mbirth··on StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta
OSM editor Go Map!! also has a "Quests" overlay that is very similar to Street Complete (even uses the same icons). And you can also define custom quests for data you want to easily gather.

However, it's lacking the nice example pictures for each option - so, with Go Map!! you need to know what you're doing.

mbirth··on StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta
It's https://osmapp.org - as in OsmAPP. Not to be confused with https://osmaps.org, the Ordnance Survey Maps.
mbirth··on StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta
https://cartes.app is trying to do this. OsmAnd is quite usable as well.

For navigation there's Magic Earth (can route around traffic jams), TomTom, and Scenic. OsmAnd can also do routing.

mbirth··on I said no and Apple said yes
Or the EU with their online chat control. First round they couldn’t get a majority. Then, they sneakily turned it around so people had to vote to NOT want it. The day they did the second vote, many were on holiday and thus it passed.
mbirth··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
YouTuber Pleasant Green has several videos about all those fake ads making rounds. The one about fake old people is this one:

mbirth··on I think I hate the internet
Twitter has the “Following” tab that only shows stuff from the accounts you’re following. Facebook has something similar, just a bit more hidden.

But IMHO the bigger problem is that people became less social in general. I remember those fearmongering messages doing rounds which made people lock up their profiles and not post anything about their holidays as burglars could use that information to break into their houses.

Then there’s this thing where most people try to craft this perfect online presence with only carefully (and often heavily edited) photos and nothing too personal.

And in general, people seem to be much less open than “back in the early days”. Say “Hi!” to someone in the wrong mood and you’ll just get insta-blocked. Everybody is just caressing their profile but don’t want to have anything to do with the “social” part of the social network. Well, apart from collecting likes.

Also: something something every village had their idiot, now they form (online) villages
mbirth··on Making a Python interpreter in 1024 bytes
At a former workplace where most stuff was done in PHP, some colleagues used whitespace very liberally. Like, indentation was just a random amount of whitespace, every line slightly different. Sometimes 2 or more spaces between keywords, etc.

After that experience Python code is like eye-bleach to me.

mbirth··on Lazygit
For most CLI/TUI tools, TerminalTrove has a short video showing the tool in operation:

https://terminaltrove.com/lazygit/

And yes, a proper homepage should have this, too. It’s just that the link in the OP isn’t the proper homepage for LazyGit.

mbirth··on Ask HN: Advice on Migrating from 1Password?
KeePassXC has a merge feature for this scenario. Apps like Strongbox (macOS/iOS) merge automatically while saving. And I believe there are more apps doing this.
mbirth··on Develop Cross-Platform CLI and GUI Tools with Tcl/Tk
I wonder whether Delphi/Lazarus would be better suited for a native GUI on each platform. But you’d have to compile your app for each separately.
mbirth··on Develop Cross-Platform CLI and GUI Tools with Tcl/Tk
Fun fact: macOS hex editor "Hex Fiend" uses Tcl for its templating language:

mbirth··on Emacs vs. Vim 2026: 24.3% vs. 8% Usage, 20x Memory Gap
In that situation I’d rather use sshfs and whatever editor I’m fancying the most for the job.
mbirth··on Creepy Crawlies
I've simply blocked whole ASNs for Meta, Google, AWS, etc.
mbirth··on Creepy Crawlies
Similar to how people running an open SMTP are complicit in promoting spam, I see people running a wild public proxy as complicit in this malicious scraping activity.

And similar to how most people running mail daemons are using blackhole lists nowadays and are keen to not end up on there, maybe ISPs and web hosters can use the AbuseIPDB to sort out their customers.

Just doing nothing doesn't appear to stop the scans hammering my poor Raspberry Pi serving my few Git repositories.

mbirth··on Creepy Crawlies
Many thanks! I've just submitted the first batch of 3000 (daily limit) IP addresses.
mbirth··on Creepy Crawlies
I’d love a service like spamcop.net where I could submit my access_log and they lookup the abuse addresses and file abuse reports in my name. Maybe if people’s Internet access gets suspended they’ll think about installing random apps that work as a proxy in the background.
mbirth··on Creepy Crawlies
If these were actual legitimate bots using a known user-agent and coming from the same subnet so you could throttle their requests it would be fine.

But I’m seeing requests coming in from random IP addresses from all over the world using randomised user-agents. But somehow these are trying URLs in sequential order. A while ago this would be classed as a DDoS cyber attack.

mbirth··on Advertisers Could Soon Demand 'Verified Clicks'
You know, there was a time when people actually paid to have their content hosted online. You read that right. Instead of trying to make money with a website, people PAID money to have a website.
mbirth··on That's a Lot of YAML
Every good editor can make these “invisible” characters visible.
mbirth··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
It will be the equivalent of that Excel =COPILOT(“sum the numbers above”) meme.
mbirth··on Introducing Toast 1
I was looking forward to a new version of the macOS CD/DVD burning software.
mbirth··on Dear people who work at the airport
No, from the conversations I overheard these people have never heard of those 1-litre bag rules for flights in the EU. So, they clearly haven't even looked at all those posters.
mbirth··on Dear people who work at the airport
Doesn’t work. I was in a queue at SXF airport once. Everybody in the queue passed at least 5 whiteboard-sized posters explaining in detail that you need a 1 litre bag and what’s supposed to go in there. Also, what things you need to present at the check. Those same posters lined the walls of the hall. Yet basically every second person acted completely surprised when the security officer asked for their 1 litre bag. It’s as if those people forgot their brain at home and were all on autopilot.
mbirth··on Ntfy – open-source Push to Mobile
Notifications can carry metadata like specific alert sounds or priorities. High priorities will even break through silence modes of your phone.

And you get a nice client with icons for each notification source, can filter by them, etc.

mbirth··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
No, you can set it for each appointment individually.
mbirth··on Pixel Watch 5
I'm fully locked into Apple Watches as I'm using these features regularly. Not sure whether that counts as a power user.

- Time

- Notifications (also: dismissing a notification on the watch also removes it from the phone)

- Smart Stack (relevant info pops up automatically)

- Wakeup alarm

- Timers

- Payments

- Express Travel mode (yes, I'm aware of the vulnerability)

- Siri (especially great with the upcoming Siri AI)

- Medication tracking

- Heart rate monitoring, Sleep tracking, Sleep apnoea detection, ECG

- Phone calls while the phone is in a different room

- controlling Home devices

- automatic tracking of hikes or walks

Charging has never been an issue for me. I put it on the charger while I sit at the computer or game console in the evening and when I go to bed later, it's fully charged and ready for the night and the next day.

mbirth··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
> It would also be nice to have a configurable transportation choice for the time to leave notice.

If you set a location, you can tap on “Travel Time” and select whether you want to go by car, public transport, bicycle, or walk.

mbirth··on Show HN: SIEMatic, a fair-sourced observability and security platform
Someone is a fan of SIEMENS SIMATIC PLCs, it seems.
