mchanson··on Defeated
Hey buddy, I opt out too all the time. It once did not work out for me also. Don't worry about be a hypocrite or being an absolutist. You are still sending a message and slowing the stupid operation down by opting out 99% of the time. Chin up! Live to opt out next time.

BTW I quite enjoy the passive aggressive questions. If they ask if I know the machine is safe I always agree with them that the machine is safe. They find that amusing in SFO and annoying in BOS. I don't fly through LAX so they might be more annoying there.

I find that most of the time the TSA people, if you treat them with a bit of a sense of humor, are usually pretty nice about the whole opt out thing (though they do do the passive agressive stuff). However I'm white middle aged guy with a wedding ring. So perhaps I get, by far, the easiest side of TSA 'attitude'.

mchanson··on Don't Fly During Ramadan
I've set off the machine in question before. I am a american male mid thirties swedish/english/german (and look it). The person assumed the machine was wrong and spent a bit of extra time with me and sent me on my way. This was in 2010.

I do not recall if it was during Ramadan.

mchanson··on The De-evolution of My Laptop Battery
Although battery health and maintenance is interesting I have never bothered to nurse or baby my batteries on my equipment. If the battery gets to be too short lived its time to replace it.
mchanson··on Terms of Service; Didn't Read
No need to 'prove' it. Just need to make a case it is more likely than not (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_burden_of_proof#Preponde...)

In the US over 90% of mortgages are fixed rate (http://www.newyorkfed.org/research/current_issues/ci16-8.pdf)
mchanson··on Ask HN: Outsource IT or in-house IT?
Yeah. That is similar to my 3rd thought and very similar to one of the programmer's thoughts. Makes a lot of sense since it would be hard to find the person who wanted to do the day in and day out 'fix the printer' stuff and also have the skills for the more high end stuff.
mchanson··on Ask HN: Outsource IT or in-house IT?
Colo is for customer facing systems (we sell software as a service). In house is for helping run the factory and staging / dev systems version of colo systems.
mchanson··on Ask HN: Outsource IT or in-house IT?
1. Very Fast, usually less than 15 minutes (less than 5 to an emergency) during the day. And within 10 or so minutes for an escalation (from monitoring or person) 24/7.

2. Two server stacks (co-location and in house). ~ 8 or so physical servers each place. Workstations are about 50 with most being very simple machines in the manufacturing area.

3. It was a flat fee. My guess is it was ~

Cause, like, I still use Visicalc and it works great.

Who was still using 'Right click and save as'?

mchanson··on Why New Relic Is Raising $80 Million Now
They sent me, a customer, an email announcing the funding. Congrats to them, but why are you emailing me...
mchanson··on What to do when a customer says “Fuck you”
This company seems thin skinned. I agree its best not allow abusive relationships with customer fester. However I don't agree that you should react to a customer blowing off steam the same way as a customer that is serially abusive.
mchanson··on Aaron Swartz & A Culture of Denial: Depression & Suicide in Tech
In my experience at the companies I've worked at in the northeast people tend to talk about their struggles with mental illness with work folks. I've started working at a California company the last few years and folks are pretty open there as well.

I understand this is just my experience and I like to talk about the feeling side of being human at work (and do) so I may attract this kind of discussion and folks opening up.

My aunt used to eat antifreeze and motor oil with her french fries and she lived to 103.
mchanson··on I Don't Want To Be Part of Your Ecosystem
I'm annoyed that its difficult and time consuming to move to a new house in a new city. I mean you have to hire movers, pack up all your stuff, and find a new place to live.
mchanson··on Uber Reverts Back to Surge Pricing in New York After One Day
It seems to me that humans, as a group, act compassionately during crisis. So compassion, or good marketing if you are a cold blooded corp. type, is a good reason to truck more in. FEMA can also, I'm sure, force a commercial concern to do it. They have lots of that scary tinfoil hat power.

Many comments in here seem to look at this problem so coldly and rationally. Anti-gouging has a deep moral component. If some of us are not trying to get one over on others of us then you can maintain a stronger community during a crisis.

If Bob's gas starts charging $15 for a gallon of gas in a crisis it will cause friction in the community between those who can afford vs. those you cannot and with the employees and owner of the gauging station.

We have also, well enough of us that laws were passed, decided as a society that its just immoral/unacceptable behavior.

Capitalism is great. It doesn't need to deal with this corner condition well to be a successful system.

mchanson··on The Core Memory Module from my dad’s homebuilt PDP-11/05
I had an ST rather than Amiga. So we know I'm suspect ;). But I, when I got my 3GS iPhone, kept telling folks it was my favorite computer I ever owned. Still feel that way.
mchanson··on Android can be beautiful
This may be. However its not good for the android app ecosystem today.

I enjoy Apple products a lot. The details of this new connector look great and I'm glad to be rid of the dock connector.

However I think the $30 price tag is out of line. They only charge $10 for the magsafe 2 adapter* which is more inline with my irrational sense of 'what is resonable' on pricing. In other words I don't resent $10 for an adapter, but do resent $30.

*I recognize that there may be more components for the dock adapter vs. magsafe 2.

Its okay to criticize and be angry without any expectations that Twitter change.
mchanson··on Walking out of an interview
I've gotten feedback when I interviewed on why they did not extend an offer. Its emotionally difficult when interviewing to put yourself out there, but getting feedback does help you understand how the interview went down better.

If this ever effects the US or Europe to to great an effect I'm pretty sure WTO can help. China is not selling these sorts of products to the world yet so it's a pretty meaningless threat so far.
mchanson··on Yes, I was hacked. Hard.
Yes. I push this with extended family. Best ~$100 investment a Mac user can make. Windows 7 built in backup works fine too.
