mechnik··on A Sandwich, a Startup, and Soon, a Lawsuit? The Crunchbutton Story
I remember when a student would walk through the dorms each afternoon, yelling 'Bagelman is here'. His business was sanctioned by the university, otherwise it was his own affair. These days, instead of yelling, you could have a phone app which would alert customers that the seller is near, transmit orders to him/her, maybe even use a mobile payment scheme to complete the transaction for whatever.

I imagine Brown has some sort of student run "Student Services", e.g. fridge rentals, bagel deliveries, bouncers, etc..., and would welcome service such as yours if it were run by its own students. Why not offer an affiliate/franchise campus program?
mechnik··on Adderall Addiction: The Last All-Nighter
Yoga and meditation may benefit anyone. There is considerable interest in mindfulness techniques for ADD treatment. Search for 'mindfulness ADHD'.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

The free bird leaps on the back of the win and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wings in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with fearful trill of the things unknown but longed for still and is tune is heard on the distant hillfor the caged bird sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze an the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom.

mechnik··on Ask HN: Could this work as an alternative to pinch-to-zoom for touchscreens?
Would it still be an issue if you drew a long tail '6'? No circle: drag. Circle: zoom.
mechnik··on Ask HN: Could this work as an alternative to pinch-to-zoom for touchscreens?
I like it.

What do you think about user defined movements for various actions?

Also, it does not need to be a screen touch. The phones have all sorts of sensors, maybe you could simply wink at it, tilt your head, tilt the phone...

mechnik··on Ask HN: Could this work as an alternative to pinch-to-zoom for touchscreens?
I am glad you like it.

Small circle, like spooning something, hooking a fish with a rod, or hooking spaghetti on a fork, would target the area, and the line length would control the size.

A simple(r?) overall movement, with one finger.

Speaking of very small screens, could it support something like Google Glass?
mechnik··on #BoycottApple trending on Google plus due to Galaxy Nexus ban
Good thinking.

I wish a high quality device without pre-installed OS was available.

Great specs similar to GNex, at an affordable price comparable to $350 Google charges for unlocked units.

Let customers run whatever OS they wish.

WebOS, Android, iOS, Windows, any one in particular or all at once.

Might want to revisit all those centuries of Chinese history. There is a gap of over 300 years between the fall of Ming dynasty and the establishment of the People's Republic of China, roughly from the time Mayflower Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock to the end of WW2.
mechnik··on Humans hot, sweaty, natural-born runners
Fascinating story. One of this book's main characters, Micah True aka Caballo Blanco, died last week on a remote Western wilderness run. Don't know if he had his boots on. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hZ-OB7jl7Y...
mechnik··on What kind of buddhist was Steve Jobs, really?
Steve Jobs, imperfect.

His core, perfection itself.

Old pond, droid jumps in.

mechnik··on What kind of buddhist was Steve Jobs, really?
Zen first flowered in Japan during the Kamakura period because it appealed to samurai as a no-nonsense approach to dealing with that time period's problems (i.e. Mongol invasion) Over the years, the mumbo-jumbo factor accrues, but there are always reformers who try to keep Zen practice relevant (e.g. Shunryu Suzuki).
mechnik··on What kind of buddhist was Steve Jobs, really?
The OP article is as good exposition of Buddhist thought and practice as you will find. Shunryu Suzuki mentioned in it was an exponent of the Soto school of Zen which emphasizes 'just sitting'. Just that, sit with straight back. Look up 'seiza' for more information if you wish, but no need to get too technical. Also, I believe there are online meditation support groups if none are available near you.

sounds like a Mother Goose tongue twister: she sells seashells by the seashore, the shells she sells are seashells I am sure, so if she sells seashells by the seashore, I am sure the shells are seashore seashells.
mechnik··on Google says Nexus One too old for Android 4.0
I hope Cyanogenmod or someone else will release one. Cyanogenmod version of 2.3 for N1 and other phones, came out as 'nightly' release ages before the official Google release. Does anyone know what are the hardware limitations to adapting ICS?
