Somewhat of a Typescript generalist, with interest in abstract nonsense.

maze-le··on Feelings of guilt may signal leadership potential (2012)
Robert Conquest, a British historian specialized in the history of the Soviet Union.
maze-le··on SaaS services behind a startup
Yep, it's around 60 bucks per person per month. Compared to a developer salary of around 6000$/M (in central Europe) it's not even 1% of the salary cost per person. A hand-wavey calculation I know, most developers in the US make more than that, there are additional costs per person and there are not only developers in an organization that size. But All in all, it's not that much...
maze-le··on 'Serious errors' in research linking deaths to red meat
We (as a society) might start with assigning more value to reproduction in general. There is an implicit assumption that reproduction and verification (or falsification) of published results is somehow not worthy of time and attention.
maze-le··on Black MIDI
Its like watching a 'shoot em up' lets play from the early 90ies...
maze-le··on Everyone seems to forget why GNOME and GNOME 3 and Unity happened
I consider the "need to drop into a terminal to debug certain things" a big plus to be honest. I work with windows machines from time to time and wish PS would be simpler and more expressive.
maze-le··on ‘The War on Music’ Review: Songs Without Listeners
Probably referring to Györgi Ligeti -- IMO one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. Or more generally to the post WWII Avant Garde: Ligeti, Boulez, Stockhausen, Berio.

maze-le··on Ante: A low-level functional language
Pointers and manual memory management apparently.
maze-le··on The silent majority of experts (2012)
Anything even slightly critical about nuclear energy. Even if you are pro-nuclear but with certain doubts about some aspects of the technology or its role in society.
maze-le··on United States vs. One Book Called “Ulysses”
The Book was published in 1922, but the story takes place in 1904. So its actually the 118th Bloomsday.
maze-le··on DALL-E 2 generates images of Kermit The Frog in various films
We are kind of already there (not having entertainment in common). It is hard to find a TV series or film that everyone in my friendship circle knows equally well -- the last one was Breaking Bad, and that was over 10 years ago. Everyone finds their niche interest I suppose. Its almost the same with music -- the last decade where our musical interests converged were the 90ies.
maze-le··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Not a game per se, but a setting I'd like to be explored: may it be in film, literature or gaming:

A Member of a civilization near the heat death of the universe:

Live has flourished throughout the universe for the last 100 Billions of years, but the only things that are inevitable are taxes and the heat death. How do you cope with the dying of everything? Gain energy by evaporating stars near a galaxy size black hole. Embrace the infinite darkness or join a cult that exits the universe through a ring-singularity into a new big bang.

maze-le··on U+237C ⍼ Right Angle with Downwards Zigzag Arrow
Funny enough, I've only seen it at the Gymnasium (secondary level) and not in the University a few years later -- then indeed the usual symbols were the 'slashed' relations like you've described, or the bottom symbol: ⊥ in logic. Maybe it's an idiosyncrasy of a certain subset of math teachers.
maze-le··on U+237C ⍼ Right Angle with Downwards Zigzag Arrow
It's used in german mathematics education (secondary level), either to mark a contradiction in a proof or more generally to mark an erroneous statement.
maze-le··on The Cube Rule (2017)
Any simply connected, closed 3-manifold is homeomorphic to a calzone...
maze-le··on The Code Review Pyramid
Its obvious from the context that "c" is the only variable name that should represent a context.
maze-le··on Hackers claim to have breached Okta systems
Do you know a good alternative identity provider that I can run out-of-the box on my own servers/pods? I've used Okta quite extensively in the past and always recommended it to clients because: "They have more expertise around network security than your small team". I kind of regret this now... But I also don't want to implement my own IdP from scratch...
maze-le··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
> Imagine a Germany in which the rest of your life isn't determined at age ten

What you imply here is entierly untrue. I know lots of people that made their Abitur after having been to the Haupt- or Realschule first. That is not to say that the school system doesn't have its problems -- it clearly has -- but you are painting a picture that is not rooted in reality.

maze-le··on Decrypting your own HTTPS traffic with Wireshark
I still remember how flashed I was seeing the byte-by-byte analysis of a network package for the first time -- it was a real eye opening moment for me.
maze-le··on Deep learning is hitting a wall?
That is pretty interesting -- I didn't knew that. I would classify this behaviour also as protocultural.

maze-le··on Deep learning is hitting a wall?
Actually, tool usage in primates is a form of culture (protoculture). Those groups that have mastered it can be better of than those that didn't -- giving them an evolutionary advantage. The "tools" can be suprisingly complex, see for example:

maze-le··on Universe Splitter
Wow, that was quite a ride, thanks for sharing!
maze-le··on Why I will never buy another Samsung device
Absolutely agree, this was a red line for me as well. Coming with pre-installed crapware is one thing, but installing it during a security update is just malicious. I switched to a Google Pixel 4a with Calyx OS around a year ago and never regretted it even once. I mean -- what are they thinking about their userbase? They didn't just lose a customer they've gained an enemy.
maze-le··on Can GPT-3 AI write comedy?
To be fair, its pretty shallow and fluffy... Exactly the kind of 'philosophy' I would expect from the 'life advice' section of my local bookshop, but nothing really intellectually satisfying. The phrasing is great though -- I am always impressed how well this works with gpt3: The choice of words gives the text a certain (simulated) glimmer of profundity.
maze-le··on Ideas that have been beaten to death
For me they are just piling up. I usually don't delete them and have a seemingly endless list on all of my "bookmark folders" that just keeps on growing -- after a few years some url schemas change or sites go down and the bookmarks don't work any longer.
maze-le··on Simulation of a 2B-atom cell that metabolizes and grows like a living cell
That's fascinating, thanks for sharing!
maze-le··on Doing too much work on one's own before looping in others
> ship functionality on the daily

This creates unnecessary exaggerated expectations. There is only so much you can accomplish in one day, some functionality take way loger than that. We don't want to ship half baked solutions, but we are expected to do so... In order to accomplish that sacrifices have to be made on everything else that is important in software development: proper testing, documentation, refactoring and a clean codebase. Its perfectly valid for a developer to give the update "I am still working on ..." / "I am still trying to figure out:..." / "I am in the process of preparing the codebase for this update" for a certain period of time.

maze-le··on Tarrare
Or starving... Dogs, cats and corpses is pretty mild compared to what happened to people during the "Great Leap Forward" or the "Potato Famine" (or any other famine or prolonged siege in history)...
maze-le··on Tarrare
> After some time, a 14-month-old child disappeared from the hospital, and Tarrare was immediately suspected. Percy was unable or unwilling to defend him, and the hospital staff chased Tarrare from the hospital, to which he never returned.

Thanks for the nightmares...
