meko··on Blood platelets activated during exercise increase neurogensis: mouse study
That was exactly my experience too. Programming + standing was neigh impossible.
meko··on Study finds Reddit’s ban of its most toxic subreddits worked (2017)
Which is the only thing that happened. Being quarantined' on reddit just means you don't show up in r/all.

Have yet to find a single defense for free speech that wasn't a 'slippery slope' fallacy at it's core.

You're assuming that the basis for their hate is rationality. If they were rational people, they wouldn't be racists/fascists/hate groups/etc. Assuming you're correct that having "some success" removed people from such a path, it's still just drops in a bucket. Recycling the contents of a dumpster won't stop climate change.

"Sunlight is the best disinfectant"

Unless, of, course, the disease is cancer.

meko··on I draw figures for my mathematical lecture notes using Inkscape
You are definitely not the outlier. As someone with a predominantly visual/spatial way of thinking, programming has been a really tough skill to develop because, like math, it's often taught in the symbolic/linguistic manner. Only very recently, since using illustrator to diagram ideas, I am finally making progress on my (not assigned) projects. This seems like such an easy thing to do for most others in this space, but since instruction hasn't offered me the most apt thought patterns to program, have had to come up with my own.
meko··on The Rise and Fall of Internet Art Communities
I've developed a bad habit over the years: just reading the comments. Articles are always so structured and long winded, it often feels like you get the entire gist of the link from a headline and the comment discussion. Trying to change that by reading more of the headlines (at least skimming or reading sections), but it costs more time.
meko··on Adobe will finally kill Flash in 2020
It comes bundled with chrome.
meko··on Google Decides to Monetize Maps
Many Americans have a baseless distrust of government. Our schools teach us from a very young age that "government bad, founding fathers came here from Britain to escape the evil government".
meko··on US halts recent practice of disclosing nuclear weapon total
Of course you're being cheeky but "collectively decided" doesn't fit the bill here. We didn't collectively decide anything.
meko··on Why I Switched from Visual Studio Code to JetBrains WebStorm
Actually your comment was insightful. I have a bad habit of editor jumping. Went from vim (6mo) -> emacs (18mo) -> vscode (8mo) -> and have been using sublime for the last month. Keep switching because I don't feel productive in them and kept getting a grass-is-greener vibe every time I'd see someone online using it. Maybe it's because I never specialized and really got gud with one of them. Would have stuck it out with emacs but using it on windows is a big meh (way too much fiddling, generally speaking). Popped off vscode because... microsoft. although it had the most surface polish of the editors I've tried, and intellisense was nice. Sublime has been good to me so far, but the available themes leave something to be desired, and the emacs keybinds are iffy. Maybe I just haven't found 'the one' and at this point, there are too many features from each editor that I like that I may never find it. Emacs came closest, but learning to configure it was too time intensive, had to cut my losses and find something more portable and time efficient. Guess I'll just stick with sublime from now on and say that's that...
meko··on Aphex Twin Speaks to Tatsuya Takahashi (2017)
Whoops, misread previous comment as "how does he live", as though he 'didn't get' rdj's music, and couldn't fathom how he made a living... Ha ha...
meko··on Aphex Twin Speaks to Tatsuya Takahashi (2017)
He was really ahead of his time in terms of the electronic music sounds he uses. He was also known for unique methods of sound creation (like programming... A toaster? Stuff like that... Can't recall specifics atm).

It takes careful, perhaps repeated listenings. My favorite time to listen to his stuff is while tripping though. From his 'weird' bleeps and bloops emerge something new entirely.

meko··on Learn more programming languages, even if you won't use them
Asked myself that question too but think the answer may be: "it doesn't matter, because that's not the point".
meko··on I got tired of PHP and Perl, so I tried bash
(Last comment didn't post??) To be fair js gets the same bad rap.
meko··on I got tired of PHP and Perl, so I tried bash
That's true about a few languages actually. Javascript being one, C++ being another.
meko··on Org-Mode Is One of the Most Reasonable Markup Languages to Use for Text (2018)
Not sure what you mean by 'out of the box', but orgzly supports local directory syncing which can indeed be used in conjunction. Source: this is my setup.
meko··on Is Anyone Listening to You on Alexa? A Global Team Reviews Audio
Minor correction, you said:

When you actually meant:

meko··on 996, GitHub, and China's digital workers rights awakening
Unabashed orientalism. China blocks as a means of self preservation.
meko··on Unveiling the first-ever image of a black hole [video]
That was a great video, never grasped why interstellar and such showed black holes with the rings on top and bottom.
meko··on Show HN: Ethical Resources – 300 ethical alternatives to mainstream stuff
Vegan is by definition more ethical than non vegan. And yes, palm oil is a controversial good. There are vegan butter alternatives that do not use palm oil (they are usually a couple dollars more expensive). But honestly, how badly do you need a butter substance in your diet?
meko··on Why Physicists Tried to Put a Ferret in a Particle Accelerator
Interesting, since the dutch word for rabbit is 'Konijn', pronounced like 'konen'.
meko··on Gum bacteria implicated in Alzheimer's and other diseases
Americans place a ton of emphasis on oral care. Most of middle class and above get braces as children; many going as far to get corrective procedures (affectionately referred to as 'headgear').
meko··on Wall Street loves socialism for bankers – but not for ordinary people
I just want democratic control of the workplace and a severe reign in, if not elimination of private ownership of businesses and the tools and space used in the operation of those businesses. Putting unions in charge would be one way, but our model of how unions work and the legal frameworks around them would need some improvements.
meko··on More jails replace in-person visits with awful video chat products
That is a very important distinction to make. Private contracts, milking the government by dealing in modern slavery.
meko··on Overview of differential equations [video]
I for one am super in favor of the top-down approach of teaching. Amused because it's similar to how a song is written, or a painting is done: big broad strokes, working forward to then fill in the subject and details
