meanmrmustard92··on O-Ring Automation
It's a reference to a model of growth that in itself is a reference to the challenger disaster. Basically something like a "weakest link" theory of growth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-ring_theory_of_economic_deve...

Was surprised to see this here; i think it is a good model for thinking about tech productivity

meanmrmustard92··on What went wrong with wireless USB

meanmrmustard92··on Pulsar – A Community-Led Hyper-Hackable Text Editor
Folks who know Pulsar and Zed internals: which one of them is more likely to gain support for Atom packages? I find Hydrogen[1] invaluable as a data science scratchpad since it supports python/r/julia/etc under a common interface via jupyter, and have been unable to construct a comparable workflow in vscode or any other editor [using scripts as opposed to notebooks, which i find far too bloated].

meanmrmustard92··on Elixir for Humans Who Know Python
I like how programming language article/book title cliches are cross-pollinating now. In a decade, I hope we'll have "Bite size julia for morons who know how to stand on one leg and can read perl"

meanmrmustard92··on Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang are cooperating in the criminal case against SBF
Caroline's dad is an MIT econ prof and wrote a series of books titled Hard Math for X. New installment should surely be Hard Math for Crypto Fraud and Jail Evasion.
meanmrmustard92··on Why it’s hard to buy deodorant in Manhattan
Some speculated that prosecutors had gone soft on looting after the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. But it is hard to see any such trend in the data: generally states with more shoplifting prosecute more shoplifters

The claim is about the time-series comparison, and the rebuttal is about the cross section comparison. Is the journalist in question stupid, gaslighting, or both?

meanmrmustard92··on My full statement regarding DOOM Eternal
Marty came across as a slimy prick in the (otherwise excellent) Noclip documentary about the making of Doom (2016). Turns out the real-life version is much worse.
meanmrmustard92··on Programming Fonts
TIL Luc Devroye has time to design and maintain fonts. Legend.
meanmrmustard92··on Goodbye, Feedly
I pay for Inoreader and really like it. Somewhat ironically, its killer feature for my use case is the ability to ingest emailed content will make emailed content look like any other RSS feed, since lots of scientific journals / sites have stopped using RSS.
meanmrmustard92··on Launching Version 13.1 of Wolfram Language and Mathematica
Paul Romer on Mathematica is a good read. https://paulromer.net/jupyter-mathematica-and-the-future-of-...
meanmrmustard92··on Katapayadi System
This is cool + reminds me of [Konnakol](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konnakol) , which is a similar system for time signatures in music. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2LzlLMbqpM) is a good intro.
meanmrmustard92··on Sunsetting Atom
RIP. Hydrogen [https://atom.io/packages/hydrogen] running on Atom is the cleanest multi-lingual data science IDE in existence and has been my go-to for years. Haven't found a drop-in replacement elsewhere [vscode's language support is scattered: native python integration, different for R, Julia etc].

Anyone on HN have recs [besides vim slime or send-to-terminal options in other editors, which work but are clunky] ?

meanmrmustard92··on SomaFM
Shpongle and OTT are amazing goa-ish electronica. OTT's new album is great.
meanmrmustard92··on Show HN: Lists.sh – A Microblog for Lists
This might run counter to the super minimal setup, and feel free to ignore if so, but mathjax/katex support would be nice. I often have simple ideas that can be summarised in a couple of lines of math that could really benefit from a light platform like this.
meanmrmustard92··on Ask HN: Do you use an optimization solver? Which one? Do you like it?
Academic use: CVX[R/Py] are excellent because they plug into both open source and commercial (Gurobi, Mosek).
meanmrmustard92··on Easily handle CLI operation via Python instead of regular Bash programs
Powershell doesn't simply enter the chat. Powershell enters-its-username-and-password-and-hits-enter the chat.

[I'm usually a fan of informative command names, but surely there's a happy medium]

meanmrmustard92··on JupyterLab Desktop App now available
I've been using a poor-man's version of this using a tab-to-window chrome extension for a while https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tab-to-windowpopup...

seems like the desktop app doesn't support extensions yet (need my vim and snippets), so I'll stick to the original for now.

meanmrmustard92··on Learn R Through Examples (2020)
hard second. ggplot2 was the last (only) good package hadley ever wrote; the rest is more about reinventing the wheel and viral-marketing with hex-stickers than about getting work done. the newer stuff in particular is atrocious; heaven forfend function calls that don't require understanding the lore of a package (`recipes` has stupid functions like `recipe`, `bake` and similar nonsense).

at a push, base + data.table + ggplot2 get everything done. tinyverse ftw.

meanmrmustard92··on Show HN: Matrix rain, Conway's Game of Life and Mandelbrot set for terminals
This is fantastic. What arguments should I pass ./cxxmatrix to get the mandelbrot set or game of life? Can't seem to get it to work / couldn't figure it out from the repo.
meanmrmustard92··on Why I use R
Agreed. Recent updates to rlang have made programming dplyr/ggplot2 functions a bit better, but it still feels super clunky. I use data.table for most things for programmability and speed reasons.

As much as I like ggplot2, I find the rest of the tidyverse to be solving problems it invents (e.g. quosures to fix the problem of not permitting string arguments for dplyr verbs) and monopolising an open source ecosystem.

meanmrmustard92··on LaTeX, Instantly: Extract LaTeX from PDFs or Handwritten Notes
They recently implemented a pretty restrictive freemium subscription model that has tempered my enthusiasm for it massively. 50 snips a month is nothing for grad students.
meanmrmustard92··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas from another Nepali on the other side of the world (Bay Area) and missing home.
meanmrmustard92··on Neuron, a new VS Code extension for data science
looks similar to Hydrogen for Atom. I'd recommend that (since it is actively maintained) too
meanmrmustard92··on Ask HN: What are the best textbooks in your field of expertise?
Thanks; been meaning to. I've not seen a good exposition of what benefit the DAG way of doing Causal Inference has over the Potential Outcomes Framework. Morgan and Winship (another good textbook) tries, but I didn't really buy it. I guess I have to hear it from the horse's mouth.
meanmrmustard92··on Ask HN: What are the best textbooks in your field of expertise?
In econometrics / empirical social science:

- Mostly Harmless Econometrics by Joshua Angrist and Jorn Steffan Piscke

- Causal Inference for Statistics, Social, and Biomedical Sciences by Guido Imbens and Donald Rubin

- Data Analysis using Regression and Multilevel Models by Andrew Gelman and Jennifer Hill

meanmrmustard92··on Smelvetica – Helvetica the way it was intended to be
kill it with fire.
meanmrmustard92··on Write – A word processor for handwriting
There's an application on the windows store called Nebo that does writing and write recognition and claims to do drawing recognition too (although I rarely use it; I wanted to use it for math but that is extremely dodgy so far; not sure why because detextify would give it ample training data).
