mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
As income levels go up, budgeting can be much more casual as you've described. You are still talking about budgeting. You are inferring that I believe all budgeting is an act of OCD.
mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
I'm not going to break down an entire budget for someone living on 40-50k, but if they are spending more than 25-30% on rent/mortgage they will have a real hard time making utilities, food, car, insurance, etc work.
mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
They have multiple import providers. I am set up to use Plaid. If you are using another it could be the cause of your issues.
mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
I feel like if I need to do any design work, then I must be too careless of a coder to begin with.
mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
I've taken many trips and budgeted for all of them. I plan in advance or if I feel like doing something spontaneous, I reallocate money from another budget item or from my discretionary bucket.
mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
You literally just described a budget.
mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
You just demonstrated that a high earner has a budget to invest a certain part of their money. I don't disagree that as your earnings go up that the budget can become higher level.
mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
Yes, if you are in your 30's with kids and not making enough to afford your bills, you need more jobs, higher paying jobs, or roommates.
mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
I'm with you on all of these except the mortgage/rent payment. 25% should be the goal IMO. I know it can be tough, especially at lower income levels. My solution for that is, if your income can't afford it then you need roommates.

(I'm not here to promote YNAB, I promise I'm just a happy user and not affiliated).

I use my AMEX for 90% of all spending. No issues importing transactions to YNAB. Sometimes there is a 1-2 delay, but they do import.

mattw2121··on The Golden Rule of Personal Finance
I'm a happy user of You Need a Budget. If the golden rule is "Spend less than you earn", the practical way to achieve that is "You Need a Budget".

I use YNAB because it works for me, but I've used paper and spreadsheets in the past. The key is having the budget so you can understand where your money is going. You aren't always going to stick to the budget, but by paying attention and classifying all expenses, you can better understand things going forward and then plan better.

I don't care if you make $35K a year or $350K a year, you need a budget.

mattw2121··on Just don’t
This is a lesson I am continually still trying to put in practice. I had the initial ah-ha moment from White Men Can't Jump.

See. if I'm thirsty. I don't want a glass of water, I want you to sympathize. I want you to say, "Gloria, I too know what it feels like to be thirsty. I too have had a dry mouth." I want you to connect with me through sharing and understanding the concept of dry mouthedness.

mattw2121··on Ask HN: What is your fav “I can't believe in 2022 this still doesn't work right”
I'm at the point that I am about to install a dedicated service that people in my house can just forward a document to via email and it will be printed. Then I have one place to troubleshoot instead of multiple PCs and phones.
mattw2121··on Ask HN: How to deal with burn out whilst in probationary period?
I'm sure this will be a wildly unpopular opinion, but welcome to life? The stories of people burning out and needing time off or sabbaticals seems so privileged. My dad was in sales for 60 years. Did he experience struggles in life (both work and home)? Sure, we all do. Did he ever throw in the towel and stop being productive? No, he grit his teeth and he worked through it.

There's always going to be times in your career that you are more or less productive. Some times everything is clicking and you feel like you're firing on all cylinders. Other times things suck and you just have to show up and do your best. I've been through that pattern so many times in my career, I can't even count.

Congrats on the success!
mattw2121··on The first rule of Microsoft Excel: Don’t tell anyone you’re good at it
I've found it a great return on time spent to show people some basic things (basic to you and me) in excel. It unlocks some of the magic and I've generally found that they continue to learn on their own. The end result is that you end up with more productive people around you and less questions asked.
mattw2121··on Ask HN: NDA for Interview
Either sign it and be considered for the role, or don't and don't?
mattw2121··on Tell HN: Beware 'Ungrowth' in Your Job
There was a half-hearted effort for everyone to go hybrid. After a few months everyone naturally fell back into the individual roles we had before the edict was issued. There was a lot of struggling before this silent return to original duties happened. No one really ever acknowledged the bad course we were on, just went back to the way things worked.

One developer actually found that he liked the business analyst work better and continued on that path.

mattw2121··on Tell HN: Beware 'Ungrowth' in Your Job
I had a situation once where we had a minor re-org and I ended up with a new manager. Literally day one, he made an attempt to change everyone's role. We were a team of developers and business analysts. He decided that everyone would become both and spend 50% of their time on each activity. Not sure why he thought this was a good idea, but he did.

After he announced it, I had a 1x1 with him and clearly let him know that he was the boss and I'd do my best to accomplish anything he assigned me. I also let him know that the business analyst duties didn't fit well with my skillset and that I would very likely struggle to produce output. We had a good, honest conversation about the situation and I ended up staying 100% as a developer. In the end he was happy and I was happy.

Why am I telling you? It's that I've learned it better to communicate and hopefully work things out then just pack up and head to another place.

mattw2121··on Ask HN: How to handle responsible disclosure when a company ignores you
1. See if you can connect with someone at LinkedIn.

2. Apply for and interview for a job opening and bring this up.

3. Look up their corporate records and see if there is an attorney on record that helped them file. Report to them.

mattw2121··on The dry-season malaria paradox, a bar to eradication, is solved
Do we want to eradicate mosquitoes? What happens to the fish, reptiles, and mammals that depend on them as a primary food source? I believe mosquitoes also play a role in some pollination. I get that malaria is bad for humans, but eradicating mosquitoes could be much worse in the long term, right?
mattw2121··on Ask HN: Where do you host images for your blog or landing pages?
I guess I'm behind the times, but I just store them on the file system where I am serving the website from.
mattw2121··on Alaska snow crab season canceled after disappearance of an estimated 1B crabs
King Salmon fishing was shut down in much of Alaska this season as well. I was there during the time and driving through the Kenai Peninsula was much different than previous years. Normally, you'll see people lined up on the river all over the place.
mattw2121··on How to really know another person
Yes, absolutely. I am in constant contact with people that are two ends of the spectrum. They either align malicious intent to every one else's actions or they are blissfully unaware of malicious intent at all. These are both examples of people thinking they know what someone else is thinking.
mattw2121··on All Twitter users in the US will start to see crowdsourced fact checks on tweets
I was recently invited to be a lead on Nextdoor (I know, I know) and accepted so that I could peek behind the curtain. Their process is that any flagged content is voted on by leads to Leave it, Possibly Remove, or Remove. What I've observed is that posts that completely break the rules still have a 50/50 split.

My point being that many people are not able to objectively look at something and make a decision. Their opinions and feelings will always get mixed in. Twitter, good luck with the crowdsourcing :).

mattw2121··on Need some advice as a highly skilled but a broke tech guy
Without further explanation, this seems like a "won't" problem, not a "can't" problem.
mattw2121··on Ask HN: Has Amazon completely broken down (at least in the Bay Area)?
On the opposite side of the country from you, but no issues to report. Get multiple Amazon deliveries each week and all are on time and delivered without issue.
mattw2121··on Need some advice as a highly skilled but a broke tech guy
Get a 9 to 5 job and you won't be broke any longer. Then you can work on side projects without the worry about being broke.
