mauflows··on Container networking is simple (2020)
I hope k8s (or some managed subset) eventually provides a stable networking abstraction. There is so much to consider when it comes to network hardening and I'd like it to not have to constantly stress about it, feeling like I don't know enough.
mauflows··on When parties reverse their stance, supporters immediately switch their opinions
Great comment. I think globalizations problems are those of accountability at scale. I think one constant of humanity is that hierarchies / cultures / institutions will grow. So in that sense I see globalization as inevitable, but we haven't solved accountability. If we want to go the liberal route, our institutions need to be accountable for the externalities. I think this is almost impossible without backsliding into (also potentially-apocalyptic) factionalism
mauflows··on Ory Hydra 1.9: Open-source Golang OAuth2 provider
Thank you so much for your work on Ory suite. The documentation is top notch and I love the 12-factor principles. Two questions:

1. When would you use hydra as opposed to embedding auth flows yourself (with i.e. ory/fosite)?

2. Any idea when Kratos will 1.0?

mauflows··on Congress is set to ban most surprise medical bills
I've become more staunchly single payer after I had my first major medical hurdle of my adult life this year. I had switched insurance in January, but apparently my old insurance had a bug in their system. The effect was that they were accepting my claims, but then denying them. So I had to coordinate both insurances and get them on the same page. Then I had to call every one of my many providers, get them to understand, and then get them to reprocess the claim on their end. It was miserable and I had to deal with it while I was still dealing with a broken wrist and just hoping everything would work out.

I feel awful for anyone who has to deal with that and has less time than me. I had to take notes during every phone call and get the numbers of customer reps so they could vouch for what I was saying

mauflows··on Sharrows, the bicycle infrastructure that doesn’t work and nobody wants
Not to mention the condition of the road tends to be worse. 7ave in brooklyn is torn to shreds but has a deceptive sharrow
mauflows··on Sharrows, the bicycle infrastructure that doesn’t work and nobody wants
I'm a cyclist who in July was hit by a car on a sharrow lane when it made a right turn into me. Since they aren't always avoidable in brooklyn, I imagine my solution will be to just bike in the middle of the road (when I can bike again)

mauflows··on State of Self-Serve Website Building in 2020
The one time I was brought on to a WordPress project, it was deployed via ftp and there was an ominous text file (not named Readme) in the root that said something like "we had to use a lot of symlinks to get things to work. Be careful deploying"
mauflows··on RxDB – a real-time database on top of PouchDB
I love the idea of couchdb, but the ecosystem centers too much on pouch, which doesn't have consistent maintenance. If Ibm was smart they'd sponsor it in a big way.
mauflows··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
I'm pretty sure Signal at least doesn't encrypt at rest on your phone. So the drive would have to be encrypted as well, which is not default on Android

mauflows··on The Neoliberal Looting of America
Not an expert, but have experienced some pretty bad government services. I like the public market for private entities + gov entitlement route over public option. Seems like entitlements make it harder for a hostile administration to divest.

Plus soak the rich that neoliberalism helped create. Article didn't address this, but tenants of neoliberalism like free trade are helpful for peaceful negotiations among countries and global cooperation

> such as only downloading what you need

I think SPAs provide great benefits, but most users only visit a single page. So I would add that SPAs also tend to download more than you need (in JS) if it's something like a blog

Couldn't diversity be considered an objectively good thing to strive to have?

Anecdotally, I went to a technical school but some of my biggest shifts in perspective came from interacting with liberal arts and minority students.

mauflows··on Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone
I wouldn't say a chokehold ban is not real. The jury is still out, but it seems restricting use of force can help: https://www.vox.com/2020/6/5/21280402/8-cant-wait-explained-...

mauflows··on DirectX is coming to the Windows Subsystem for Linux
But then you have this thread with people running Cron jobs to free cached memory: https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/issues/4166

I imagine this will be addressed, but claims of lightweight seem exaggerated?

But even more on my mind is the impact on the windows host. Is it running as a guest under hyper v? What's the overhead?

mauflows··on DirectX is coming to the Windows Subsystem for Linux
I've had trouble researching if WSL2 is in fact a hyper-v managed VM. I've seen some documentation referring to WSL2 as a tightly integrated Krypton (scaled down hyper-V) VM. It seems to imply the host overhead isn't as high as a guest on hyper-V

mauflows··on CouchDB 3.0
If you indeed work for Cloudant, please consider trying to convince someone to invest in PouchDB. It looks mostly unmaintained and it would be in IBM's and the community's interest to keep it running!
mauflows··on CouchDB 3.0
I don't think couchbase has couchdb in mind for the mobile client anymore
