mchahn··on A Surge in Meth Use in Colorado Complicates Opioid Recovery
And Edgar Allen Poe.
mchahn··on Elon Musk calls Thai cave rescuer a 'pedo guy'
But why "pedo"? Why not ahole or something less specific. Is there something Musk knows about the guy?
mchahn··on APL\3000 – HP Journal – July 1977 [pdf]
In the first paragraph" "..its ease of programming and debugging."

APL is one of the most unapproachable languages I every learned.

mchahn··on Reverse-Engineering WebAssembly [pdf]
> where you could open any web page, understand how it works and learn from it ?

Web browsers will/already show wasm disassembly when opened in the browser tools. A file can contain label metadata which makes it very readable.

mchahn··on Are Flat-Earthers Being Serious?
> are you saying that it's not real research unless I go to space and see for myself?

I saw it for myself on a Concorde flight. The altitude was so high the horizon was bent. Not just a little but a lot.

mchahn··on Toml: Tom's Obvious, Minimal Language
Should it be called a "language" when it has grammar but no semantics? (just curious)
mchahn··on The Battle Agaist Any Raid Five initiative (2016)
> we’ll arrange various BAARF Party Conventions where we’ll proudly display our logo, which says “I’m NOT talking anymore about RAID-5.

Hilarious.

mchahn··on White Gold (2015)
Why isn't something so valuable farmed? I have seen great mushroom farms in abandoned tunnels in Pennsylvania.

P.S. Great photos.

mchahn··on State of Mutation Testing at Google (2017)
> ..but how different is this from ... fuzz testing

Very short answer. Fuzzing changes run-time input and mutation is changing the code.

mchahn··on What Is a Blazar? It’s Like Staring Down the Barrel of a Black Hole
So it emits particles at near-light-speeds aimed towards us. Some questions (possibly stupid).

Are they still at near-light-speed when the get to us?

How can you detect something going so fast? Aren't there weird relativistic behaviors?

mchahn··on George Hotz is on a hacker crusade against the ‘scam’ of self-driving cars
Well, usually driving over one with rubber tires causes no problem. One in the air would be detectable, no?
mchahn··on Why no Easter Eggs? (2005)
I worked with the creator of the first easter egg, David Ramsey. In the early 80's he added a "Zebra Lady" to Mac Paint. It made a lot of press when it was discovered.
mchahn··on McDonald's Says Goodbye Cashiers, Hello Kiosks
At our local McDonald's there are 9 kiosks and yet no one is ever at one. The lines at the human cashiers are as long as ever.
mchahn··on McDonald's Says Goodbye Cashiers, Hello Kiosks
> I order items without cheese,

The kiosk app makes you go through a screen to customize items. The first time I wanted to order a hamburger I was stuck because there were only cheeseburgers. Later a screen offered the option of removing the cheese.

mchahn··on Amazon Homepage is Down
Ditto. Github goes out of their way to not show you a home page. If your cookies are logged in then going to github.com takes you directly to your personal page.
mchahn··on Ex-Tesla worker escalates battle by blowing whistle to SEC
> Is Tesla running an undercover salvage operation, to identify reusable components and reduce waste from their "totaled" cars?

The economics of the situation would say no. The number of "totaled" teslas is a tiny fraction of the number they are producing.

mchahn··on Amazon Homepage is Down
FWIW: I wouldn't notice since my bookmark goes directly to my orders page. I never see the home page. I also never see the home page of google or github.
mchahn··on Designing a Quantum Computing Board Game
> we actually implemented a simulator for the game and AI players who could play it together.

Wow. If they got tired of quantum they could go into AI. AI good enough to simulate how hard a game is, is impressive.

mchahn··on Bizarre Glasses Promise to Cure Motion Sickness
That they could be a placebo was an after-thought. I should have known. Placebos are especially effective when the problem is worrying about something that probably won't happen.
mchahn··on PCB Placement Stencils
No need to compare. Go to easyeda.com. You can get 10 boards for $2 (!). I have gotten a dozen or so sets of boards and they have gotten here in less than a week. (Not affiliated, yadda yadda yadda).
mchahn··on Bizarre Glasses Promise to Cure Motion Sickness
At least this will work better than the copper bracelets tons of people wear on cruises. I couldn't convince my daughters they were b.s. But maybe I shouldn't interfere with the placebo effect.

Speaking of placebos, I wonder how these glasses compare to placebos.

mchahn··on Git Is Not Revision Control (2017)
> Data is not permanent

A blockchain is getting close to permanent. I wonder if there is a blockchain-based version control.

mchahn··on Google doesn't like -2 * 2
I don't know how long google has offered the calculator but I discovered it recently. I now use it daily. Awesome.
mchahn··on Functional Reactive Programming
I can't answer this without knowing your definition of reactive.

To me, dataflow is simply a stream of data triggering calculations even if the data is unchanged. e.g. the stream of 1,2,2,3 would cause four calculations.

Reactive means that only 1,2,3 would appear to the calculations. In other word only changes are reacted to.

My framework is reactive by these definitions.

mchahn··on TclWise: Guide to the Tcl programming language (2004)
Hmmm. Can any language manual be a HN post? Maybe I could get some points by posting 10 or 20.
mchahn··on The Electric Flight of Spiders
I didn't know there was an electrical variation in altitude.
mchahn··on Equivalence principle of general relativity holds even at gravitational extremes
Although that news is actually five years old. I guess in some time-frames that could be considered new.
mchahn··on Why I Don't Love Gödel, Escher, Bach
So now I have to get it out and read it a fourth (fifth?) time. I don't really have the time but I have to.
mchahn··on Reasons You Should Put the Mouse on the Left If You’re Right-Handed
> When using a mouse you constantly have to slide your arm around within an imaginary square on the desk surface

I use a trackball, a highly underrated input device.

mchahn··on Reasons You Should Put the Mouse on the Left If You’re Right-Handed
I live with a 3D joystick in my left hand and trackball in my right hand. Obviously I do this for 3D cad work. My arms barely move. I go out of my way to avoid the keyboard, even to the point of using the "mouse" for cutting and pasting.
