready the author was for people to view this.

melissalobos··on An update on rust/coreutils
I have seen it argued many times that the GNU codebases are deliberately written to be unintelligible to avoid claims of being derived from UNIX sources. If they were written in the most straightforward ways, then they would have to show that no-one working on it has seen the original sources. I believe there is even a section in the glibc manual discussing this idea.
melissalobos··on Rust extension traits, greppability and IDEs
I feel like this is a pretty reasonable article, and it makes a good point. Much like Lisp most Rust codebases that I have seen are written usually by smaller teams of people. The issue the Author brings up is one that would be a problem if you had a very large team. Does anyone have any experience working on a large Rust project where there was extensive use of Traits?
melissalobos··on 50 Years of Prolog and Beyond
One of the most transformative parts of Prolog is the DCG(Definite Clause Grammars), you can specify a parser as regular Prolog code out of the box. Combine that with strings just being lists of chars, and it becomes super easy to write parsers, which simplifies a lot of issues.
melissalobos··on Masterclass on mathematical thinking
Try not to take this as me being mean, but I can't help but feel that for profit math education grands very hard against the basic concepts of math and math education("No royal road to math" and all that). I understand that someone of Tao's stature in the popular math community is likely very enticing to masterclass. However Tao himself benefited tremendously from being noticed at a young age and having his skills nurtured. It feels a bit wrong for any one in his position to be aiding a for profit institution, especially when the content is not free. I understand that they approached him, and I and everyone haven't to produce a free good quality version of this. But it does still FEEL wrong. I of course say this as a very privileged elite educated person.

EDIT: in the comments Prithvi has some interesting suggestions for doing a patreon at a higher level to be released freely. If possible and that eventually exists support that,

melissalobos··on Lock-Free Locks Revisited
The best thing about C++ is the namespaces. This will never be an issue in the code itself, and judging from how google responds to my queries, they use a form of ELMO so the context should differentiate it.
melissalobos··on Playwright: Automate Chromium, WebKit and Firefox
I don't really have a horse in this race, but based on the thread, why would this be wrong. Are any of these automation frameworks really different? What would be the differences? When would I use one versus the others? Especially why would I use puppeteer if it is a dead project as implied?
melissalobos··on Xcode Through the Years
> But I can’t help but wonder if it’s time for Apple to provide its developers with a pure Swift IDE

You mean an IDE only for Swift or only written in Swift? That last few projects I worked on that involved Swift all had some Obj-C or C++ components, so no matter what I would really like support for other languages in an IDE they offer.

melissalobos··on Ask HN: Share your experience of pay raise
Sorry, not to distract from your point, but I haven't ever seen this abbreviation and my search engine isn't pulling up much. What is FAANGMULA? I am guessing it is Facebook(now Meta), Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google(now Alphabet), Microsoft, Ubisoft?, L?, Alibaba?.

Edit: found a source that says: Facebook Apple Amazon Netlfix Google Microsoft Uber Lyft Airbnb

melissalobos··on Ask HN: Share your experience of pay raise
Typically in your first year of employment, you move from being entirely clueless to a useful working professional. Think about how much more value you are bringing your employer. Always bargain with your worth in mind. Not the worth you assign yourself, but the worth you would assign your work. If the raise doesn't feel like it matches your growth, jump ship. Employers who don't value you today won't value you tomorrow.
