mekwall··on Sparrow for Windows was just a few weeks away
If this would ever have been released, it would have failed and die a painful death. As stated by the author, he "stole" (which means he faked) many UI elements from OSX because he "dislikes Metro". This is just wrong and bad practice when developing native applications. A UI designer should never design a UI for an OS which he/she dislikes to begin with, it will just end badly.

What makes Sparrow on OSX and iOS so good is that it stays true to its OS; that it feels native and blends into the OS with such grace that it's a thrill to work with. In contrast, web apps doesn't suffer much from this since users are used to them looking different, as long as they exist inside their browser environment. But for Sparrow to be successful on Windows, these rules would apply...

I think you are confusing user interface design with user experience (UX). A text-book UI should be intuitive and easy to use, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be aesthetically pleasing to everyone. I work with UX, and one of the biggest challeges i face is to find a good balance between functionality and aesthetics; what will give the general user base the best possible experience.

But you have to realize that it is impossible to satisfy everyone, especially when looking at OSX-users and Windows-users, who have such different tastes and demands. Then its probably better to have two different UIs that can bring a great (but not necessarily the same) user experience to two very different crowds.

mekwall··on Is Berlin the new home for tech start-up business? [video]
I wouldn't worry too much about a crashing Euro. The exchange rates will most likely become more favourable for other currencies if that would happen. If you plan on staying there a longer period you might even see Germany reverting to Deutsche Mark, which should be even more favourable when exchanging back to your own currency once you leave considering that Germany itself has a very strong economy.

Actually, an economic collapse in the US is one of the most likely things to occur during this century. If you can't see that coming you must be very naive.

Wow! Is that the kind of attitude you have over there? ... I feel bad for you, my neighbour :(

Same goes in Sweden. It's quite easy for us Scandinavians to learn German since our languages are closely related (all except Finnish are Germanic languages). In fact, its the same with English, which is also a Germanic language.
mekwall··on Fay -- A proper subset of Haskell that compiles to Javascript
As always, its a matter of preference. Fay is for devs who prefer the syntax and semantics of Haskell before that of JS, and it will not solve anything else beyond that. The overhead is likely neglible in most cases, and is probably worth it if it lowers development time.

Couldn't agree more. perfunctory is ignorant to believe that building a new programming language would solve the problem. Google is trying just that with Dart, and it will take years before it will be adopted by the other browser vendors, if ever.

These micro-languages (that compiles to JS) try to solve the same fundamental problems that exist in JavaScript, which mostly are syntactic or semantic in nature. But there are some solutions and implementations that will likely help further the development of ECMAScript, so the man-hours spent on creating them aren't all lost.

What do you mean? The performance will be exactly the same as if you implemented it in plain JS. The laziness and closures sure has an impact, but they fill their purposes and the resulting application wouldn't work the same without them.
mekwall··on PHP is much better than what you think
As a developer I have great respect for Fabien Potencier and his contributions to the PHP community. Sadly thoguh, I think he's done so in vain. You cannot fix what's infinitely broken.

* PHP may have evolved to support many new methods and features that is expected from a modern language, but mixing and mashing ideas and implementations from other languages in a semingly random fashion doesn't make a language good; only messy. It still and always will lack a proper philosophical design.

* PHP's ecosystem is far from healthy. It's flooded with outdated and/or badly written code, so it really doesn't matter if dependency management is good. Wordpress is proof of this, just look at the source.

* PHP is neither easy to learn or code (correctly). It's just so forgivable that you can do more or less everything wrong and still have a working application. Fabien, you should know this.

* PHP is a resource hog compared to the competition; even with the tiniest stack. I.e. running Node.js will use less then a third of the resources compared to a LAMP stack.

There will never be a "best language" to rule them all. Every situation have different needs. Sure, PHP have filled its purpose during the years, but I'm certain that we've hit peak-PHP. It's the IE of programming languages, and its slow death have already begun.

How is this news? The article is over one year old.
mekwall··on [dead]
So trash-talking rage posts about a person the other person clearly dislikes is news? Come on.
mekwall··on The Moon’s Giant-Collision Theory Proven Incorrect
The theory was merely proven to be theoretically falsifiable, and not incorrect. They clearly state in the article that they couldn't find any proof of two parents, which for the moment points to the moon having only one parent. This contradicts the previous theory, but doesn't make it false.
