mcculley··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
I think the use of “nazi” is simply sloppy thinking, but if you are genuinely interested in problematic quotes from Musk, he posts to Twitter very often.
mcculley··on WaveDigger: Dig into wireless signals to discover their physical locations
I get that this is how iMessage works, as I understand it. I am wondering what tradeoffs make Apple decide to use the Secure Enclave versus more mundane certificate infrastructure and how they would make it hard for us to get at this with a debugger if they chose that route.
mcculley··on WaveDigger: Dig into wireless signals to discover their physical locations
Are you imagining some certificate unique to each device? What would prevent someone copying it?
mcculley··on WaveDigger: Dig into wireless signals to discover their physical locations
Why would it be cut off? Doesn’t Apple use this on devices?
mcculley··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Yes, and it makes sense to add the stylus/pencil after app developers had to learn how to deal with finger taps only. Apple did the same thing with the original Mac. There were no arrow keys on the first model, so that developers were forced to accommodate the mouse.
mcculley··on Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Chairman, Names Son to Replace Him
I appreciate this correction as I had misremembered his dual roles.

mcculley··on Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Chairman, Names Son to Replace Him
Evolutionary psychology is stronger than whatever they thought previously.
mcculley··on Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Chairman, Names Son to Replace Him
A lot of rich men, when younger, say that they will not leave so much of the wealth to their children. Then they get older and realize what other old men realized.
mcculley··on Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Chairman, Names Son to Replace Him
But we have been told for a long time that Buffett was a very active Chairman.
mcculley··on Astra for Law
When it can imagine real risks and not hallucinations, I am sure it will be better than having a human lawyer write the agreement. I am not convinced that we are there yet.
mcculley··on Astra for Law
In my experience, those expensive specialists help me protect against things me and the counterparty cannot even imagine when making an agreement. Do you mean that this would be fixed by AI or by making simpler agreements?
mcculley··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
No. The reason Guantanamo Bay is used as a prison is because we don't have a legal framework to handle some individuals in the United States. The use of Guantanamo Bay for domestic criminals would be a failure of the justice system.
mcculley··on Stop making swap partitions–use swap files instead
It would be nice if the VFS had a hook for providing swap pages, making this manual futzing less necessary.
mcculley··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Long ago there was a Usenet over satellite feed: http://www.art.net/lile/pagesat/netnews.html
mcculley··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Will they figure out how to fit the new C2 cellular modem into a MacBook Pro?
mcculley··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Every time I click a stupid cookie notice I wonder why the company serving it up chose to make me go through that rather than not track me.
mcculley··on Indirect Calling of Nested Functions on GCC Without Executable Stack
Not just security. Instruction caches must also be aware of self-modifying code.
mcculley··on Starbase, LA
More of Musk's ventures need a Gwynne Shotwell. Imagine what Tesla could do with a full-time adult at the helm.
mcculley··on Value Classes Still Need Compiler Sympathy
It was not at all “suddenly”. The discussions about explicitly defining value types because escape analysis is insufficient have been going on for at least a decade.
mcculley··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
What corpus would one be advised to use for training? Should one limit oneself to legally downloadable documents or should one follow the examples of Altman, Amodei, and Zuckerberg and use LibGen and Anna's Archive?

mcculley··on DeepSeek Harness developer preview
You seem to believe that every potential interlocutor is bypassing the firewall. I know that many are not, because they are afraid of being caught.
mcculley··on DeepSeek Harness developer preview
This has not been my experience working with Chinese citizens. They are mostly very aware that they cannot speak freely.
mcculley··on DeepSeek Harness developer preview
I am not asking about capability. Aren't there reasons to avoid the scrutiny that might accompany bypassing the Great Firewall? Doesn't this create a chilling effect? Or are you claiming that it has zero effect and citizens of China have zero concerns about using websites and speaking freely?
mcculley··on DeepSeek Harness developer preview
Wouldn't many potential users in China be limited by the Great Firewall?
mcculley··on DeepSeek Harness developer preview
I am very curious about this, not for myself, just for the geopolitical consequences. Does this mean China is making it easy for citizens of other countries to come work there?
mcculley··on ChatGPT Work
This is an interesting data point amidst the anxiety about AI taking all of the jobs. Even OpenAI cannot leverage AI to do product management.
mcculley··on Programmers need to start meditating
> It's painfully boring and not relaxing at all.

It is a common misconception that the purpose of meditation is to relax. My experience is that meditation is very difficult but has worthwhile benefits for those around me after I meditate.

mcculley··on Zuckerberg 'Admits' Meta's Layoffs Were Ineffective
It does not have to be either one. Zuckerberg is simply not a great leader, apparently. This is not surprising. Few people can run big companies. There is a huge spectrum between "dimwitted" and "great CEO".
