mcdevhammer··on Roadmap to becoming a web developer in 2017
Spring Boot for Java
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: What are your greatest programming stack?
Cloud Foundry + Spring Boot + Angular or React with Concourse/Docker for CI.
mcdevhammer··on Don't Give Up on the Guitar, Fender Is Begging You
Please just no. Part of the charm of the guitar is that its this kind of organic piece of wood and metal that you have to learn to master to make sound good. A lot of the different character and style of different players comes from their different technique and how they learned to play which I think would be lost if you could just easily make perfect notes by basically pressing a button. I guess this is the same reason why I prefer listening to instruments like guitar, piano (real piano, not electronic) and saxophone and synth/electronic music I find all sounds similar and lacks individual character.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: What are you using for project management?
Also use pivotal tracker. I find it much better than JIRA due to its simplicity.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: Can we train a neural network to write code?
You can use a RNN to generate code, but not for any particular purpose. It would be syntactically correct nonsense.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: Do you test your webapp's front end code? How?
Full integration tests (I.e. click a button in the UI, check that something was updated in the database) with Fluentlenium in Java and unit tests for directives/controllers/services (Angular) using Jasmine.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: How much of your time is spent in meetings?
Software developer working at a fortune 500 financial company. 30 mins stand up every day, 1 hour retro every week and maybe 1 or 2 hours a week of impromptu meetings on top of that.
mcdevhammer··on OpenLambda, a system for serverless computing
Actually "serverless" in the sense of the current buzz word is not P2P, it is basically Lambda: http://martinfowler.com/articles/serverless.html
mcdevhammer··on Hammerspoon – Powerful automation of OS X with Lua

mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: Have any of you switched to Bash on Windows?
I haven't tried it yet (still running 7) but I use the git bash shell all the time. Can anyone chime in on what the bash in Windows 10 gives you that git bash doesnt? Not that I've really fully explored but git bash seems to have a lot of the common utilities (it has grep and vim).
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: What command line interface do you wish had a graphical user interface?
I find gitx is pretty good.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: How long did it take you to get your first dev job?
I didn't go to a big name university. I did a 3 year college diploma that had coop. I had a job lined up before I even finished school and a few months later had 2 competing offers (one from a company I coop'd at). I think the key thing that helped me was being able to put work experience on my resume from doing coop.

Also I put a lot of effort into making my resume the best I could. Don't neglect this. It is the #1 most important thing you need to do when searching for a job.

You mentioned your intern experience being at 'lower tier' comonies. Are you maybe being too picky in where you are applying?

mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: Why do programmers suck at estimating hours?
Seems to just be the nature of it. Every single project I have ever worked on was delivered late.
mcdevhammer··on What are the biggest headaches as a developer or systems admin?
Change tickets. Change tickets for everything.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: What's the code you've written of which you are the most proud?
Probably the toy compiler I wrote for a c like language: https://github.com/claassen/CmC and the parser generator it uses to parse source code: https://github.com/claassen/ParserGenerator
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: What are some important math topics every programmer should know?
Depends on the industry I suppose. I work in the financial industry and I have used linear algebra quite a bit and graph theory as well. I would say linear algebra in pretty important as it is also used heavily in graphics/games.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
An HTML5 canvas UI framework. Not really serious, just wanted to finally learn to do OO javascript properly and see where it goes.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: Looking for a remote minimum wage job/task
Lol
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: How much you make, how long did it take for you to get there?
$65k + bonuses comes to about $75k. C# developer in Toronto.
mcdevhammer··on One-bit signed integers
I don't understand.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: Your recommendations for Windows PC backup software solutions?
One I haven't seen mentioned yet is http://www.evault.com. Industrial grade and very feature rich. Can't really compare to other products as I haven't really used any myself, I just used to work there.
mcdevhammer··on What Coding Languages do you know
Know really well: C# --- Know well: C, C++, Java, Javascript --- Kind of decent: PHP, Python --- Have used: x86 Assembly, Ruby
mcdevhammer··on Introducing Runnable JavaScript, CSS, and HTML Code Snippets
Sandbox for trying it out: http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/239456/stack-snippet...
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: What is the best Windows Laptop in 2014?
After looking at the Thinkpad W540 the specs and price are pretty close compared to the MBP, but I think I'm gonna go with the Mac. It looks a lot nicer, is lighter, has longer battery life, has plus I get to play with the Mac OS which I have never used before.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: What is the best Windows Laptop in 2014?
+1 On the Thinkpads, never really looked at them before. I like how you can customize the specs a lot.
mcdevhammer··on Ask HN: How do you go from being an average developer to a great one?
A lot of reading blogs, articles, etc. online, and a lot of time spent in your spare time working on projects. Also working on things that are new and challenging to you. Also if you come across something you don't understand while reading and article or working on a project don't just skip over it, spend the time to really understand the concept.
mcdevhammer··on Gravity Simulator
When a small particle gets accelerated to great speeds as it approaches a massive object it simply passes through because the collisions are off/aren't perfect even when they're on
mcdevhammer··on HTML5 Gravity/Galaxy Simulator
It was really meant just as a toy and not a scientifically rigorous simulation. Any value of theta is going to make not 100% accurate (not to mention the simulation speed which also affects accuracy).
mcdevhammer··on HTML5 Gravity/Galaxy Simulator
I also wrote a 3D version in C++ using OpenGL https://github.com/claassen/GalaxySim3D
mcdevhammer··on Gravity Simulator
Done. Although I did this years ago: http://mobile.sheridanc.on.ca/~claassen/Gravity/Gravity.html
