maxhille··on The era of boundary-breaking advancements is over? [video]
I mean there are different definitions on what to call an AGI. Most of the time people don't specify which one they use.

For me an AGI would mean truly at least human level as in "this clearly has a consciousness paired with knowledge", a.k.a. a person. In that case, what do the investors expect? Some sort of slave market of virtual people to exploit?

maxhille··on Poltergeist: File watcher with auto-rebuild for any language or build system
I was using different file watching methods for personal projects over the years and they all suffered in some way. So I built a really simplistic one for my use cases.

maxhille··on Reversing a Fingerprint Reader Protocol (2021)
Of course I won't, but then again I would send you pictures of any other body parts the same.

If someone gets a hand on anything you touched, they have your fingerprint. Last time you traveled to another country - did you have to give them fingerprints? Is the software running your phone closed source? Could you ambush me at night near my house and forcefully take them?

All I am saying is they are so weak as a secret that rhey should not be regarded as one.

maxhille··on Reversing a Fingerprint Reader Protocol (2021)
I don't think fingerprints should be regarded as a secret.
maxhille··on EU commissioner shocked by dangers of some goods sold by Shein and Temu
Not sure how you came to that conclusion. Looking at the "CE" logo issue, we know chinese companies try to cheat their products around regulations.
maxhille··on In the long run, GPL code becomes irrelevant (2015)
BSD & Co are open source for developers

GPL & Co are open source for users

maxhille··on Two-step system makes plastic from carbon dioxide, water and electricity
That sounds like a good way to essentially poison our oceans - maybe we should try leaving some part of the planet somewhat intact?
maxhille··on Local-first software (2019)
How do you plan to do the syncing without some sort of cloud infrastructure?
maxhille··on Games run faster on SteamOS than Windows 11, Ars testing finds
WRT Nvidia+Sway this was certainly true not so long ago. But since the latest Ubuntu release and with a recent driver I am running this combo and it works flawlessly.
maxhille··on The Egg (By Andy Weir)
Funny coincidence - I just finished the Project Hail Mary audiobook this morning and loved it.

Any recommendations for the next audiobook?

maxhille··on Show HN: 10 teams are racing to build a pivotal tracker replacement
Really interested in why you would say that. I always think of the AGPL as the strictest/strongest possible license...
maxhille··on Small German town starts testing geothermal power utilizing new techniques
There is no "away from population centres" in central europe
maxhille··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
I prefer config files a lot to settings GUIs. Two most important points that come to mind:

1. I can manage them in Git 2. GUIs change all the time. With configs you have a much higher probability that some solution you googled will still work even when it is a couple of years old.

maxhille··on Stop Requiring CRLF Line Endings
In the tabs world this is just a style set by whatever displays the code, eg. the user's editor setting.

In the spaces world, you have the battle over how large indentation should be and everyone has to live with what someone else chose.

maxhille··on Freetube is the best way to watch YouTube
> This is classic "big corporations are bad". Simply put, the internet would be dead if it were not for megacorporations as you call them, like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.

Source?

maxhille··on Apple okays Epic Games marketplace app in Europe
I guess most Iphones are sold in a bundle with a carrier contract. Those bundles would become impossible. Without this scheme, most Iphone users would notice how overpriced their shiny status symbol actually is.
maxhille··on ChromeOS will soon be developed on large portions of the Android stack
IIRC Android uses a regular Linux Bluetooth stack.

Also WRT your problems: In case you did not yet, switch to Pipewire. When I did that a couple of years ago, my BT Audio experience went from bad to really good.

maxhille··on Project Wayfield – The JDK Wayland Desktop on Linux [video]
And AFAIK the only part of Xorg where development happens in the recent years.
maxhille··on Software vendors dump open source, go for the cash grab
1. It is GPL, so you can't change the license without permission from all contributors 2. It has lots of contributors. And now that I think about it I guess some of those are not even alive anymore to grant any sort of permission
maxhille··on Epic says Apple will reinstate developer account
You make it sound as if the Apple App Store did not track you.
maxhille··on New jet engine enables efficiency at every speed for cheaper orbital launches
Getting into orbit is more about horizontal speed than altitude.
maxhille··on Apple has not fixed the macOS audio left/right balance bug for nearly 10 years
For me Pipewire changed that equation.

I am now convinced it is the best audio stack on desktop.

maxhille··on Khronos Releases AV1 Decode in Vulkan Video with SDK Support for H.264/H.265
AFAIK Apple does not support Vulkan
maxhille··on Apple reportedly ready to enable sideloading for iOS users in the EU
It is french, but it does not seem to be EU.
maxhille··on OutRun – Open-source, privacy oriented, outdoor fitness tracker
> Even Apple can’t access the data.

They own your device 100%. Of course they can access your data...

maxhille··on Going declarative on macOS with Nix and Nix-Darwin
One of the points of Nix it to _not_ adhere to FHS
maxhille··on Switching Things over to Ikiwiki
Static site generators like Hugo should also work for you.
maxhille··on Little File Explorer – File Manager for Android 1.0 and above
AppCompat/JetPack don't do anything magical - they are just regular open source libraries.

If your app wants to use features which behave differently depending on the OS version, you have to if/else over the OS version. Also, note that the platform's Fragment implementation is deprecated and you might miss ViewModel.

maxhille··on Posts, profiles, and user search are now available without login
> "it's just twitter but you can write and use custom clients and feed algorithms"

Twitter was like that once. Just people flocking into the next walled garden...

maxhille··on How big is YouTube?
Just curious - what device and OS version are you on?
