mchanson··on Yes, I was hacked. Hard.
Not having any backup is, for a technically capable user, indefensible.
mchanson··on Penny Arcade Sells Out
There are many listener supported radio stations in single markets. e.g. WBUR, WGBH, and WBAI in Boston.
mchanson··on ACLU launches phone app to help motorists secretly record police stops
Amazing cases. Hope little brother continues to root out police abuse of citizens.
mchanson··on Windows 8 Pro Upgrade to cost $39.99
Less a competive thing. More a looking at what Apple is doing and why and then taking what they think will work better. Validates Apple's approach.

Did MS ever make much money on upgrades?

mchanson··on I Just Gave Up $4000 Per Month to Keep My Freedom of Speech
Nope. Credit score is about the ability to repay in the US. Parent doesn't know what he is talking about.

However credit cart companies do like you better if you are the type to 'slip up', mortgage lenders not so much.

mchanson··on The Used TV Price Is Too Damn High
You should get one from Craig's list.
mchanson··on Build the "USS Enterprise" in 20 years, for 1 trillion USD
The public was not that excited about space in the 60s either.

mchanson··on Dan Benjamin: Regarding The Talk Show
Dan seems conflicted over how it went down, but I'm left feeling this statement shows he is quite angry with John and begrudges how John handled things (no last show and re-using the show name). I disagree this is a 'classy' statement (because of the criticism of his ex-co-host).

I think its trying to be a straightforward telling of Dan's perspective without him being too emotional. I think its pretty good for that. Would love for all parties to to be as open and honest as they can as it will make for compelling radio!

Disclosure: I'm a $5 a month subscriber to 5by5, a Gruber fan, and a big fan of Let's Make Mistakes (and Mike in general).

mchanson··on A Dad’s Plea To Developers Of iPad Apps For Children
Apple could make this much more obvious than it is. Would be a good improvement to the app store.
mchanson··on StackOverflow
I think since the data is open if SO goes of the rails in the future someone can take the data and relaunch a new site and compete.
mchanson··on Female Passengers Say They Were Targeted for TSA Body Scanners
I always opt out. I fly ~6 times a year (so twelve trips through security). Different airports are different. SFO is the worst I have dealt with. I get questioned by that security gate about why I am opting out in an agressive manner.

My real reason of opting out is to slow down the whole operation more than health concerns. Sometimes the pat downs are actually relaxing (like some sort of strange spa treatment). Sometimes they are rough when going up the leg until they meet resistance...but most of the time they are gentle.

mchanson··on Hacking the Used Car Purchase
Both times I've done this I just left my locked car at their place while I took their car to get checked out. It was no big deal. Set up an appointment with them and an appointment with the mechanic so everyone is ready to go!
mchanson··on Is My MacBook Pro Always Listening?
This article is without merit. The author's logic train derails shortly after leaving the station.

Without removing the hardware there is no way to prevent someone with remote root access from recording audio from any input regardless of settings. This is true of any machine that has audio inputs and drivers loaded for those devices.

mchanson··on Google Fires Back at Twitter: You Took Yourself Out of Search
So hard to give up gmail habit though...
mchanson··on Fixing holes in EC2 reliability
This is the most important lesson here. I've heard too many stories that end badly and I've learned this the hard way myself.
mchanson··on Merchant Says Amazon Sabotaged Its Business
It seems like Amazon acts as a bully more often than not. Reminds of the Frontline about Walmart.
mchanson··on VW deactivates employee email outside working hours
Union knowledge workers. Outside of healthcare do they exist in the US?
mchanson··on Jon Stewart skewers Freemium iOS Games [video]
The underlying point of the piece from the daily show remains intact. That these applications are designed is a predictory way.
mchanson··on HP to Contribute webOS to Open Source
I'm really interested to see if this means WebOS would compete with Android in a meaningful way. Google puts a lot of work into outreach/support/evangelism to handset makers and I think also carriers. Android's big because of being open, but also because of all of the efforts Google is making. HP is not really known for being reliable lately in their strategic direction... My prediction (for all that is worth) is that this doesn't change the landscape very much.

Totally interesting. Can't wait to see what happens.

mchanson··on Motorola wins patent suit against Apple in Germany, iPhone/iPad to be banned
I wonder what the "tax" on products I buy from Apple or Google's partners are by all these shenagens are. Do I pay $.10, $1, $10 of my iPad 2 price to help fund all this nonsense?
mchanson··on What Eric Schmidt actually said
Painting with a big of a broad brush I think.

A misquote getting corrected in less than a day and getting noticed by a news site which is frequented by the folks who would have seen the original misquote seems pretty good to me.

IMHO I love the current state of tech press (of which Hacker New's is a big part of for my consumption). I feel its much better than it was 10 years ago.

mchanson··on Regretsy Issue Resolution
This is sorta consumerist.com's model.
mchanson··on Fliers Must Turn Off Devices, but It’s Not Clear Why
How come I can watch tv during this whole time if this is the reason?
mchanson··on Swearing
Lame dogma. Let the guy have his own voice.
mchanson··on Female FOSS dev quits tech industry due to harassment
I don't know, but in the US don't a lot of states have stalking laws that would cover this kind of behavior.

I see this site has info by state. Dunno if this kind of thing exists in Australia...

mchanson··on Perl tutorials suck (and cause serious damage)
I think there are two very different sides to perl culture. About ten years ago I worked on a OO Perl project which was ~10k lines. It had coding standards, test suites, documentation, and was easy to maintain and bring new engineers into.

The other side is hacked together scripts. Which have their place, but are often a mess.

mchanson··on The Economics of Bike Lanes
In Cambridge, MA the police have been enforcing traffic laws with bikers. Dunno what effect it has had, but enforcement, IMHO, as a place in getting bikers to obey the traffic laws.

Drivers, on the whole, behave pretty badly too. As a driver, biker, and pedestrian in the Boston area I don't think I would say any of those groups act better than others.

Would love separated bike lanes. Biking in the city is very satisfying, but also nerve racking for me.

mchanson··on Quicksilver Roars (new features, Lion support)
It went through a bad patch a few years ago. For more than a year now it has been rock solid for me.
mchanson··on Quicksilver Roars (new features, Lion support)
Here is open source software with a great UI and because of being open source had a resurgence. What a great story and a great piece of software.
mchanson··on Introducing Instapaper 4.0 for iPad and iPhone
Marco's show is still very young. Making it short or more focused wouldn't allow it to develop as quickly (the man needs more hours not less). I still very much enjoy the show and think Marco is more free than he used to be and more enjoyable as a result. I think Marco's value or not an a good talk radio host is not in the more focused show.

Hypercritical is a more focused and is a great show in its own right.

As Dan would say "Sorry to lose you as a listener".

You may be being down-voted because of hyperbole rather than disagreement...
