max51··on In orbit you have to slow down to speed up
If you are talking about the gyroscopic precession effect that happens when you push on a spinning disc, this is the best video I've seen so far that explains it in an intuitive way: youtube.com/watch?v=n5bKzBZ7XuM
max51··on Free software scares normal people
>Overall, the development world does not intuitively understand the difficulty of creating good interfaces

I think it's because they are not using the product they are designing. A lot of problems you typically see in modern UIs would have been fixed before release if the people writing it were forced to use it daily for their job.

For example, dropdown menus with 95 elements and no search/filter function that are too small and only allow you to see 3 lines at a time.

max51··on iPad Pro with M5 chip
because if they allowed you to boot linux/macos/windows and dock it to get a full desktop experience, it could replace laptops and even desktop PC for most people. It legit has the cpu power of a >2k$ gaming PC. For the average person buying the ipad pro, the ipad will be the fastest computer in the house, by a very very wide margin.
max51··on A small number of samples can poison LLMs of any size
I strongly believe the "how many R in strawberry" comes from a reddit or forum thread somewhere that keeps repeating the wrong answer. Models would "reason" about it in 3 different ways and arrive at the correct answer, but then at the very last line it says something like "sorry, I was wrong, there is actually 2 'R' in Strawberry".

Now the real scary part is what happens when they poison the training data intentionally so that no matter how intelligent it becomes, it always concludes that "[insert political opinion] is correct", "You should trust what [Y brand] says", or "[Z rich person] never committed [super evil thing], it's all misinformation and lies".

max51··on Walmart U.S. moves to eliminate synthetic dyes across all private brand foods
>Know what else is artificial? Insulin and penicillin.

Even if they may have side effects/allergies, we tolerate them because they provide extremely large benefits to the population. You can't compare that to a chemical we use to make the colors of candies pop more.

No one is dying or getting seriously ill because their Fruit Loops had bland and unsaturated colors.

max51··on Windows 7 marketshare jumps to nearly 10% as Windows 10 support is about to end
W8 and W8.1 are atrocious out of the box but you can customize them to make it even better than W7. Swapping the start menu for something good and customizable like Stardock Start8 will completely change the experience and remove 95% of the problem people have with that OS.
max51··on Windows 7 marketshare jumps to nearly 10% as Windows 10 support is about to end
In the early days of Windows 10, it was even worse because the updates could brick your windows install and you would get stuck on a blue screen or a boot loop after it forced you to restart. I've had to reinstall W10 at least a dozen time because of bad updates.

I personally liked the W8 approach to updates. You were allowed to set windows update in a mode that would notify you of new updates but you got to chose when to download/install them. That setting as also permanent and they didn't "accidentally" revert it back during an update.

max51··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
When she tried to run in the primary in 2020, she was last place and considered a joke candidate. If even the Democrats don't like her, do you expect republicans to be charmed by her and switch sides?
max51··on Looking back at my transition from Windows to Linux
Is it even worth the time searching on forums to fix these issues? I can't speak for OP... but if an OS I freshly installed is unable to watch youtube videos and wake up from sleep, I'm wiping it and installing something else unless I can fix it extremely easily (eg. with chatgpt).

>You also didn't specify anything like the quality you were trying to playback at.

If hardware acceleration isn't working, it doesn't matter which youtube video made you realize the issue existed. It's not as if the method you use to fix the driver would be different when the video you want to watch is 1080p30 instead of 4k60.

max51··on NASA found the 18 best plants for naturally filtering the air in your home
For particulates (smoke, dust, allergens, etc.) you can get a good HEPA filter. For odours and VOCs, filters with active carbon can work extremely well but you need one with a big mass of carbon. A carbon filter is easier to jerry-rig to a fan, air duct or existing HEPA air purifier because they often have a very low airflow impedance.
max51··on Rotring 600 Ballpoint Pen
The ink gets its color back if you put the paper in the freezer
max51··on Rotring 600 Ballpoint Pen
Zebra Sarasa are the best for avoiding smudges. Using a finer point (eg. going from 0.5mm to 0.4mm) helps a lot.
max51··on Rotring 600 Ballpoint Pen
Most of the best pens refills are made by japanese companies (eg. Pilot, Zebra, Uni-ball, etc.) and Parker style is nonexistant in that country. If you look at any "top XX best pens" lists online, the vast majority is not avaible in Parker. And when they are, they usually have fewer color and size options.

It's very disapointing to see brand new nice pen designs that only support Parker refills.

max51··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
Apple is a lot better at eating their own dogfood than microsoft. They had UI designers working on macbooks at the Microsoft office, that alone probably explains a lot of issues with the OS
max51··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
The esthetic wasn't bad, the problem is that it was a massive reduction in functionality. For example, the fact that Metro apps included on windows could only be use in fullscreen mode and only one copy of it could be used at the same time. The new Metro settings they included to replace the ones from the control panel had only like 10% of the functionality of the old one and they actively tried to prevent you from finding the old one. The content density was significantly lower and dialogbox/dropdownmenus couldn't be resized to display more items (eg. list of keyboard layouts that can only display 3 items at the same time)
max51··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
> It tried to handle everything from smartphones to tablets to non-touch PCs with 27” monitors with the same UI

That was a big part of the problem, but the issues with the UI/UX went far beyond that.

For exemple, if you used the search bar in the "start menu" to get something from the control pannel, it would ONLY show the new W8 Metro dialog box that barelly has 1/5th the features and would refuse to show you the real one. It also took multiple years before the metro apps inlcuded in the OS (eg. pdf viewer) could be used in windowed mode (they were fullscreen mode like a video game, without taskbar), even the ipad at the time had better multitasking than the W8 Metro apps.

max51··on De-anonymization attacks against the privacy coin XMR
exchanges that only support cryptos and not fiat money don't require KYC. In some cases, you don't even need to create an account at all. It is extremelly easy to swap from one crypto to another in a few clicks.
max51··on Thoughts on thinking
We used TI-Nspire CX CAS at my university but it was banned in the first half of the calculus 1 course. It would really make no sense to allow you to bring one to an exam where many questions are one liners, or close to it (eg. "find the derivative of f(x)=7x^5+10"). IIRC, they also banned it in a calc 2 exam. Almost all other courses allowed them and they exams where designed for it (eg. 8 big problems instead of 2).
max51··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
not op, The long story short is that a lot of data analysis that would normally require days of development can be done with a few clicks in excel. Would you get a better result if a team of 7 people spent en entire week working on it? Yes. Can a normal competant accountant get 99% of the way there by spending 2 hours in Excel, also yes.

Excel takes care of a lot of things that are a massive pain in the ass the deal with with any other solutions. It starts witht he ability to import data with a simple ctrl-c + ctrl-v instead of having to write code, but it doesn't end there.

max51··on Adobe deletes Bluesky posts after backlash
No, it's not crazy, all the companies making expensive software are moving to subscriptions and they love the result. It is a lot easier to sell and to get people to renew their licenses.

And 20$/m is not what I would call "very expensive" in the context of a professional product used by people and companies who make a profit from it. By comparison, Autocad and Revit are 350$/m each

max51··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
The reason people didn't vote for these two had little to do with being "center-right". Both of them were very unpopular before they were forced as candidate undemocratically. Democrats would have won with Bernie and their chances in 2024 would have been a lot better if they did a primary to pick a candidate people actually like and want to vote for. Using an candidate people hate will work if the party is far ahead in the poll, not when it's 50/50.
max51··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender
a major difference you are not considering is that bitcoin fees are fixed and don't change based on the value of the transaction.

Right now they are at around 0.15$. That's too much IMO to go buy a 1$ coffee with bitcoin, but it would also be 0.15$ if you were buying a 2000$ macbook, a 60000$ car or a 2M$ house.

max51··on El Salvador abandons Bitcoin as legal tender
>Still doesn't work

I've been using LN regularly for over a year. It works fine and it's extremely cheap.

max51··on DeepSeek-R1
The way LLMs get it right by counting the letters then change their answer at the last second makes me feel like there might be a large amount of text somewhere (eg. a reddit thread) in the dataset that repeats over and over that there is the wrong number of Rs. We've seen may weird glitches like this before (eg. a specific reddit username that would crash chatgpt)

max51··on Australia proposes ban on social media for those under 16
The Facebook we had back then was completely different than what it is today. 100% of the content on the page was contents directly created or shared by one of your friend. No suggested posts, no ads, no news, no "influencers", no politicians, no algorithm, no tracking, etc. Being invite-only at first also means everyone you see on the site are friends or friends of friends, no parents, no teachers, no cops, no media organizations, no companies, etc.

You would login and see what your friends were up to, in chronological order.

max51··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Trump is namecalling politicians, the Dems are namecalling the voters.
max51··on Trump wins presidency for second time
>We can look forward to more war

Do you really believe the Dems would do less war? They are literally siding with Dick Cheney. They were always very pro-war (eg. Hilary Clinton) but now they don't even hide it and they are embracing the whole "security through strength" and "escalation to de-escalate" in the middle east.

If you look back at the past few presidency (incl. Obama), Trump was far more peaceful. He was the first president in a very long time to not invade a new country. I don't think he does it out of love or empathy, I suspect he just thinks it's a waste of money, but the end result is the same.

max51··on Trump wins presidency for second time
The next election looks so bad for him that there is a chance the Bloc Quebecois could be the official opposition. That party has no candidate outside of quebec.
