mech422··on WireGuard Performance with a Pi Zero (2019)
Gotta plug my fav's - odroid h2/3/4's ...

Low power, fairly cheap, x86 based, onboard NIC (sometime 2), NVME/Sata and large memory support for lots of containers/etc. Also, low power draw! :-) I've been loving my H2+'s and I got some H4s in I need to find time to play with...

mech422··on Show HN: Go Plan9 Memo
Ohh...thats a name I haven't heard in a while... along with the purdue compiler construction kit

funny how CLang basically blew right by them in terms of option as a 'base' to build languages on.

mech422··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?
LOL - Haven't seen that one in ages...

I'm looking at pijul..

mech422··on Why do systems fail? Tandem NonStop system and fault tolerance
Yeah - Stratus rocked :-) The 'big battle' used to be between Non-Stops more 'software based' fault tolerance VS. Stratus's fully hardware level high availability. I used to love demo'ing our Stratus systems to clients and let them pull boards while the machine was running...Just don't pull 2 next to each other :-)

Also, I think Stratus was the first (only?) computer IBM re-badged at the time - IBM sold Stratus's as the Model 88, IIRC

mech422··on Everything you need to know about Python 3.13 – JIT and GIL went up the hill
PyPy seems soo underrated....

So much work, and so little recognition :-/ I was looking forward to trying it out but moved off python before the libraries I used were compatible (sqlalchemy I believe was the one I was really wanting...)

mech422··on 88-year-old 'Skyrim Grandma' is retiring
I hope she enjoys herself... She's been a huge help and source of entertainment for many people... One of the few relaxing, upbeat, no stress streams you can watch :-D
mech422··on Tech Jobs Have Dried Up–and Aren't Coming Back Soon
yeah - the bls data still looks pretty good...as long as you check 'software developer' and not 'programmer' :-P

guess BLS likes title inflation at least...

mech422··on A high-performance, zero-overhead, extensible Python compiler using LLVM
Might want to look at PyPy too: https://pypy.org/features.html
mech422··on How come we never hear of PyPy anymore?
I suppose - though we still seem to have interest in a 'faster' python, and its more compatible then a lot of the alternatives. They had just gotten SQLAlchemy(?) working with it when I moved on to other stuff, so I never got a chance to try it out for 'real' work...

I have to admit though, I don't reach for python as much as I used to, so I can see your point.

mech422··on Ask HN: What runs L4-related microkernels/hypervisors these days?
Thanks man - definitely gonna have a go at then :-)
mech422··on Why Scrum is stressing you out
LOL - that sounds uncomfortably accurate :-)
mech422··on Ask HN: What runs L4-related microkernels/hypervisors these days?
Oh! How is it for a dev. box ?? Can you get gcc/clang/rust/python ? Does it have a decent browser and code editor?

It sounds like fun to play with - I've been wanting to try something new...

mech422··on Ask HN: What runs L4-related microkernels/hypervisors these days?
This(1)(2) any good for ya?

This(1)(2) might hold you over for a bit: "Genode's microkernel architecture, capability-based security, sandboxed device drivers, and virtual machines in a novel operating system for commodity PC hardware and the PinePhone. Sculpt is used as day-to-day OS by the Genode developers. "

It looks pretty neat - could be fun to play with!

mech422··on Can't find a job? It's not you, it's white-collar America
yeah - but most programmers have less then 10 years experience... so they never saw those things.

All the panic seems a bit overblown to me, but I have to remind myself that for a lot (most ?) of programmers - this is the first market downturn they've seen.

mech422··on Ask HN: What is your plan if AI ends coding as a profession in 2-3 years?
Ohh - that sounds awesome! If I get to that point, I'll buy a boat ! :-)
mech422··on Cosmos – dactyl like keyboard generator
Wow! This is SOOO cool !! I tried to convert a dactyl generating program on github from scala to something I could read, but ended up going crazy!

The interface is gorgeous, and pretty fast (though progress indicator seems to get stuck at 27% even though the model is fully rendered). Soooo many options! and it even let me do an orbyl right hand for trackball with a manuform left hand!

REALLY looking forward to this!

The timing is perfect for me too, as my new 3D printer (infimech) arrives today!

mech422··on Ask HN: What is your plan if AI ends coding as a profession in 2-3 years?
Thanks for the chuckle :-)

My 'retirement plan' is to be the last living COBOL coder :-D $5K/hr should be about right :-D

mech422··on Ask HN: What is your plan if AI ends coding as a profession in 2-3 years?
I have to remind myself a lot of programmers these days have never seen a 'down' market, and get truly worried about the 'end of programmers'...

You have to be pretty long in the tooth now to remember .com crash, off-shoring, hell - even the 2008 stuff ended like 14 years ago.

Thats not even mentioning cobol, 4th GL langs, RAD, low-code, no-code and god know what else was supposed to put us all out of work.

This too shall pass... :-)

mech422··on The Bands and the Fans Were Fake. The $10M Was Real
Oddly enough - the guy behind Milli Vanilli (Frank Farian),had done the exact same thing before..He wrote the song 'Rasputin' and then created the lip sync band 'BoneyM' to 'perform' it...

BoneyM went on to have a pretty big career, including "Rivers of Babylon/Brown Girl in the Ring", which was a hit all over Europe, reaching no.1 in several countries as well as becoming one of the biggest selling singles of all time in the UK.

Years after BoneyM, he did the same thing with Milli Vanilli

If it ain't broke, don't fix it ? :-D

mech422··on Ask HN: What are exciting companies you'd love to work at?
Oh! Thanks!
mech422··on Low Cost Mini PCs
Gotta throw in a mention of my fav: Odroid H2/3/4(1) $125ish for an SBC with Intel N/J series CPU, DDR4/DDR5, up to 32G RAM, SATA, Dual Ethernet etc. I have the old H2+ series and LOVE them :-)

mech422··on Ask HN: What are exciting companies you'd love to work at?
Lately, I've thought it would be cool to work for an agricultural robot/equipment company. Interesting problems (computer vision, system control, navigation, etc.) and working on something that could actually help the world...
mech422··on GeoWorks: The Other Windows (2019)
Heh - yeah, 'paperclip' and a dot matrix printer (epson mx 80? or a commodore one?) got me thru high school :-)
mech422··on The Shameful Defenestration of Tim
I've not followed any of the Nix drama (nor anything but the most basic Nix posts).

I will say, having known McDonc for like 15-20 years - I would tend to take anything he has to say seriously.

mech422··on Things I Won't Work With: Dimethylcadmium (2013)
Derek Lowe's stuff is awesome - Probably the most famous 'stuff I won't work with' is 'sand won't save you this time' ...

mech422··on Funtoo Linux is shutting down
Drobbins founded both gentoo and funtoo - so they're bound to be very similar. He basically fell in love with BSD 'ports' back around 2000, and decided to build (two!) distro's based around the idea in it...
mech422··on Funtoo Linux is shutting down
yeah - given his comments about hosting containers and what-not, it sounded like he has some community. I'm guessing after 20 years of doing distro's he's just looking for a new itch to scratch. Looking forward to seeing what it is..
mech422··on Funtoo Linux is shutting down
I worked with Drobbins way back in like '00 on Stampede Linux. He's been doing cool distro stuff for like 20+ years now. I'm a bit sad its not fun for him anymore, but I look forward to hearing about what he tries next :-)
