mech422··on IT Unemployment Rises to 5.7% as AI Hits Tech Jobs
Personally, I'd classify jobs such as reporting and clerical administration more as 'admin' then IT. You do some of that as a SWE (tickets, SoW, Design docs) but that's not generally the focus of the work.
mech422··on Are LLMs able to notice the “gorilla in the data”?
I still think that is such a simple, easy litmus test... genius :-)
mech422··on The Head (Ted Carstensen) of USDS (Digital Services) Resigns
Makes sense...

I was more thinking from a system design/security standpoint...I haven't heard anything about any senior/experienced engineers being used for anything atm ...

mech422··on How is the market for developers with 10+ years of experience?
I've noticed a _surprising_ number of jobs coming thru linkedIn - way beyond the typical Q1 uptick...

Enough that I'm wondering how many are actually real, as opposed to ghost jobs, scams, etc.

mech422··on The Head (Ted Carstensen) of USDS (Digital Services) Resigns
I'm actually surprised we haven't heard anything on HN from USDS employees - I'm pretty sure some of them are HN members/readers...

It must be truly chaotic atm with everything from dept. renames/new mgmt to time limited 'buy out' offers...

mech422··on Oracle justified its JavaScript trademark with Node.js–now it wants that ignored
LOL - fair enough. Always sounded like a skin condition to me.. (I'm not a JS programmer though)
mech422··on Oracle justified its JavaScript trademark with Node.js–now it wants that ignored
I thought that was 'ecmascript' ??
mech422··on Google drops pledge not to use AI for weapons or surveillance
Don't we have that already? Bootstrapped startups with the founders money on the line typically don't play in the 'big league's till way after the founder is at risk..
mech422··on Musk says DOGE is halting Treasury payments to US contractors
I believe it was actually 'connecting hard drives'... but letting random's (apparently without clearances at the time, though I think they've been granted now...) open up your machines and physically install NVME/Spinners would be even worse then USB, IMHO
mech422··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2025)
Heh - cute regex :-D Brings a bit of whimsy to a pretty dry thread :-D
mech422··on Musk says DOGE is halting Treasury payments to US contractors
It appears Musk's employees don't have clearance - which is apparently why they were denied access by the USAID _security_ officials. Its sorta their jobs. Given a lot of us work in Tech, I doubt most of our security officers would accept "tons of line employess" have access as an excuse :-P Not to mention plugging in hard drives (how are federal system even allowing usb devices to be accessed?? My stupid work laptop locks that down ??)

Also, there may not be 'check and balances' but there is certainly procedure - which seems to be why lawsuits were filed. Specifically it appears around: "whether DOGE is a presidential advisory commission obeying federal transparency rules about certain practices, such as disclosure and hiring" and "alleged violation of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which requires that "the advisory committee have a fair balance in viewpoints represented, that they do not meet in secret, and that their records and work product be made available for public inspection."

Anyway - guess we'll see how it plays out - but I wish there were some more clear cut explanations about

mech422··on The PETG adhesive test [video]
Sounds like an ABS or ASA blend ?
mech422··on Musk says DOGE is halting Treasury payments to US contractors
I'd probably have to agree, something along those lines...

However, I can't say "Govt by good ole boy network" seems proper - and its really hard to figure out what power/limits/check and balances for all this is... Musk basically took over the IT arm of the executive branch ("U.S. Digital Service") - not sure how that allows him and other people without clearances access to secure data, or to make spending decisions for other groups..

mech422··on Musk says DOGE is halting Treasury payments to US contractors
>>As to why Musk can do it. Treasury is a department, not even an independent agency. The president runs it, along with the president’s appointee the secretary of treasury. DOGE is an office within the Executive Office of the President.

That doesn't give Musk or DOGE authority over it, any more then the dept. of the Interior can control what gets paid..

mech422··on Kernel WiFi driver maintainer steps down without a replacement
While I agree with your sentiment re: giant orgs, it appears in this case one did fund his work.. "Kalle Valo who has been a Qualcomm Atheros engineer for more than the past decade"

Either way - I thank them for all their hard work, and hope they enjoy whatever comes next! :-)

mech422··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
IIRC, rather then negotiate with the experienced union controllers until an agreement was made - they brought in inexperienced non-union controllers..

source: my uncle was an ATC during the strike. I believe he was a shift lead/supervisor and was NOT part of the walk out. He was appalled at how bad the replacements were and was going crazy trying to get them up to snuff.

mech422··on Elon Musk, Video Game King? Well, Maybe Not
In Hughes's case, it was likely syphilis...
mech422··on Fault Tolerance in Tandem Computer Systems (1986) [pdf]
Oh? I didn't realize they used hardware level on MIPS

Stratus was pretty nice - I liked VOS :-)

mech422··on Fault Tolerance in Tandem Computer Systems (1986)[pdf]
bah - Team Stratus!! None of this wanna be software redundancy - real computers do it hardware !!

/jk

Always was a bit of rivalry between them (at least with Wall St. data centers)

mech422··on Evolution of software architecture with the co-creator of UML (Grady Booch) [video]
Acckk...Booch is back... noooo... I don't wanna buy more books or learn more 'revolutionary' new paradigms... did that all thru the 80s-90s :-P
mech422··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
Part of getting pardoned is admitting guilt - ask joe arpaio ...
mech422··on Why do bees die when they sting you? (2021)
but I need my second left hand to film for Insta! :-P
mech422··on Ropey – A UTF8 text rope for manipulating and editing large text
They just had a release as well :-) It doesn't really seem to get much press anymore... Back in the 'early days' - wow! E! was something pretty special :-D
mech422··on Ask HN: A Career Dilemma
>>Being in tech is all about pivoting

And remembering stuff 30 years later so you can be one of the last 10 people left that remember it. I figure COBOL should make a nice lil side hustle when I retire :-P

mech422··on Meta is killing off its AI-powered Instagram and Facebook profiles
Soo...they didn't learn anything from Microsoft's failed attempts at leaving an A.I. on the net ??

what was it ?? 48 hours before MS had to take them down ?

mech422··on 'Person of Interest' in CEO Shooting Has Background in Games Industry
Interesting they went with 'Games Industry' angle rather then mention he studied AI or worked as a data engineer in the title
mech422··on Sora is here
cop out... according to you, the idea is so obvious it wouldn't be worth anything.
mech422··on Itch.io Taken Down by Funko
I've been using easyDNS for 5(10?) years... Never had a problem with them and highly recommend them. I do 'hobby stuff' - nothing fancy, but it always just works. One time I called to ask if they support wildcard sub-domains (www..example.com or whatever..example.com) and actually had a real engineer pick up the phone :-) (btw - it did work, very well actually :-) )

The backup mail spool is nice too...

all in all - not the cheapest - but worth the piece of mind in my book :-D

mech422··on Unless my phone can be a PC, I don't want to keep paying for extra performance
that is pretty cool - wonder if it supports keyboard/mouse too ?
mech422··on Dygma Defy – a year with the ergonomic split keyboard
Nice write up! Especially for people that might not be 'into keebs'. Decent explanation of what the buzzwords mean, and why they might be important to you. I also learned of the glove80, which I'd never seen before so that was a nice bonus.

Personal Note: I really wish boards with a 'thumb-ball' would get a bit more popular. I'd love something like a dactyl but they are pretty niche atm.
