I am what I am, and that's all I am
submissionscomments
mdlxxv··on Why Adults Are Playing with Toys
"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up" (C.S. Lewis)
mdlxxv··on Ask HN: Is strong anti-AI sentiment psyops
Is strong "AI" fanboyism a "psyops"?
mdlxxv··on The way we talk to bots matters even if they aren't conscious
But that's not "talking". That's sending commands to a program and then getting the program's output. The truly mentally damaging thing is thinking something like that is "talking" to "someone". I don't need to be "polite" to a glorified REPL. I'm not going to "insult" it either, of course. The whole thing is absurd. It's a computer program.
mdlxxv··on Transformers Won't End the Human Race Lol
The autobots won't, but the decepticons might try.
mdlxxv··on Longtime SUSE staff asked if they'd opt for 'voluntary separation'
Another funny euphemism for the collection.
mdlxxv··on Ask HN: What do you expect from the next 5 years of AI?
It will tell lies more convincingly.
mdlxxv··on Winamp will be reborn in 2027 to take on streaming
> Winamp will be reborn as a completely new player with its own premium subscription service

This does not whip the llama's ass.

mdlxxv··on KDE turns 30 and someone's brought an AI-native desktop proposal
Sorry, but a string of ones and zeroes will never "love you back".
mdlxxv··on Is the phrase "master bedroom" harmful? A new psychology study says no
My favorite part of the article:

> The only people who experienced slight increases in negative emotions when exposed to the words were those who scored high on moral elitism and a need for recognition. These specific personality traits reflect a persistent feeling of being a victim in social situations. For everyone else, the words had no measurable negative impact.

mdlxxv··on This website runs on a Raspberry Pi 4B with only 1 GB of RAM
"Only" 1 GB of RAM. Man, I'm old.
mdlxxv··on Is "Clanker" Considered a Slur?
Is "luddite" considered a slur? Clankerphiles use that term a lot.
mdlxxv··on How fast can you type on T9?
Man, I miss mainstream phones with real, physical buttons so much.
mdlxxv··on Escaping Containment
> I am seeing huge leaps forward in AI intelligence as new releases come out.

With all due respect, nowhere near as huge as the leap you made in the two final paragraphs.

mdlxxv··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
I, for one, welcome our new file-sharing overlords.
mdlxxv··on Imperial Colors Manifesto
I can use 16,777,216 possible colors, and you want me to limit myself to a mere 140? Also, that Imperial/Metric analogy will probably only sound sympathetic in the USA, and rather backwards in the rest of the world. Unless that whole website is actually satire, that is :)
mdlxxv··on X Corp blocks social media startup from using 'Twitter' name
Just like the proverbial dog in the manger.
mdlxxv··on Ask HN: Can we classify AI as: subhuman, quasihuman, human, superhumam?
Nonhuman
mdlxxv··on The opportunity to talk to another human should be a basic human right
On the other hand, what I want is the right to not being forced to talk to another human if I don't want to.
mdlxxv··on Tildes Is Dead
Editorialize much?
mdlxxv··on Chromium, Chrome, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi: Multiple Vulnerabilities
Chromium 138.0.7204.92 is dated June 27, 2025. Are there really any Gentoo users still running a browser older than that?
mdlxxv··on 20 Years Later: Pluto Is Still a Planet, and the IAU Is Still Wrong
It's always Pluto, Pluto, Pluto. No one ever cares about poor Ceres.
mdlxxv··on Why Garfield Phones Are Washing Up on a French Beach Since the '80s
That large header picture is 100% "I'm Sorry Jon" material.
mdlxxv··on Early 2000s were peak of humanity
Ah, yes. 9/11. The "war on terror". "Peak of humanity", indeed.
mdlxxv··on You Don't Know Why Internet Cookies Are Called Cookies [video]
Because they are delicious delicacies, of course!
mdlxxv··on Replace "using AI" with "using computers"
Remember the "Cloud to Butt" browser extension? Now we need an extension that replaces all instances of the word "AI" with "my butt".
mdlxxv··on A century after Goscinny, Asterix remains a witty guide to resisting authority
The real, authentic Astérix comic died with Goscinny. Everything after "Astérix in Belgium" is non-canon to me.
mdlxxv··on ShieldFont: Bludgeoning AI Scrapers That Disrespect Robots.txt
Also bludgeoning human visitors using accesibility tools and/or text-based web browsers.
mdlxxv··on LLMs and Xfwl4
TL;DR:

I’m not comfortable with it, but the utility is just too great for me to take a principled stance here. I like it, and I want it, so I’m using it. Maybe that’s morally questionable, or worse. But, as I said: here I am.
Sigh. I was so looking forward to finally being able to use Xfce in Wayland. Not anymore. Not at that price.
mdlxxv··on Wikipedia article "Ship of Theseus" has changed entirely since its inception
It's a self-demostrating article, then!
mdlxxv··on Whimsical DMG screens are a dying art
In general, whimsical stuff has been disappearing from software everywhere. 22 years later, I still mourn the demise of the "Cookies are delicious delicacies" message from Firefox's options menu. This might be a gross exaggeration on my part, but I genuinely believe that the long decline of Firefox as a browser started the day those words were removed. For me, that marked the moment when "the suits" started taking over.
