mattsouth··on Show HN: Project Management as Code with Graphviz
Well, yes both are then blockers to the success of this approach. And on the other side of the coin, knocking up one of these dependency graphs is reasonably quick and straightforward. Its a thought provoking article - thanks.
mattsouth··on Show HN: Project Management as Code with Graphviz
How much do people use dependencies in jira etc? Seems that one ought to be able to create a plugin that would automatically generate and update this graph for any issue with dependencies.
mattsouth··on New York Subway X-Ray Area Maps
These are beautifully rendered. I'd love to be able to interact with them as you would in sketchup.
mattsouth··on Analyzing Cryptocurrencies Using PostgreSQL
Was BitcoinMarket.com the first marketplace? It struck me on reading that quote that I had no idea how to purchase bitcoin in 2010, and was more interested in finding out how to mine it.
mattsouth··on Hyundai Whistle-Blower, in Rarity for South Korea, Prompts Recall
My main point was that 2000 hrs sounds quite short, at least to me, but 100K miles sounds considerably longer. I suppose that if a manufacturer's goal is that all their vehicles last at least that long, and they can reach that goal then most will last much longer, especially with some TLC.
mattsouth··on Hyundai Whistle-Blower, in Rarity for South Korea, Prompts Recall
At an average speed of 50mph, 2000 running hours comes out at 100000 miles. If the spec aims for all engines to last this long then you'd expect a good majority of them to last a lot longer. This doesnt seem too bad a goal to me.
mattsouth··on Preinstalled Malware Targeting Mobile Users
"To protect themselves from regular and pre-installed malware, users should implement advanced security measures capable of identifying and blocking any abnormality in the device’s behavior.". Aside from reflashing the device before first use, and I suppose on a reasonably regular basis, are there any other suggestions for implementing this suggestion?
mattsouth··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
This is the sort of thing mysociety.org does pretty well in the uk
mattsouth··on Engineering is the bottleneck in deep learning research
Hey thanks - I hadnt seen those before. Good stuff.
mattsouth··on Engineering is the bottleneck in deep learning research
A lot of research depends on software written by researchers and yet writing software is not really supported or incentivised by academia. Organizations like the software sustainability institute in the UK (http://software.ac.uk) are lobbying to change this, with some success, but I guess it takes a long time to effect cultural change.
mattsouth··on Programming languages that are actively developed on GitHub
I dont think groovy should be on this list. It seems actively developed but is migrated to apache's archive and not apparently mirrored on github.
mattsouth··on Fitbit is reportedly buying Pebble for around $40M
I have experience of fitbit and pebble and of the two I much prefer pebble. But I guess success is not always about the quality of the product.
mattsouth··on A big blow for Meteor?
I love the whole stack approach and found it very productive. Meteor up from Arunoda was brilliant. But supporting small side projects has been too challenging over the last few version increments and a lot of the packages that were useful a year ago have not kept up.
mattsouth··on Gordon Murray-designed ‘OX’ flat-pack truck
Never mind watching it, that sounds like a treat of a weekend activity to me.
mattsouth··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
I'm a fan of Iain M. Banks and have gifted this one. It reminds me a lot of Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game.
mattsouth··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
I love this thread. One that hasnt been mentioned and that I've enthusiastically gifted is The Dispossessed by Ursula Le Guin.
mattsouth··on New finding may explain heat loss in fusion reactors
an average of $500 million a year for 60 years seems reasonable to me given the potential reward to society

mattsouth··on An open source 3D printable acoustic violin
Is it just that the head is smaller than a typical wooden violin (no scroll etc)?
mattsouth··on How to Make an SVG Lava Lamp
This is really nicely done. I love the lava lamp animation bit in addition it's accompanied by a good write up. Well done sir!
mattsouth··on Show HN: Sentinel.JS - The simplest alternative to angular.js
batmanjs does. Admittedly its a fairly niche framework but we use it a lot.
mattsouth··on Cicada 3301
I'd not come across this before. It's just like something out of a Neal Stephenson or William Gibson novel.
mattsouth··on Woman’s cancer killed by measles virus in trial
As I read it, in this case it's a specially modified version of measles that's used, not "vanilla" measles. Interestingly, the washington post write up also suggests that if the user had resistance to measles, another virus would have to be used.
mattsouth··on The Six Stages of Debugging (2012)
I had forgotten about this site and am pleased to get a reminder. Its the place I first saw the immortal quote:

A friend of mine in a compiler writing class produced a compiler with one error message “you lied to me when you told me this was a program”. —Pete Fenelon

mattsouth··on Is democracy overrated?
Perhaps it is a dry article, but I heard it on the radio this morning and really appreciated it (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b037vb15 - may be blocked outside uk). I was grateful to see the text version. Summary is that Roger Scruton believes that democracy needs an independent judiciary, property rights and the right to free speech and opinion in order to succeed.

mattsouth··on Understanding database normalisation: a very short tutorial
This is a good summary/introduction. Would it be improved with examples of insertion/deletion/modification anomalies using the context of your data example? This seems like a loose end to me at the moment.
mattsouth··on A calculator that only shows the answer after you give a suitable estimate
I think this is an excellent idea. Calculators were just being brought into the school curriculum when I was 8 years old (to some controversy at the time!) and we were told always to use the the three E's: estimate, evaluate, evaluate. The idea being that first you guess roughly what the answer should be and then after calculating it, you check it again to make sure you havent made a keying mistake. I've always thought this a lesson well taught that I've applied to many automation tasks since.
mattsouth··on Gamification of SEX
Agree that its a great campaign. Not sure they've created a movement. Really?

The PR they're generating does seem to rely on the analytics though, which is why I raised my sceptical eyebrow but as you point out, that's really not the goal.

mattsouth··on Gamification of SEX
Its a bold idea that has made some great PR but it strikes me that they have no way of knowing if their app is recording sex or some other activity.
mattsouth··on Spoilt for Choice - Springboard, UK based startup incubator
