It follows the defacto standards of the web and not trying to invent a new standard.
- HTTP
- REST/JSON
- Node.js ( Google prefers using Rhino because Appengine does't support Node.js but Java)
- Github (Google prefers using Google Drive)
- Javascript as the glue of APIs by transforming API endpints into Javascript Objects, client-side or server-side.
- HTML views to generate with API calls
Webshell.io has an open API that Google Apps Script doesn't yet.
The webshell's blog is "building an internet operating system" for the web-as-aplatform, where APIs are the "drivers" of the web.
So definitively the web as a platform is coming.
The true question behind this post is : the web is a decentralized network, so will developers will use a centralized platform for making applications on the web? Is open source platforms the solution?
To answer the article, learning what will not be our everyday job is called "curiosity, knowledge and culture"
With webshell, we are more focused on services execution, as for client side as server side.
For example we enable custom HTML views for GoogleMaps, Google Chart, Twitter feeds or other APIs.
The main difference is that we combine all kind of APIs. We also made a platform on top of the language.
This plaform enables to re-use each script as a new REST/JSON API by other developers, thanks our file system designed as a kind of "Github for APIs."
This is not an Internet Tax...
Either is the standard, either it the the most adapted product/company (not necesseraly technologically) which wins the pot. This is technology AND business model, user community, strategic partnerships which will make an API to rule them all a defacto standard which will lead the programmable web. But you're right that IETF standards for APIs may be so long that I consider it is not possible untill decades !(or a leader which will open and free its winning standart to all only)
http://Zapier.com, http://IFTTT.com, http://rules.io and http://elastic.io, http://ritc.io , http://kynetx.com/
or more focused on developers like :
http://temboo.com, http://singly.com, http://webscript.io, http://cloudsnap.com, http://script.google.com , http://webshell.io
What would be your main paradigm and what do you want to bring to the ecosystem?
Disclosure : I work for webshell.io and lol to see that your post make reactions of lots of API of APIs company (Singly, Cloudsnap, Ritc.io)
If some one in this page wants to reach us for open discussion for making the web programmable in an easier way team[at]webshell.io
But yes for a desktop you are right. "credit card details and download"
Red investors oceans represent to all the industries in existence today – the known Investor space. In the red oceans, investors boundaries are defined and accepted, and the competitive rules of the game are known. Here start-ups try to outperform their other start-ups rivals to grab a greater share of investment demand. As the funding market space gets crowded, prospects for high valuation and rapid investments are reduced. Products become commodities or niche, and cutthroat competition turns the ocean bloody; hence, the term red oceans.
Blue investor oceans, in contrast, denote all the industries not in existence today – the unknown investor market space, untainted by start-up competition. In blue oceans, investment demand is created rather than fought over. There is ample opportunity for high valuation and rapid investment. In blue oceans, start-up competition for funding is irrelevant because the rules of the game are waiting to be set. Blue investment ocean is an analogy to describe the wider, deeper potential of investor space that is not yet explored.
(Adaptation of Wkipedia article on blue ocean strategy for investment for start-ups)
In your article the "guilder-investing angels" are the blue ocean for investment in start-ups.
