mattnumbe··on Live Presidential Forecast
I also feel like that would be the case, but they usually call it after the polls have closed in that state.
mattnumbe··on Live Presidential Forecast
I feel that I'm an educated person, and I try to keep up with politics in America, but I really don't understand our system. How can some states be called with less than 20% of the votes being counted?
mattnumbe··on Google – My Activity
That's a real good point. It doesn't really matter if I'm male or female as long a they know what to sell me.
mattnumbe··on Google – My Activity
According to this, google doesn't know if Im male or female. It must not be showing what they really know about me.
mattnumbe··on Whatever happened to Japanese laptops?
I dont know why the data looks that wonky, but the graph that business insider uses (taken from Kantar) shows a similar pattern. http://www.businessinsider.my/apple-v-android-market-share-b...
mattnumbe··on Whatever happened to Japanese laptops?

mattnumbe··on Doing Business in Japan (2014)
I agree about the rush hour on the trains in the cities. I also live in a large city in Japan and have to battle to get on the train around 8am and 6:30pm. The guys that are working all the over time tend to work in the really big name companies (Toyota, Honda, Mitsui, etc.) which have their main working centers outside of the big cities. We have a lot of engineers who work at these locations and it seems that the minimum amount of paid overtime is 40hr/month for our employees (I have interviewed engineers here who have reported working 110hr+ of overtime in a month, which is illegal here). The problem is, these are all reported paid overtime hours for contract employees. Patrick is talking about lifetime employees of the large firms, who do a lot of service overtime, which is unreported and un-paid. When I was an English teacher I was often hired by these firms to do 6 month intensive courses for employees who were moving to an English speaking country for 3-5 years. These guys had an unbelievable amount of work for that six months and often slept at the office (which has showers and changing rooms) for their 3 or 4 hours of downtime.

So I think you're right, that not everyone is doing this, but there is a certain circle where it is highly expected.

mattnumbe··on The Story of How McDonald’s First Got Its Start
According to the Wikipedia article on Kroc, soon enough you won't have to read his story because Michael Keaton will be playing him in the movie The Founder coming out in December. Really interesting guy though. I had no idea about all the positive things he did while he was in control of McDonald's
mattnumbe··on Google shuts down Google.com/movies
Same here. I feel like a lot of Google's products aren't well advertised, and canceled without warning. They also tend to be better than most alternatives.
mattnumbe··on Chinese Yuan Becomes Official Currency in Zimbabwe
If you look at the links to the other "top articles" on this site, none of them are really news either. Example:"How America Created ‘HIV/AIDS’ to kill Black People"
mattnumbe··on What Sid Meier’s Video Game Empire Got Right and Wrong About ‘Civilization’
I feel at a constant state of almost war from the first time I meet any civilization in the game. I both fear and look forward to the war actually starting.
mattnumbe··on Move over, solar: The next big renewable energy source could be at our feet
I don't understand why news about the alternative energy industry always makes it sound like we will eventually move to one energy source. Using a combined approach is the most obvious and probable outcome.

Even if it's just single replies, like a smiley or an lol, it still seems like a lot.

"Since we sent roughly 80,000 messages to each other in an 8 month time span"

Over 330 messages per day? Is this not absurd to anyone else? Am I not sending enough facebook messages to my loved ones?

mattnumbe··on Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
I didn't get into the series until 5, but I'm really glad I did. The AI wasn't so good, but the mods that were built for it are fantastic and solve so many issues with the game. Even only exploring the map and fighting off raging barbarians can be fun. Anyone have any favorite MODs? I've been playing the community mod for a while. It's incredible the amount of work fans put into that game. I want to thank them all for making rainy days a lot more enjoyable. A bottle of wine and a friend makes for a great Civ V experience.
mattnumbe··on Ask HN: Why is it cheaper to buy a new laser printer than replace the cartridge?
My comment can be read two ways: It's too bad sustainability has nothing to do with legality, in the sense that it should be illegal to make products that are extremely wasteful.

mattnumbe··on Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies?
I think this may be the first list ever to contain Santa Sangre and Jurassic Park. Well done.
mattnumbe··on Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies?
I thought the same when I watched it the first time, but you should read some analysis' of that film and watch it again. It's surprisingly deep.
mattnumbe··on Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies?
Solid list. Im not a big anime fan but I also enjoyed Akira. Have you seen Paprika? Another great Sci-fi anime (on a short list for me), which Inception may have stolen ideas from (don't quote me on that).
mattnumbe··on Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies?
Time Crimes and The Jacket are the only two movies in this thread I haven't seen. Thanks!
mattnumbe··on Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies?
I watched a video essay on youtube the other day that presents the argument that Mr. Smith is the One and not Neo. It was quite convincing.
mattnumbe··on Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies?
The Thing (1982), Slither, Dark Skies, Intacto (spanish), Another Earth, Coherence

Primer is on here a bunch, but really worth watching if you like time travel conundrums.

I thought I was the only person that liked Pandorum. Everyone I suggested it to hated it.

mattnumbe··on A Netflix for Film Geeks?
I live in Japan and half of the Netflix content is inaccessible because for some reason they don't have English subtitles for Japanese movies. Does anyone know if this has to do with licencing? Does it cost Netflix more to add subtitles?
