Who knows how long this will take with the pandemic (and I work full-time at GitHub, and most of the team has full-time jobs), so all that does slow us down. That said, this should be faster than v4's development, and with fewer and smaller breaking changes by comparison.
I wouldn't start getting into the weeds with it in any kind of production environment until the beta though honestly. Release date for stable v5 is hopefully months away.
And yes! Definitely something that you can theoretically run forever without issue. Browsers basically have to keep supporting the historical properties, quirks, etc, so once you've built it, you're largely good to go :).
We've also maintained security patches and more for v3 where appropriate well past the LTS for the web's sake. While we try to have guidelines around it, we want to help move things forward for the web :).
Lots of folks like to shit on jQuery these days, but it changed JS forever. We're still using it while focusing on other things, and you can easily swap it out for something else or use a ported version of our JS for React, Angular, etc.
In short, yes, and we'll get there in time <3.
2) Bootstrap 4 includes dozens of utilities like these and more. Still have some to add, but there are tons.
3) Our theme state is busted in the beta it will be there for final. Open to feedback!
4) v4 has cards. Spinners are slated for v4.1. Toasts are slated for v4.2 I think. Peep the project pulls page :).
5) Everyone else does amazing icons. We pulled our icon font out long ago in v4. Use any SVG library.
6) That’s a solid idea. Care to open an issue for it!? :D
Take a look at the new v4 beta docs and let me know what else is missing or cumbersome for you, please. <3
Huge thanks to the contributors and our team for pushing so hard recently. Feels amazing to have a beta out finally.
I'm late to this thread, but I don't check Hacker News often and missed the tweet from @tedmiston. The first beta is coming soon—I basically spent all weekend working on it while recovering from a cold. There's a project on our GitHub repo for tracking the outstanding todos: https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap/projects/3.
(There's also one for the second beta, too, which you'll notice is quite narrow in in focus right now :).)
I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm exhausted and haven't had time to work on open source. GitHub takes up the bulk of my time—ask my dog and my girlfriend—and I don't often have the energy to switch contexts. I'm working on that though. Suffice to say that yes, we'll have a release soon.
Also, I do still plan on going back to Bootstrap 3 and shipping some updates there. That version took so much of my time and we iterated on it quite heavily. It's super stable still.
Hope that helps!
