I'm sure they'll throw the book at them.
maxwell··on Ask HN: Can AI make American football comprehensible to non-Americans?
Where's the confusion...?
maxwell··on Software development topics I've changed my mind on
While everyone has a favorite ES Lint ruleset but few agree on which to use.
maxwell··on Newsstands, 2012-2019
I didn't see any left the last time I was in New York.

Seems like all the payphones and newsstands are really gone now, e.g. https://maps.app.goo.gl/2vZUGBxvSgdpcdju6

maxwell··on What makes a great mocktail? (2018)
You can just call it "texture," but it's a fun term d'art.

As with "automatic memory collection" for those grossed out by "garbage collection."

maxwell··on Ask HN: How do you guard against ChatGPT use in technical interviews?
Ask questions that involve trade-offs, be they design or performance related, and explicitly tell candidates that you're benchmarking against ChatGPT and expect something beyond what an LLM would give, i.e. you're looking more for creative/critical thinking than mere correctness.

maxwell··on Trespassing for the Common Good
The right to roam is enshrined in the State Constitutions of New Hampshire and Vermont, and State law in Maine.

maxwell··on Stanley Kubrick's the Shining Maps of the Overlook
I'm reading Carrie, good book so far, reminds me of high school (in Maine) but more the stories recounted by teachers. It reads basically as historical fiction in the little details (jocks and seamstresses and such), while also seeming sadly in line with some recent events. In the early '70s it seems like it was cool to conform, as King explicitly asserts in the book. In the early '00s it was cool to be different. Now it seems like conformity is (was?) cool again, pretty disturbing. I'd consider making the book required reading if I were a high school English teacher.

I saw the movie in high school in the '00s, very faithful to the novel and the casting was even more amazing reading the book (which is 90% of directing, according to Scorsese (who was introduced to De Niro by De Palma)), and to me surpasses the source material. Hits harder as a linear narrative.

maxwell··on ‘With brain preservation, nobody has to die’
I'm reading a book from 1974 right now. The book I read before that was a 2013 adaptation of a book from 1605. The book I read before that was from 1956.

The book I read before was from 1985: I started it while the author was still alive but he died before I finished it. The book I read before that was from 1998.

maxwell··on Proposed amendment to legal presumption about the reliability of computers
Forcing transparency isn't outsourcing anything.
maxwell··on Proposed amendment to legal presumption about the reliability of computers
And that has resulted in massive industrial consolidation and lack of innovation in food, drugs, healthcare, consumer products, chemicals, automotive/aerospace/locomotive manufacturing, construction, utilities, energy, payments, finance, accounting, and media outside "tech," where we manage our own dependencies.

Rocket science is one of the few industries that's actually seeing active innovation.

maxwell··on Proposed amendment to legal presumption about the reliability of computers
That would seem to result in industry consolidation and declining innovation.

Software isn't made of physical materials anyway, it's speech. How about instead we impose open source requirements to enable public verification of critical systems?

maxwell··on Proposed amendment to legal presumption about the reliability of computers
Who maintains the mandated dependencies? Who performs certification?

What prevents regulatory capture?

maxwell··on Proposed amendment to legal presumption about the reliability of computers
Transparency and competition seem to work better than certifications and credentials.

Just mandate open source if using public money.

maxwell··on Proposed amendment to legal presumption about the reliability of computers
You want some government mandating your dependencies...?

And the First should only cover religions, forms of speech, printing technologies, venues of public assembly, and petitioning grievances that existed before it was "created"?

Why would we want to incentivize and optimize for busting down doors? Sounds more like the Bill of Rights working as intended here.

maxwell··on Netflix is removing nearly all of its interactive titles
Funny that the technical reality is the inverse, i.e. media is read-only and storage/playback is now trivial beyond availability, software is executable and requires a degree of active maintenance.
maxwell··on The egg or the chicken? An ancient unicellular says egg
The egg.

But it looks like phylotypic animal body plans may have originated in cell aggregates before the development of the egg:

maxwell··on What Came First, The egg or the chicken? An ancient unicellular says egg
There's a gradient of chickenness.
maxwell··on The egg or the chicken? An ancient unicellular says egg
In practice, the chickens I see along the sides of roads clearly know what roads are. And don't cross them.
maxwell··on The egg or the chicken? An ancient unicellular says egg
Yep, Aristotle was wrong. "Chicken and egg problems" aren't paradoxes, the challenge is to find which is the egg.
maxwell··on The Constitutional Case Against Exclusionary Zoning (Texas Law Review)
Whatever the case federally, States can ban asset forfeiture. Mine became the fourth to do so in 2021:

https://reason.com/2021/07/14/maine-becomes-4th-state-to-rep...

Same with exclusionary zoning. State laws can strike down Euclid. SB 9 in California appears to move in that direction:
