I thought at first that you were talking about Disney Streaming / Hulu
I think you are right, but only under assumptions that the market for talent is liquid (ei it's relatively easy to hire).
Counter example: What if you are running an AI company that is trying to solve self-driving and top 3-4 researchers quit? I'd argue that you don't really have a company at that point.
def interesting to learn about industries that I'm not in. thanks for sharing
turns out I was wrong!
at least in the US you need an undergrad in a technical discipline + law degree
Yes! so frustrating! this is the reason why I left SF Bay Area circa 2016. No one wanted to talk about what I wanted to do next and my prof interests. Only about past experience and existing skills that I could immediately contribute.
I started my career as a fullstack dev doing crud at startups. Eventually I got interested in FP and learned Haskell in my free time. Then little bit of Scala. After I got laid off from a startup, I knew that FP and/or large scale systems was what I wanted to work on next and wasn't willing to compromise.
Eventually a F500 company with an office in Portland OR agreed to hire me as a contractor because they were looking for strong FPers to program in Scala and local programmer market was almost non-existent.
That's how I pivoted to working on distributed systems and products with millions of users, and never looked back.
Generalized advice: learn a skill with a high barrier to entry that is also in demand.
claims that housing being valuable leads to "bad incentives", bigger inequality, and overall poorer society aren't obviously true to me.
My MB letters tentatively are INTJ. I say tentatively because I took a couple of free online tests. Those might not be very accurate. Knowing those letters never aided me in anything. The only interesting that has come out of it is that I discovered a weird subculture of people who wish their MB letter were exactly those. Some kind of a weird obsession.
Big 5 - I took Jordan Peterson's paid test. Discovering that I was more disagreeable and more open to ideas than roughly 90% of population was helpful with self awareness and managing expectations when dealing with others. For example, I don't expect most of my colleagues to be as critical of the company leadership or company policies as I am. And I fully expect some of my colleagues to shut down my ideas for deviating too much from existing patterns.
Knowing my MB category was amusing but not useful.
Knowing my Big 5 percentiles - very useful. Understanding where I land on disagreeableness and openness to ideas made my life a lot easier (both at home and work). At least because I have a framework to understand personality differences when dealing with teammates and what frustrates me (like people being close-minded or indecisive, or both).
My current company doesn't do it, but I would support mixing and matching people with complementary strengths. Like match someone with high openness to ideas to explore various angles on a particular problem and someone with high conscientiousness to get the project across the finish line.
I'm so glad geohot is back to streaming. I was afraid he had left for good because of trolls.
George, if you reading this: 1) we cannot let trolls win; 2) I'm still waiting for the Cherry computer
all detail is different: shape of body, shape of ears, position of eyes, shape of legs, proportions
actually, just yesterday I learned about a website for exploring eviction data: https://evictionlab.org/
How much money people have on hand in aggregate and how much of it they ready to pay for rent matters!
People on the supply side always adjust their prices to maximize profits (price * quantity). Prices are climbing because some tenants agree to pay.
my prediction is that, as a result, people will start assuming pics online are fake until proven otherwise.
BigTech, non-tech BigCo, mid-sized non-tech?
I cannot see how a manager/director at a BigCo would be able approve something like this since everything is standardized (like base pay at each level)
I care about only the biggest most influential events and try to filter as much noise as possible. Just think about what news you can remember and if they had effect on you from 4-5 months ago. My guess is about zero.
Stories about volcano eruptions, wars, record-high inflation, and presidential elections outcomes make it into memes.
Sounds like you are more interested in your work than whatever you do on your vacations. That's fine. It happens.
I mute company chat app when I go on PTO and tell teammates to call me if there is an emergency. They have my number.
Sometimes you don't know what you don't know.
But yeah, these days I rely on the debugger heavily. Even for Python :)
Otherwise, if you are comfortable with quitting before securing the next thing for yourself, just do it if you think it will help one of your reports. At least it will help you clear your conscious.
