mcarrano··on Ask HN: What web hosting service do you use? (2011 edition)
I too use HostGator and very satisfied.

Several clients I did work for had GoDaddy hosting and I would run into all sorts of issues with them.

mcarrano··on Mac OS X Lion: Should You Upgrade or Wait?
Agreed, I'm holding off on installing Lion.
mcarrano··on Ask HN: Showing personal projects to potential employers
If the company has an API, build something with it.
mcarrano··on Ask HN: Am I at a disadvantage for not attending Stanford, MIT, etc?
You are only at a disadvantage if you don't make the most of your time.

I am still in school and while all the interviews I have had for internships tested my school knowledge the big question they always asked was... "What have you done?".

They want to make sure you are capable of getting things done and that is really what matters.

mcarrano··on Ask HN: How many HN members are there?
I would say at best this gives a rough estimate of the amount of users.

I tried searching my own username and it does not appear in the results.

Perhaps I just failed at using Google?

mcarrano··on Ask HN: Your favorite NYC-area custom software development shops?
I interned at NPGroup last summer. They specialize in custom web development and also work with Open Source such as Drupal.

The website is www.npgroup.net and you can tell them Michael sent you.

They have developed sites for companies that have raised several million dollars in the past year.

mcarrano··on Ask HN: Can someone mock interview me?
I will definitely take up on your offer. I am now following you on twitter and will be in touch soon.
mcarrano··on Ask HN: Soon to be high school graduate with two full time job offers. Help?
You are in a great position.

As someone who is currently in college and was in a similar situation as you. I ultimately chose to go to college since I felt I only have one chance to get the true college experience.

I do not regret my choice at all, I feel the connections and memories I have made are invaluable to any job offer I received coming out of high school.

Ultimately the choice is yours and do what you feel is best for you now and what will line you up for a successful future.

mcarrano··on Ugly Software (like Blackboard) Gives Education a Bad Name
As a student still in college, I cannot stand blackboard. I cringe every time I need to use it because it is ugly, slow, confusing and often does not work correctly.

Most professors prefer not to use it but are forced to by the College since they are paying for BB services.

I personally feel the education sector is a wide open game, create something that will increase learning potential and bring more value to a students degree and you will have success.

mcarrano··on Ask HN: To fight or not to fight piracy?
While I do not know the details of your application such as whether or not ads are displayed.

Is it possible that you display ads to pirated users and no ads to legitimate buyers? I do not have experience with iPhone/iPad development so I am not sure if this is even possible.

mcarrano··on Ask HN: How do you balance college and a startup?
I am in the same situation.

I'm a Junior majoring in Computer Science and I have several side projects that I have been trying to finish up. However, school work takes up a majority of my time so I rely mostly on my winter/summer break to get the bulk of my personal projects completed.

You might suggest I code on the weekends but that is not a possibility as a majority of the time I have so much homework that I need to dedicate weekends to completing the assignments.

mcarrano··on Apple store blocks reddit? Any others?
The Apple store near me didn't block Reddit when I was there earlier this month.

One time, I was shocked to see a pornographic website open on a Macbook Pro that had been sitting idle. Granted this incident was almost a year ago.

mcarrano··on Sources: Groupon rejects Google’s offer; will stay independent
I feel Groupon has had great success so far due to the economy.

Businesses are looking to make any kind of money while consumers are looking to save as much as possible. Groupon offers this to both users.

I spoke to a family friend that owns a restaurant and ran a Groupon offer, they are less than pleased with how it turned out. Never have they seen so many "customers" come in and not leave tips for their waiter/waitress and none are repeat customers.

mcarrano··on 200 students cheat on senior midterm exam, many blame professor
As a student in college, this story is alarming to me.

At my University, it is common for... 1. Departments to post up old exams for students to practice. 2. Professors recommend that you track down older students for their old tests. 3. Students often create practice exams and hand them out to their peers.

I do not believe that all 200 students are guilty of cheating but perhaps the initial few who had their hands on the practice exam knew exactly what they were getting into.

mcarrano··on What Happened to NewsBlur: A Hacker News Effect Post-Mortem
Hey Samuel, I met you at the Hackers and Founders meet up in NY a week ago. I remember you telling me about Newsblur and so I took a look at it and I am very impressed and will continue to use it.

All the best to you and Newsblur

mcarrano··on Ask HN: Do CS students enjoy C anymore?
I'm a student at Stevens Institute of Technology...

As an introductory language, you are taught Java but when you move up to higher level courses such as Algorithms, Data Structures, etc you will us C.

I've also taught myself C++ and I prefer it over C but I have no issue working in any language provided I learn the syntax.
