meh2frdf··on Mastering Layout Engines in Graphviz: Dot vs. Neato vs. Twopi vs. Circo
I’ve been working in this area recently, none of the layout engine are very good, they essentially apply the same algorithm to all the things when really a graph is often a collection of different patterns and what makes sense is often semantics driven. So yes built my own, the use case is representing cloud and enterprise architectures. Have a decent layout engine now, and created a declarative dsl for the agent to interact with, but the agent sucks, feels like we need to hand roll a lot of features/skills

Likewise, it's very impressive and useful, but it is obviously not AGI to those of us from that era.

If anything, the fact that it is so powerful is almost a concern, because I think we are still way underestimating what these systems will be able to do when we give them more cognitive capabilities.

At the moment we are something like, having had great success with propellers and have promised we will fly to the stars.

People love to say 'this is the worse they will ever be', then extrapolate to conclusion that they will continue to accelerate at the same rate of progress of last few years .. it may, maybe, or we will hit a ceiling, might be a temporary one, could be 5 years or 50 years ..

Also if it ever says, "I've found the root cause of ..", it definitely has not found the root cause and is making a non evidence based guess as it has run out of ideas.

You need more safeguards for sure, but also it tends to fly off down rabbit holes, rebuilding things in dumb ways, hacking around things, making assumptions etc, it seems very eager to go 'ta da! I did it look how quick I was', sometimes it nails it other times it created a lot of tech debt.

The flash models, for coding are reckless in my experience. I have a Ultimate subscription, get good quota, but still use Opus 4.6 as it's much more reliable if you manage the context window carefully.

The driving in Portugal is notoriously bad, yeah maybe not such a concern in your tourist experience in Lisbon center, because you can't really go fast. Get out on the motorways and country roads and your opinion will soon change.
meh2frdf··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
If the terms are unfair, then don't agree to them, that is a consumer choice, don't agree to agreements you disagree with!
meh2frdf··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
Should according to you, as it serves you best that way. Not how the world works, and for sound economic reasons.

meh2frdf··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
But the issue is those terms are laid out in the agreement, and you willingly agreed to those terms, so what are arguing for is to welch on the deal you accepted?

In terms in consumer protection, at least in UK and Europe (not saying not elsewhere, just don't know much), there is an amount of regulation that tries to help consumers not get screwed in the legalese of these agreements, and some basic protections that can't override.

meh2frdf··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
No not really.

When you bought a VHS of a movie, you purchased the video cassette hardware, but also a license which was bundled with that object.

That license explicitly had some constraints on it, such as not broadcasting the IP in a public setting, even calling out specific locations like oil rigs.

Distinguishing between products and service, isn't great, as neither are well defined, and end up back in the same debates.

meh2frdf··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
This I think is fair, consumers generally have a very poor understanding of licensing.

Too many still think in the old days of buying physical goods, you 'buy' a tin of beans, they are now in all sense my beans.

I'm all for helping people distinguish, when something is a straight forward property transaction, or an agreement based on permisions, constraints and obligations ... a license.

meh2frdf··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
Which is all detailed as something they can do in the licence you bought but obviously didn't understand (which is fine I don't read the details either).

You seem to have semantics you apply to the word 'buy' and think the world should align to that, it clearly does not.

meh2frdf··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
You are 'buying' some thing, a licence that grant you some permissions (aka rights). That licence has some constraints, you don't like them, then don't buy the licence. It's literally how it works, you just don't seem to grasp that.

Now are the constraints on licences (aka agreement), not great, not consumer friendly .. different set of questions.

meh2frdf··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
Yeah the OP doesn't understand licensing, seems to only think of purchase in terms of physical goods, and is trying to poorly apply their reasoning based on that.

I honestly don’t see it matters, it’s a nice option but being open data is totally optional.
meh2frdf··on RDF 1.1 Primer (2014)
URIs a mostly namespaces, it has no bearing on being private data. If you know what your doing you’ll be using ontologies made by others, and like having a namespace for a library you’ll want the same for the terms/classes you use from them.

I think they are fixating too much on the vr aspect (ie the virtual model/graphics), I think the world you perceive via sight and sound being processed/mined and providing useful personal context aware applications is the key. For example an app that can whisper in you ear the name of every person you meet.
meh2frdf··on Ireland raises privacy question over Facebook smart glasses
My prescription glasses are ray bans, I need a new pair and I’m quite tempted to get these. I like the built in headphones and I’m interested in being able to take pics of my kids easily or even anything else to be honest, but I’m not a creep and have no interest in taking pics of random people.

Yet, will it be assumed I am a glass hole for wearing these, peer pressure from the paranoid! Done nothing wrong yet judged and punished ...
