> The Power Mac 9500 could take up to 1.5 gigs of memory in 1995.

> It's a shame that no computers really distinguish themselves like that any more, aside from high end server systems.

Well, intel mac pro from 2019 could take up to 1.5TB of ram while I would guess standard back then for PCs was 16-32GB at most. So should be comparable (1.5GB vs 16-32MB of ram in 1995)?

mciancia··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
Damn, I don't think this is considered competitive in Poland, and that's even before taking taxes and CoL under account
mciancia··on How Home Assistant is being used to protect from missile and drone attacks
A ton more sanctions, becoming less dependand on russian oil and gas, killing nordstream. But in 2014, not 2022. Probably would have helped
mciancia··on Jim Simons has died
Right, because spacex, starlink, tesla and neuralink don't exist. All he does is shitposting
mciancia··on Tuxedo Computers
Are those another Clevo OEMs with custom sticker or something custom?
mciancia··on SSDs have become fast, except in the cloud
I like using scaleway for personal projects, but they are available only in Europe
mciancia··on Ethernet: The Basics
You can just get 2.5GbE USB dongle (which are pretty cheap) and use pretty much any usb-c/3.0/thunderbolt dock :)

But there is no paid egress when we are moving data between account within one region, rigth?
mciancia··on Vision Pro teardown part 2: What’s the display resolution?
So, given their comparison with iphone/65 inch TV we would need 10k PPI to get similar PPD.

I wonder if that's possible with todays technology

Edit: Seems like there are some news from last few years about samsung having 10k PPI displays

mciancia··on Netflix is different now – and there's no going back
Isn't that something that you already can do in Prime, Apple TV and google movies?

mciancia··on Power over fiber
Crazy that it has been 20 years since 10G was available and it's still very uncommon outside of enterprise
mciancia··on Show HN: I made a GPU VRAM calculator for transformer-based models
Used 3090 are going for ~600usd these days (at least in Europe) thanks to crypto mining crash - building a workstation with 2 of these is fairly easy for 48GB of vram, with 4 a bit more tricky but still doable and affordable IMO
mciancia··on How thermal management is changing in the age of the kilowatt chip
200A*240V is 48kW ;)

Also, in Europe 3 phase power afair is fairly common.

mciancia··on My cat water fountain comes with a spicy USB power adapter
That might be within some quickcharge specs and it won't output 9v by default
mciancia··on Polish trains lock up when serviced in third-party workshops
tldr hackers are from DragonSector (one of the top CTF teams) - https://dragonsector.pl/

They were contacted by workshop which was doing maintenance of those trains and had no idea why they stopped working

mciancia··on Starship will attempt a launch this Friday
So, if not $2k then how much more?

How much is this monthly premium? We are talking about 50USD, 500USD, more?

You say out of pocket is in thousands per year - so I assume <10k?

I wonder what is upper bound of yearly cost for having same or better level of healthcare as in Europe.

If that's like 15k a year, than I would assume, at least for SWEs, it still makes a lot of sense to go to US - pay difference is huge. I would not be surprised that even you you would count 50k a year for medical it could still make a lot of sense to move to US if you are good - I don't hear that much about 300k, 400k or more TC per year in EU

mciancia··on Gnome Receives €1M from German Government
Lol, SWEs and execs can earn more than 100k Eur in Poland (not every company though). Is Germany that far behind?
mciancia··on 8GB vs. 16GB M3 Mac
I just send back a brand new ThinkPad with 64GB of ram to replace it with M1 Macbook pro with 32GB.

Night and day, Thinkpad was a joke with thermals, noise and battery life.

No thank you

mciancia··on A simple guide to fine-tuning Llama 2
Well it's quite possible that it is useless for you since you didn't hear about llama by now ;)
mciancia··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Interesting, in terms of resolution:

PS VR2: 2000 × 2040, so ~4Mpix per eye

Quest pro: 1800 x 1920 pixels per eye, so ~3.5Mpx per eye

Vision pro: "The custom micro‑OLED display system features 23 million pixels" So 11.5Mpix per eye, assuming similar aspect ratio (1:1) resolution ~3400x3400

Probably there is more then resolution to this, but still, seems impressive

mciancia··on Amazon warns employees not to share confidential information with ChatGPT
Not "is used as training data" but more like can be used.

That also means that they can use your interactions with GPT to see what they can improve, but still do the learning on other datasets

mciancia··on Amazon warns employees not to share confidential information with ChatGPT
Maybe it picked up something that was leaked before and was included in this pre-2021 training dataset.

Or it's other way around and someone from within Amazon was highly inspired by something that was open on the web and now it is coming out ;)

Not enough details for sure under this link
