mckoss··on Auditor's response to "Our security auditor is an idiot" (Update 3)
I might suggest that the password pattern strings are encrypted using a key based on the user's password plus salt. This way, the password pattern list is only recoverable AFTER recovering the users password (via brute force). I think this solves the reduced search space problem of your scheme.
mckoss··on Charting the American Debt Crisis
Excellent visual. I've not seen this explained as clearly in any other news source. It seems so simple to do; I chalk it up the kind of lazy Journalism we have today.

mckoss··on Google Bans Adwords use for Facebook
I remember hearing that Google is making well over 50% of all Internet Advertising revenue in the US.
mckoss··on Google Bans Adwords use for Facebook
Facebook did the same thing to me when I tried to advertise my social networking service on Facebook. This is anti-competitive - on both counts. But it's illegal if you are deemed to have monopoly power.
mckoss··on When Patents Attack
I think a better solution is a mandatory licensing process. The threat of absolute exclusion is too damaging to the industry.

AND, the patent office needs to start DOING THEIR JOB and stop granting patents for obvious inventions.

mckoss··on Bitcoin befuddles US customs agents, thwarting visit by digital currency guru
The Visa Waiver program allows "business" travel to the US. I think Nefario's planned activities are allowed:

"Independent research, no salary/income from a US based source, or benefit to US institution."

mckoss··on Bitcoin befuddles US customs agents, thwarting visit by digital currency guru
I had cash in my office ready to exchange for Bitcoin when Nefario was to come to Seattle. It's no different than trading at MtGox.
mckoss··on Does a Cop Have a Right to Your Smartphone?
Anyone have a link to the video they were referring to in the clip?
mckoss··on HTML5 Snake
That's fun! It runs pretty fast, though. You might want to have it start a bit slower.

You should also use requestAnimationFrame instead of setInterval.

mckoss··on How does Google pay 2.4%?
The highest marginal federal tax rate for corporations is 35%. I think that's too high. But Google, a US Corporation, who derives most of it's earnings from it's US operations, is paying but a small fraction of that.

I think in the case of Google, they should at least be paying higher tax rates on all advertising earnings from US users; it seems to me they are maying barely 1 tenth of that amount currently.

Just as "selective enforcement" of laws leads to corruption, so too does gaming the tax system. Large corporations pay legislators to create these tax loopholes for them.

mckoss··on How does Google pay 2.4%?
Our congressional representatives are corrupt, doling out tax breaks to wealthy corporations, while ordinary people are left to pay high tax rates on ordinary income. I think Google should be ashamed to be part of this corrupt system.

It's BS to say that they owe it to their shareholders to try to defraud the federal government of as much tax revenue as possible. They should instead be fighting for corporate tax reform and closing loopholes to make a level playing field and not rewarding "scumbag" corporations.

mckoss··on The Conclusion: A 6 Figure Business That Fell Apart When I Was 16
You have to have a design patent to protect the "shape" of a product. They look a little like iPod nanos, but can Apple really protect ANY small rectangular metal music player?
mckoss··on [dead]
I've seen quite a few of these "part 1" articles on HN lately. I find it annoying and would down vote this listing if I could. This story is a good start, but not complete, and therefore was a waste of my time.
mckoss··on DOJ: We can force you to decrypt that laptop
The DOJ claims that allowing defendants to exercise their 5th amendment rights against self-incrimination would "make their prosecution impossible."

To which I say:

1. Your prosecutors are lazy and want to force criminals to prosecute themselves.

2. If the only external evidence of a crime is a private file on a hard drive, it seems to me that not much harm was done to society and we should leave these people alone.

mckoss··on Jeopardy Kids answer: 404
I don't think the inventor of the HTTP protocol would have envisioned that one of his error codes would be the answer on an Jeopardy (Kids!) game ... AND correctly answered by a 12 year old!
mckoss··on We Spent $1,138 on Facebook in 6 Days: Numbers and Lessons Learned
It isn't clear to me that the users clicking the most popular version of their ad were not more interested in beer than in their product.
mckoss··on AOL Exposed: A Former AOL Employee Speaks Out
Why are advertisers paying $9 to $20 CPM to AOL when they generally pay a tiny fraction of that to advertise across most web sites and on Google?

mckoss··on Soyuz User Manual
The chart on page 3-2 gives you a good idea of the G forces you'd experience on a launch. Imagine the feeling of instantly taking away 3.5 Gs as each stage blows away. Also notice how the Gs increase as the mass of fuel volume is reduced during stage firing.
mckoss··on Middle East Turmoil - WSJ Interactive Info-Graphic
I this to be a surprisingly good use of interactive design (one not possible with a static newspaper). Note that you can slice by geo or by time.

mckoss··on Serving small static files: which server to use?
Off topic, but WordPress has made blogs unreadable for iPad users. I can't even scroll through this article without the screen jumping erratically past many pages of content.
mckoss··on "My current theory is that programming is quite literally writing."
I think the point that OP is trying to make is about skill acquisition. He argues you can't learn to program well merely by learning programming concepts. Rather, you must immerse yourself in reading and writing real programs.
mckoss··on Scrollability
Given that momentum based mouse scrolling existed in the prior art, I doubt that the addition of touch would pass the non-obviousness test in court.

mckoss··on Stop writing milliseconds and hating JavaScript's setTimeout & setInterval
Each use of a non standard library makes code less "portable" - both in the sense that you need to include another library to support it, and in that it will be a speed bump to other developers reading and using your code.

So I generally have a non trivial minimum bar for using a library in my code - it has to do more than just a little syntactic sugar.

mckoss··on The Rise of "Logical Punctuation".
Simpler, but with a changed meaning. The original speaker does not want to be read to from the book; he does not contemplate reading it to himself.
