maxnoe··on An Update on Leap Seconds (2022)
* That's why there's UT1 and TAI for different purposes.

UTC is a (strange) compromise between both: ticking SI seconds like TAI but being kept within 1 second of UT1.

maxnoe··on AsciiMath: An easy-to-write markup language for mathematics
Use the power of combinatorics! 26 keys offer 18252 2 letter + three letter combinations.

Using special chars even more.

Compose key is memetic and easy to use on all operating systems.

maxnoe··on Breaking the Snake: How Python went from 2 to 3
Python absolutely already has deprecation warnings, that would be nothing new
maxnoe··on Python 2 removed from Debian
The removal of implicit conversion between bytes and strings via ascii did not introduce bugs, it showed were you already had bugs that you maybe did not yet notice.
maxnoe··on SGCL: Real-time garbage collector for C++
The simulation code we use is a 88kLOC Fortran77 file which is in continuous development since the eighties.

And that's just the main file, it uses several libraries for lower level operations.

maxnoe··on How to Befriend Crows
On La Palma, there is a pair of ravens living up in the mountain near the observatory.

They are incredibly smart and very tame. They will happily land on your shoulder while you try to eat your lunch and pick away into your lunch box.

They will do loopings above groups of tourists, land, beg for food, and when they receive food, do some more fly-bys and loopings.

They bury food in the ground and I bet they find all of it later.

I am pretty sure they recognize people, as they came straight for me and my wife when we were hiking and not to the other people around...

maxnoe··on AVR-GCC Compiler Makes Questionable Code
What do you mean with: "5.4 is the Version that ships with Ubuntu"?

5.4 was the default compiler on Ubuntu 16.04, which is end of life.

Ubuntu 18.04: 7.4 Ubuntu 20.04: 9.3 Ubuntu 22.04: 11.2

maxnoe··on EU-wide maximum limit of €10K for cash payments
My father in law was a used Carsten salesman until he fetired two years ago.

Most used cars are bought using loans. I.e. the bank provides a loan specifically for bying that car, directly via the dealership.

maxnoe··on Bright flash is a black hole jet pointing at Earth, astronomers say
The name comes from BL Lacertae (the prototypical object) and Quasar (A kind of Active Galactic Nucleus, that name is for quasi stellar, which it really isn't...)
maxnoe··on Northrop Grumman unveils B-21 bomber
B2 and B21 are capable of carrying nuclear bombs, doesn't mean that's the only thing they do:

maxnoe··on If PHP Were British (2011)
Or Doppelback, a break type
maxnoe··on Web Archive appears to be down
Just visit it in the wayback machine...
maxnoe··on Windows Subsystem for Linux Is Officially Released
The link has a section on that:

maxnoe··on Why does calloc exist? (2016)
Minor nitpick: on my mobile view there is a linebreak between base and exponent, that's a bit irritating.

maxnoe··on Three new utility functions in C++23
Effective modern C++ is by Scott Meyers, not Herb Sutter.
maxnoe··on Zero point leet seconds (2018)
I only learned it when I got married and had to hand in a copy of my entry in the birth registry.

Missed leet time by one minute though...

In our working group (astrophysics) leet o clock is the traditional time for cake.

maxnoe··on Sudo: Heap-based overflow with small passwords

maxnoe··on Canon EOS R7 Disassembly and Teardown
Sony has opened up the mount specification to third party lens manufacturers, Canon didn't.

As a result, there is a wide range of third party lenses evailable for Sony FE, none for Canon RF.

maxnoe··on Python 3.11.0 final
conda-forge has already published 3.11 packages:

    conda create -c conda-forge -n py311 python=3.11
maxnoe··on Python 3.11.0 final
It's already there:

https://anaconda.org/conda-forge/python

Using mamba to create a new encoding called py311 with python 3.11:

    mamba create -n py311 python=3.11
maxnoe··on Windows Terminal is now the default command line in Windows 11
Cmd.exe and powershell are shells, not terminal emulators.

This is about the GUI running the shell, which used to be conhost.

cmd.exe and powershell both run inside terminal (or conhost).

maxnoe··on Record-breaking gamma-ray burst possibly most powerful explosion ever recorded
LHC has a center of mass energy of 14 TeV, pretty close to the mentioned 18 TeV. That's however for protons, not photons. You really can only accelerate charged particles, as we use magnetic and electric fields for that. You need roughly a factor of ten higher energy of the charged particle to produce a certain energy gamma ray.

Proton collisions are messy, and not the best way to get photons at certain energies. There is a new up to 1 TeV electron collider planned in Japan [1].

Note however that these 18 TeV are only the highest energy Photon from a GRB. LHAASO observed gamma rays up to 1.4 PeV from other sources (mostly galactic super nova remnants) [2].

maxnoe··on Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger
Not the reaction I got from my colleagues, they were all just like "WTF, how can this happen?"
maxnoe··on Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger
The guy presenting the topic called Erwin Schrödinger "Edwin", both in writing on his slides and verbally.

I was bewildered to see a blunder of that magnitude in the official nobel presentation...

maxnoe··on Neovim 0.8 Released
The whole reason there ever was a vim 8 was neovim and the pressure it applied to implement async plugins and terminal.

Without neovim, we'd still be on vim 7.xxxxx

maxnoe··on Show HN: Get conversational practice in over 20 languages by talking to an AI
Not necessarily. Learning enough English to understand the UI is much lower level than being able to converse.

It's also the difference between active and passive command of the language.

maxnoe··on Ask HN: Why hasn't the deep learning community embraced Julia yet?
This should cataoult you into an example jupyter notebook with a julia kernel:

maxnoe··on Why A4? – The Mathematical Beauty of Paper Size
That's not true, the most common envelope at least in Germany is DL for DIN Long [1], which requires folding A4 in thirds and there is a corresponding DIN norm on how to print fold marks to aid the folding in thirds [2]

maxnoe··on Kagi/Orion status update: First three months
Much of that will be the crawling and indexing that has to be done independent of the number of users, right?

So costs per user will go down with the number of users as this fixed cost is shared between more requests/users.

maxnoe··on Telegram is asking German users when to share information with law enforcement
No they don't sync just fine. A device cannot receive chat history from before it was added and signal regularly "forgets" linked devices, losing all messages on the device and starting from scratch after relinking.
