medstrom··on Why Does Elisp Suck
But (setq variable var) looks the same in CL and ELisp, so it takes the same amount of learning to customize, right? It is not more to learn just because there exist more possibilities in the language.
medstrom··on Why Does Elisp Suck
I experimented with that, but it doesn't use more than one CPU core, so it's more of a proof of concept at the moment.

You could use it to make non-blocking user experience perhaps, but you could also do it using `while-no-input` or a library like deferred.el or my https://github.com/meedstrom/asyncloop.

Anyway, there is `make-process` for multicore work. Takes some boilerplate and studying, but no more than with threads.

medstrom··on Why Does Elisp Suck
Yes, on the particular issue of company/corfu, I'm actually tempted to see if we can't just specify that the work of `completion-at-point-functions` must be done in an external process. Then calling `completion-at-point` would never directly call third-party code that may block the main thread.

Maybe for speed, `completion-at-point` would keep a fairly recent `dump-emacs-portable` image, and spin up external processes using that, with has the bonus that the completion-at-point-functions get to inspect current state.

medstrom··on A symbol for the Fediverse
Yes, I read it that way too. Which meant that they were under the impression that it is easy to infer tone, so I replied with a serious explanation why it may not be.
medstrom··on About the browser choice screen in the EU
They do have backgrounds. White backgrounds. You don't see it there but it'd be obvious on your homescreen.
medstrom··on A symbol for the Fediverse
Exactly, it is the illusion of transparency. Have someone read something you've written out loud, you'd be surprised how often they use a different tone than you had in mind. Add to that a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
medstrom··on We don't know how bad most things are nor precisely how they're bad
They said the piano will be imperfectly tuned even when it was tuned just now, if the job was done by an average-skilled tuner.
medstrom··on Why has nuclear power been a flop? (2021)
LessWrong emphasises taking human factors into account all the time. Maybe you're thinking of RationalWiki or some such site?
medstrom··on Why has nuclear power been a flop? (2021)
Does the US not legislate that a NPP should be built with certain minimum amount of concrete that is far higher than needed? I read somewhere that lobbies inflate the cost so they will not be built, IDK if that's true.
medstrom··on There Is No Antimemetics Division (2018)
Another highlight of Worm: it's one of those universes that works very well for cross-over fanfiction. Like Stargate.

...Oddly, very few Stargate-Worm crossovers. A good Fallout-Worm comedy: https://m.fanfiction.net/s/12952969/

medstrom··on Basic ReAct webapp using FastHTML and LangGraph
ReasonAct or something.
medstrom··on The secret of Minecraft (2014)
Hardcore may strain a friendship when one of you die. Better single-player. There are other ways to up the stakes with a friend, e.g. all of these:

1. Hard difficulty

2. No armor or shields

3. Don't stockpile any ore or equipment beyond what you want to carry, so when you respawn you have literally zero iron, diamonds, tools

medstrom··on Jailbroke my Kindle to use it as an e-ink monitor
I don't think phpBB threads ever change URL these days. It's only unreliable if the forum is managed by a video game company, because they delete the whole forum every now and then to renew their website. But MobileRead is well-known and enduring.
medstrom··on Jailbroke my Kindle to use it as an e-ink monitor
You could have /home/junk2020, /home/junk2021, /home/junk2022 etc. Still self-cleaning, but it's once a year.
medstrom··on Jailbroke my Kindle to use it as an e-ink monitor
What do you mean "random"? Does the post lack some info or why is it not good enough?

medstrom··on "We ran out of columns"
Yes, so you invent CVS, not git.
medstrom··on Hundred Rabbits is a small collective exploring the failability of modern tech
It's like how you can say that VT100 emulation has an expiration date, but you can't say that about the underlying concept of some UI based on a screenful of monospaced text, which is immortal.
medstrom··on Hundred Rabbits is a small collective exploring the failability of modern tech
Any crypto you did couldn't be future-proof in the way it is today though. Don't know if that's mainly due to better algorithms or from the fact modern CPUs are optimized to rapidly decrypt/encrypt things.
medstrom··on My mental model of setf was wrong
Sure, if I squint a lot. For how I read it, your paraphrase took it far from the original meaning.
medstrom··on My mental model of setf was wrong
That quote's not in TFA, nor anything like it.
medstrom··on "Authentic" is dead. And so is "is dead."
Really liked one of the linked articles https://longform.asmartbear.com/opposite-test/ which grounds better for me why these phrases are supposed to be dead.

medstrom··on The secret of Minecraft (2014)
Not even network speed. If you're just playing multiplayer on 1 console, that creates a client-server setup behind the scenes. On the Nintendo Switch, boat travel is hell because every 20 seconds you'll hit the invisble wall at the edge of the sea that makes you wait 20 more seconds before you can continue rowing.
medstrom··on The secret of Minecraft (2014)
> Removed supernatural or fantastical minecraft mobs: no zombies, skeletons, creepers, endermen, etc.

No zombies? That is mind-blowing. I love the vision you outline at 13:40-15:40, will play when I get a beefy enough computer for Minecraft mods ;-)

medstrom··on Switzerland mandates government agencies use open-source software
> if you just want to give Swiss people some tax revenue back

But they don't just want to do that. I'm not an economist, but I don't think RoI ("return on investment") means the same thing for a government that it does for a corporation. Any money "thrown away" comes back in some way, which creates many opportunities to kill two birds with one stone.

medstrom··on Switzerland mandates government agencies use open-source software
But it'd be Swiss IT guys getting paid, right? That money goes back into Switzerland.
medstrom··on Inline previous result in Emacs Lisp
The "inline" thingy can be seen as a popup/tooltip, could span many lines.
