This is a common misconception around the definition of legal tender.

A shop is perfectly within their rights to refuse to sell you something if you are not willing to use their accepted payment methods.

Legal tender simply means they can't sue you if you offer to settle their debt using a legal tender currency. If they have refused to sell you the item, there is no debt, therefore no obligation to accept any particular instrument

I use hledger-flow [1]. It's an opinionated way of importing csvs into the hledger format. Works really well for me, just export the csvs, write a mapping and you are good to go.

It supports preprocessing the csvs if you need to clean the data or compute some new fields which is really powerful. Once you are up and running it only needs some minor updates each month to map unidentifiable transactions I can do this in under an hour these days.

London is right after South Africa at the vanguard of Omicron. It seems it's hospitalisation rates are only now starting to emerge.

mcgin··on Launch HN: Enombic (YC S20) – Create your own stock indexes
Nice idea, having worked in a similar problem space for a number of years, I have some questions.

- How are you managing rebalancing, what might trigger a rebalance and how do you manage the tax implications of that?

- With a rebalance/deposit/withdrawal are you always a taker in the market?

- What's the custody side of this look like? i.e where do the stocks sit, are they in my brokerage account or are you custodian.

- How are you accounting for dividends in the portfolios do they get reinvested/included in returns?

- Can you manage all types of corporate action like splits, mergers, delisting, halts etc.?

Native Finance | London | Onsite | Software Engineer, Data Engineer

Native Finance (https://nativefinance.co.uk) is a B2B platform, building a suite of tools to help brokers source the best lenders for Commercial Real Estate projects and track CRE market activity.

We are based near Liverpool Street/Moorgate in the City. We are backed by Passion Capital, one of Europe’s leading venture capital funds, and a number of influential angel investors.

We are a small product-focussed team, you will be reporting directly to the CTO and working very closely with other members of the business in the Sales and Lending engagement teams.

Our immediate needs are mostly within the data processing space, however taking a more long term view we would love to find someone who is interested in working on the API as well.

Some of the things currently on the roadmap that are relevant for this role:

* Reassess the tooling for our data processing pipelines - is DBT the right tool for the job.

* Move our data pipelines to real time ingestion using streaming data.

* Improve the quality of our data ingestion/matching processes.

* Integrate additional data sources into the pipeline to increase coverage.

* Enhance the API to expose the data to the other parts of the system to support the launch of our 'Pro' Product later in the year

* Develop Machine Learning models to extract semantic information from PDFs/Images

Technology Stack

* Everything is deployed in containers to our k8s cluster in Google Cloud

* Fully reactive api build on Java 13, Spring Boot 2, Webflux + R2DBC

* Making extensive use of event sourcing

* Data pipelines built with DBT (http://getdbt.com)

* ReactJS for the frontend

mcgin··on Ask HN: Any good collaboratively built documentation on good parenting?
https://www.parentingscience.com/

"Founded by an evolutionary anthropologist, this parenting resource is for critical thinkers -- people who want to understand child development from the perspectives of psychology, anthropology, evolution, and cognitive neuroscience.

I’ve got opinions. But who cares? You might be a scientist, physician, or teacher. Maybe you're an educated, skeptical layperson who loves science. Whatever the case, you don't need a sermon. You need evidence. You can draw your own conclusions.

So here it is: No folk theories. No preachy advice. No authoritarian pronouncements or pseudoscientific political dogma. Instead, you’ll find my analysis of the research, fully-referenced so you know where to go if you want to dig deeper yourself."

mcgin··on Ask HN: Reading for first time managers
I found the writings of Samuel Colbert invaluable when I took on a management role http://www.performancepreview.com/ It was the first piece of management advice that rang true with my own personal experience.

In a similar vein I'm currently reading Frederic Laloux's Reinventing Organisations which is great although may be difficult to enact depending on your company.

Specifically around managing software engineers I would do some reading on bricolage and how to cultivate that mindset, I've found adopting it in my teams sees motivation soar. I don't have any specific reading material to point you at on that though.

mcgin··on Ask HN: How to stave off decline of HN?

mcgin··on How To Safely Store A Password
I made an attempt to implement bCrypt on the last web app I built. The problem I found with it is that there was no robust implemention of the algorithm for the tech stack I was using (J2EE) - I'm not sure whether that is the case outside of Java. jbCrypt was the only thing I could find, and if you look at the source, it really is a poor implementation. I could have gone ahead and rolled my own implementation, however I'm no security expert, and much prefer to rely on something more robustt then my own implementation which in all likelihood would have bugs in it.
