mediasavvy··on Toxic toddler fruit pouches: "high" lead levels sicken 7 in 5 states
More like buying cheap cinnamon, and not checking for lead. Which is kind of the same thing.
mediasavvy··on Cops Are Suing a Teen for Invasion of Privacy After False Arrest Vid Goes Viral
That isn’t necessary. Iowa has no-fault divorce.
mediasavvy··on Amazon corporate workers plan walkout next week over return-to-office policies
> acting like musk is a raving lunatic for sympathizing with minimum wage workers who bus to work is nothing short of supreme stupidity

It’s called concern trolling

mediasavvy··on Etsy Delays Seller Payouts Due to Run on Silicon Valley Bank
Did I miss Etsy declaring bankruptcy?
mediasavvy··on SVB in talks to sell itself after attempts to raise capital fail
If it were just the economic issues, why aren’t more banks in this situation?
mediasavvy··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
> Where is the next Dahl? Why is there no modern Beatrix Potter

Do you have a child? There are all kinds of amazing children’s authors, loved by parents and kids, that have been creating books over the last 20 years.

mediasavvy··on A New Backdoor Around the Fourth Amendment: The CLOUD Act
IANAL, but is there an enforcement or oversight mechanism?
mediasavvy··on Trade school, not 4-year college, is a better bet to solve the US income gap
What percentage of self-made billionaires started out as millionaires?

what percentage of poor people become self-made billionaires?

What percentage of poor people who become self-made billionaires do so by going to trade school?

mediasavvy··on When will librarians start to throw offline literature away?
Double Fold, by Nicholson Baker, is a remarkable discussion of what's lost when libraries destroy bound newspapers when they are "replaced" by microfilm.

mediasavvy··on Reflections on YC and Moving Forward
Real Money Gaming? The word is gambling.

To say you're "not going to be improving someone's everyday life" is an understatement.

mediasavvy··on The new Disqus 2012: Elevating the Discussion
Relationship with my commenters always been an issue for me when I've considered Disqus.

I'm sure I'm not the only site owner who requires real names and cultivates community among his commenters.

Having said that, Disqus looks like an excellent solution for the vast majority of sites, where the quality of the comments and sense of community is very low indeed.

mediasavvy··on Okay, Okay, Maybe Netflix Is a Problem for Cable After All
We cut the cable three years ago. And in our community, no cable means no TV. It's probably not the much cheaper, to be honest. The big difference for us has been the cutting random channel-surfing and our family's exposure to loud, mentally corrosive cable TV advertising.
mediasavvy··on Bank Not Responsible for Letting Hackers Steal $300K From Customer
Clearly the bank's customer has some responsibility here.

But it's not clear that the bank gave its customers the backup they needed in the event that an account is compromised. And accounts will be compromised.

Only the bank can improve the security of large electronic transactions. And if the bank is not held responsible, they have no incentive to do so.

mediasavvy··on Going Paper-Free for $220
I've used a Neat scanner, which is similar to the Doxie. I can't imagine going paperless with a slow, manual scanner. Unless my life were a lot simpler than it is right now.

The ScanSnap seems to be universally praised for its speed and reliability, and a better bet if you can afford it.

I usually toss my old documents in sink filled with warm water and detergent. It turns them into slurry quickly enough, with no need for a shredder taking up space in my office.
