me_im_counting··on Divorce does funny things
It’s interesting how my comment seems to be taken as an assertion in the opposite direction: that women have it categorically worse in divorce. I believe that reality is much, much more nuanced than either “direction”.

That being said, who files is not a perfect signal. I know a few women who filed when it was in reality the husband who ended the marriage.

I actually am quite sympathetic to challenges facing men, and agree that many don’t seem to care. For example, the utter lack of sympathy for male victims of marital infidelity is mind blowing to me. Women tend to be supported when their husband cheats on them, and men tend to be blamed and viewed as responsible when their wife cheats. I was simply pointing out observations counter to the assertion that men categorically have it worse in divorce, and did not come to a conclusion in either direction. There is too much gender based vitriol in general in these situations. The truth is there are sociopathic, selfish, narcissistic, etc people of both genders and ultimately that callous quality is the salient one in the cases I’ve seen, not gender.

Yeah, that does seem to be true, not that I have particular expertise on that. Sorry that you’ve had to experience that firsthand and I hope things get better for you. I think men and women have their unique challenge “clusters” with divorce (though they are tendencies, not the rule) and custody seems to be a rough one for men.

Are they? At least among wealthy men, it seems much more common for them to remarry and make a brand new second family while the ex wife is left doing most things for the first set of kids. Plus, it’s significantly more common for men to leave their wives when their wives get diagnosed with cancer than vice versa.

IMO, divorce sucks worst for whoever is the most conscientious person and invested in the family, regardless of gender.

PS - I am divorced too (no kids though) - sorry to hear you’re going through that.

I’m a woman, and none of my smartest friends are interested in having more than 2 children. A few aren’t interested in having any. I’m the weirdo who wants 3, but I don’t see why I should be part of someone’s experiments when I can find a high quality mate on my own anyway.
me_im_counting··on Tech sector job interviews assess anxiety, not software skills (2020)
It's not drilling on the technical side. It's drilling the experience that produces anxiety (performing it to an interviewer).

I never had test anxiety growing up and didn't really empathize with why someone would (sympathized obviously). But solving a problem in FRONT of someone as they are evaluating me (rather than a normal collaboration) triggers a panic. The only thing that helped reduce the panic is repeated drills, which take a lot of time.

If this is true, it's interesting that we didn't evolve toward a higher median intelligence.

I wonder if there will be better remote development support on vscode.dev? It used to work well for me, but in recent releases the remote functionality has gotten so flaky...
me_im_counting··on SQL for Distributed Systems
It’s interesting how much SQL, a declarative language, requires thinking about performance. In theory, declarative languages would allow the user to think less about imperative concerns like the query plan. I’ve rewritten the same SQL query and got a 1000x speed up, looks like this author has too.
me_im_counting··on Show HN: Caribou – a GitHub app to help you manage technical debt
I looked through your site, and was a bit confused. How does this help you monitor technical debt specifically? This seems like traditional engineering issue tracking but I may be missing something.
me_im_counting··on Don't write bugs
I wish the author had expanded more. It would have been great to hear about the most frequent types of bugs they logged and other mitigation strategies.
me_im_counting··on Adding Up Ride-Hailing's Hidden Environmental Costs
There seems to be a giant elephant in the room with this analysis. Where is the cost of manufacturing the extra car? 10 people can ride in the same rideshare car in one day, but they would each need their own vehicle if they didn't do that.
me_im_counting··on Understanding an Equity Offer
Liquidity preference is the oft-overlooked feature here. People commonly think that because they have 1% of the shares, they will get 1% of the sales price, and that's rarely the case. Even if the company shares with you the liquidity preference of all of their current investors, future investors may negotiate for a favorable one, sometimes making your shares basically useless.

The "Disabling Import Elision" section is interesting - I didn't realize that modules used inside string formatters would be automatically removed by the unused module remover. It just goes to show how hard it is to anticipate all of the ways a given optimization might legitimately break code.

Wondering what other languages have precedent for the changes described in "Template String Types as Discriminants".
